Hi all.
browsed for similar topic within lowyat, but nothing.
I am wondering if there are services that provide Intake (and Exhaust) valve cleaning here?
Particularly blasting it with soft and fine walnut shell to clean the caked-carbon deposited at the valves and area surrounding and vacuuming the debris out...then repeat it on other valves.Just need to open teh intake manifold.
BMW's DI Engine particularly in the 335i and 135i are prone to this issue, and this method is being used by BMW in NA and some EU to physically cleans the gunk out. hmm.gif
Same can be applied to other DI engines as well.

Port and Polish ...maybe polish may help, but would require alot of work.
Any info is much appreciated.
some pics attached.

Hi bro,

Glad you asked. I don't really get it. It's either you blast the valves with the engine head on or off the car. It's basically sandblasting already as we use walnut shells for blasting car bodies during restoration too during the days you met me at the workshop.

Blasting the valves with the head on the car seems dangerous if you ask me. BEcause; if the shells are strong enough to get carbon off the intake valves, it may or may not do some damage on the aluminium head/cylinder bores as well. How strong can a vacuum be? Can they guarantee that all remaining shells come out?

Port n Polish, a very much discussed topic already. You need the whole head off the car. Best to port and polish, and flow tested with a flow bench to ensure all four(or six) ports are equal size/flow. If you port senget, later power also senget lol.

There's also a high debate on having to leave a rough finishing on the intake side of the port to ensure that air/fuel mixes properly.

Hi Elton! Thanks for the feedback.
Yup,i remember those days..you guys was sandblasting a car, but could only remember a Porsche or Porsche-powered Audi there as well.
Yup, blasting those intakes have their cons.
It does sound scary, considering aluminum block and valves.what more if the engine block were micro-finished.
vacuum would suck the gunk, debris and shells away. i suppose if there are some left, it would just get burned during combustion and exhaust.

anyhow, what can be done here...i dont mind doing PnP but collateral damage (financially and engine assembly) worries me.

A friend of mine had his JCW blasted with walnut shell 2 mths ago and the power, responsiveness as well as FC back to like new car. Most DI engines suffer from poor performances due to carbon build up on the valve even with PCV bypass or with oil catch can. It is somehow or rather become a schedule maintenance for them every 15-20k miles. He is located in US and I am looking for these type of services as well here...smile.gif

Hi all,

I know this thread is old, but anyone found out where we can get walnut blasting done in Malaysia?

no luck so far. i guess overhauling is an option.
for DI engines, make sure to have Oil catch can/tank at the PCv, do something with the EGR.from time to time, clean the intake manifold and blast some carb cleaner into the intake valve itself. the valves are caked no doubt, but that's the least we can do.

Look for Car Pro Auto Service in Facebook. They do walnut sandblasting for GDi engines.
