I got S3. as for the other stuff i mentioned, they aren't even released yet  cry.gif

the only thing that would make 2013 stuff even better is if they added wigig. Because already there are some wigig routers available already in 2012, but no wigig smartphones just yet  hmm.gif  that would make streaming 1080p content from pc or NAS to android phone that much cleaner without stutters  nod.gif

also that said i keep to a firm 5 year upgrade cycle. not rich enough to upgrade too often. But i think S3 was worth the purchase because it really was a jack of all trades and made smartphone that more practical.

but i do think that 2013 would have been a even better in terms of features, and more future proofed compared to in 2012. but i don't want to wait that long  sweat.gif

For example, with the upcoming spec features i mentioned coming in 2013, the ability of the android smartphone to stream via wireless 1080p content would be even more smoother. Not to mention games would be way better looking as well.

5 year upgrade cycle.

Nowadays you're lucky if you can hold on to the same device for more than 2 years. 2 years is the absolute limit of obsolescence IMHO.

But, like you said, we all have financial constraints. It helps that I gave up upgrading my computer lol - I'm still rocking a 5 year old Dell M1210 as my primary + a free netbook I picked up somewhere.

It's sad, I know. But I RARELY need a computer to do stuff anymore. Except maybe writing (in which case the Netbook is more than enough).

I mean, my PHONE has more cores than my computer(s) lol.

And, yes, the new Exynos is pure sex.

It depends on how you handle the task manager.
As for me, i use task manager to only kill certain apps.
i will put all core service/process as ignored when clearing memory.
and i leave it to kill task when screen off.
if i suddenly feel my phone is lag, just press power button twice. icon_idea.gif
*
Interesting idea. Maybe I should set Tasker to kill all apps when I press the home button 3 times or something.

Make Swap oni. For all intents and purposes, I have 2.5GB memory right now lol...

... though 1.5GB of that is slower than a slug taking Ritalin.

At least my music player doesn't die on me while surfing really really heavy sites now.

Class 10 yo. Class 10  brows.gif  brows.gif

I'm running class 10 (supposedly), feels more like a class 8 to me.

And wait until you overmax the swap with multiple image/animation heavy websites.

It gets ugly. Really.

Ever seen the S3 crawl to a halt?

Admittedly, that's intentional so it doesn't count as "real world usage" lol. Normal usage wise I'm still quite happy - if it's even the swap's fault. It might be Siyah lol.

Ah the joy of flashing all sorts of weird homebrewed stuff into 2k's worth of electronics.

it is not only the binary counter. but i guess samsung doesnt care about that as i got my phone repaired anyways
*
If you worry about this so much you can always flash back stock everything.

there was a reason why samsung released the source code and unlocked the bootloader for us. unlike HTC
*
Yes. So that we can make our devices explode and thus force ourselves to get a new Samsung smartphone to replace it.

Samsung is very sly indeed.

brows.gif

TBH, I'm forever thankful we don't have any of that ass off business messing up with our constant flashing.

y don't want go for silicrylic?
*
I have great animosity towards silicone of any type. TPU I like.

Initial impressions:

1) Faxion is fatter (thicker, harder TPU), NeoHyb is thinner.
2) Faxion is better built, NeoHybrid is rougher around the edges. No button issues with the Faxion, altough the bottom mic hole is not 100% properly aligned.
3) Faxion has less lip around the screen. But the lip is smooth not rough like the NeoHyb.
4) Faxion offers much less grip compared to the NeoHybrid (especially my modded one). Even the TPU area is smooth.

Okay guys, I finally got the Faxion, so it's time for a quick shoot out between the Hybrids (plus one 3D0 case for good measure).

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

This is gonna be just a simple comparo, but I hope it helps you guys.

Incipio Faxion

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Pros:
- Top notch build quality and finishing.
- Buttons work well (if not a tad hard to press).
- Good all round protection.
- Lip around screen is raised the highest amongst the three.
- Single piece.
- Feels durable.
- MicroUSB cutout is large enough to accommodate every connector I have (including my extra fat OTG cable).
- Comes with free clear SP.
- Easy to remove and put back on.
- Available in Black.

Cons:
- A tad on the expensive side (MSRP on the Incipio website. Got it for a good price from ShopAndroid so no issues here).
- Back is glossy and slippery (nothing a razor blade and a few minutes of scoring and slicing can't handle though).
- It's slightly thicker than the Neo Hybrid on the back, but the Impact Mesh is fatter around the sides.
- Bottom mic hole is not perfectly aligned.

SGP Neo Hybrid

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Pros:
- Cheaper vs the Faxion (MSRP from Spigen).
- TPU back provides better grip.
- Slimmest case out of the three.
- Ample amount of raised lip around screen (second to the Faxion though).
- Eye catching design.
- MicroUSB cutout large enough to fit most accessories (my fat OTG cable was a very tight fit though).
- Perfect cutouts for mics (top and bottom).
- Available in multiple colour choices.
- Comes with free clear SP.

Cons:
- The famous "oversensitive buttons" issue (moddable, but even then still works weird sometimes).
- Rough TPU finishing all around the lip.
- Fragile feeling, smooth (no grip) polycarb frame.
- Not available in Black, not even the TPU part (Seriously, Spigen?).

Tech 21 Impact Mesh

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Pros:
- Has a 3D0 band built into the side.
- Best button design out of the three.
- Good finishing (no rough edges anyway).
- Perfect cutouts for mics and microUSB.
- SHOULD provide good side impact resistance.

Cons:
- Expensive. Really. 3D0 gel MUST cost a bomb.
- Almost ZERO lip around the screen.
- Misleading name. Was expecting the back to have a hole mesh design or something. No such thing.
- Back is really smooth and provides ZERO grip.
- Case is really FAT around the sides.

So, my personal favourite right now? The Faxion, personally modded to fit my grippy needs (thanks to a handy razor blade). The Neo Hybrid is a close second.

The Mesh? Let's just say I hope somebody likes 3D0, transparent TPU and the colour Orange enough to take it off my hands.

http://netkups.com/?d=25a332360500c

is it good? or should I just stick with the original stock kernal?
*
Um, the Wanam Stockmod kernel gets flashed automatically every time you flash any version of Wanamlite.

http://wanamlite.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=3710

so should I flash the kernal as well? or just flash this is enough?

GT-I9300_WanamLite.XXBLG9.V2.1.NO-WIPE.zip

many thanks
*
Just the ROM is enough IINM. But it doesn't hurt to download and keep the kernel too, in case you go testing other kernels and decide to go back.

It IS GL V2 after all. Though 1 tiny pure silica sand particle is all it really takes to screw it all up.

I'll stick with my SPs after all.

not sure about Avast's anti theft but check out some videos on Cerberus. another thing is that for rooted devices, u can install it using CWM and it will be an built in app. a full wipe cant destroy it. it has a disguised name too  thumbup.gif
*
Flashing a new ROM destroys EVERYTHING.

Sadly we can't lock CWM recovery/download mode with a password. THAT would be bawse.

But amongst the tracking/anti theft apps I've used, Cerebrus is the undisputed champ. Samsung Dive (or anything else for that matter) pales in comparison.

As for anti viruses, lol. Yes, malware IS an issue on Android, but eff, YOU ARE PRESENTED WITH A PERMISSIONS LIST WHEN INSTALLING STUFF, CHECK IT.

I DO agree it helps for people who can't be bothered to check though - though myself I can do without the extra resource drain. Plus, got funny business happening to your phone? Nandroid restore lar. This is why taking 10 minutes a WEEK to backup helps.

Supernexus Build 2, at time of writing this, is being uploaded. Anyone wanna try this? Looks good, just maybe I'd prefer some of the Samsung features to be in it. Any way to inject those features in the .zip?
*
If it's ASOP/AOKP, no way. The underlaying Sammy framework is simply not there. Unless they've managed to hybrid ROMs.

Similarly I'm tempted to try making a new "proper" microSIM from Celcom. Mine's simply cut, like everyone else. I know it (seems to) work fine but sometimes I wonder if that's the best way to do things.

Psst. It's still JB Dom-able as per usual, thankfully. Plus GX moved to VillainTheme so it's largely version-independent now, which means Wanam V2.2 is Day-One-Themable.

Ah, smooth ROM upgrades FTW.

Hey guys small problem, don't know if it has been asked before but i did a search on this thread no avail.

I'm pretty happy with my S3 so far and been vouching it to this friend who wanted to get a phone . He finally got one yesterday and then LOL he can connect to his mobile data, outside wifi but not his house.

It shoes connected to wifi but simply refuses to load a webpage, all other devices can surf without a problem. Anyone of you came to know of this issue?

Now he's pissed and complaining how crappy android is HAHAA
*
Android too advanced for his home wifi lol?

Anyway, ask him to change his wifi router channel from "auto" to any number between 1-11. Some work better than others.

Failing that, he might need to update his phone to the latest firmware/ROM, try "software update".

Also, don't forget Dark_Angel's tips.
