You could get Merida carbon bike for ~5k for 2012 model and below I think. Go carbon dude. Save your money from frame upgrading in the future..

The only alloy bike that is worth looking for is from specialized..I read that somewhere in bike magazine reviews..

hard sell merida nih... they give you commission is it?? ahaha.

Haha. No commission for sure. But I'm recommending based on my own experience as someone who started cycling very recently.

No doubt carbon is preferable and for usual beginners's budget, I think only Merida brand is available. Well to each his own smile.gif

Plus, the after sales service with the lbs is very good. That is one thing you have to look for as well.

IMO..get a good frame first. components can be upgraded later..

No point you are having a top of the range dura ace or SRAM but your frame is the super flexy XDS for example.

105 is good enough for a start. Tiagra and sora is not really recommended though if you do want to enjoy your beginnin of cycling hobby.

tiagra 10s is ok lar, at least forcibly ok..still got some exit roads to maneuver..

first thing first... we are not against brands like xds, exitway and the likes of it... (well, actually... come to think of it.. maybe we are quite against it)... but, the main reason why we don't like this brands are that they offer bikes that are too cheap for you to trust them...

it might look like an excellent deal for a buyer from an exterior point of view especially one if you have not come into contact with cycling before and you are pressed for money...let's not argue about the quality of their frame and things of that sort.. some of the parts on those bikes are questionable if they even can last longer than 2 years if not 1... if the parts starts kaput-ing midway into ownership, that means you are piling on repair costs which is gonna end up in a bad way...

some of the very evident choices of exitway in cutting costs to sell their bikes cheap and make it look very worth it, lower quality cranksets and BB (prowheel in most cases of bikes that costs less than RM1.3k or the 3 figure bikes)... and some very funky paired spoke like wheels... the choice of other lower componentry like handlebars, saddle, seat post will not hurt much until you start to get itchy handed... and after spending x amount of money... you realize you end up with a very costly bike with no identity  blink.gif

so, to clarify a bit.. we are not just about branding here...

I'm not questioning on brands, I guess I should not quote XDS in the first place (saying cheap bikes will do).

But do you agree with my point that having a good frame first is more important than componentry? A good lower end Scott and the likes with a mix of cheap components is much better than a complete set of bike with cheap frame and cheap components.

A lower end carbon frame for a specific entry model is better if not equivalent to the top level of an alloy bike..is that correct?

And there are plenty of examples for that. I know Polygon and Merida has their cheap carbon bikes but are very well made in term of its technology stuffs. Again it's not about brands as you say but we can't escape from reality where brand name will always be associated with certain bikes, be it cheap or expensive tongue.gif

Specialized entry level alloy bike will of course be very much a better options compare to an entry level alloy bike from Exitway..it goes on and on.

You are absolutely Correct! hence I'm not saying ALL brands comparison, I mentioned spesific brands smile.gif

In my reply above I would say my range of brands cater for the budget entry level, Exitway, XDS, polygon, Merida, and such.

Anyone here climbed Fraser Hill alone to and fro? Just wanna share my experience..the climb on the 1 way route up to Fraser was so far the most extreme I've tried. Well I've tried Genting before but that was a very short one (from Goh Tong to Awana). It's a mind battle throughout the 8km uphill, I think the gradient is kinda like when you go from RNR Sempah towards HOA (the short climb at the RNR there), only that it was a solid 8km. My 32T is well utilized anyway and my heart rate was in a comfortable range thanks to the cassette.

The descend route however is very very technical compared to Sempah, and consists of a couple of short climbs, rough pavements and slippery at certain places thanks to a landslide debris. I couldn't help but to smile and sped down real fast..among other thing is because I'm afraid as I'm the only one descending with no other people around.

One lesson learnt I've had is not to descend it alone, and don't ever tried to push hard when you are a first timer on any route you unfamiliar with. I Nearly end up in a very deep gutter when I overshoot a sweeping left corner (For those familiar, it's the left hand corner after a steep climb just before the end of the descend at the T junction)

My rear tire skidded towards the right and front tires to the right side while my body is going left, kinda like drifting) and I'm an inch away from getting into the gutter...Huhu..

So I spent the 30km descend to KKB with a very slow ride...recovering from a what could be a near death accident...pheww

But I'll conquer tHat hill again one day! It was my last ride here, will be migrating oversea very soon...1000km on my months old Merida..it has made me a better and fitter person..brought me to so many places.....it will be my training bike.

SL4 here i comeeee tongue.gif

Owh and you should try the 8km climb from Gap to clock tower. It is steep. Like really steep. Making me wonder are those top 5 in Strava leader board really riding a bike and not a motorbike. So fast and strong. Like Babi hutan... tongue.gif

*my experience I told above is for the 8km gap-top of Fraser...the KKB-gap is similar like Sempah..but with more distances
