Yes, getting a better or should I said, the right car, which fits your job and personal life also matters. Maybe he just spoke it right out of the blues, but in reality, it met his personal needs.
Just like my company (not mine, my employer), we are underpaid and compensated with company cars for use. If you asked me, I would rather had my salary increment inline with the market and I choose whether I need a car badly or something else. Really sucks because at the end of the day, cars still belongs to the company and if you wanna move on, had to prepare a car first.
