1) wiper made of plastic.. maybe people lifted up because want to give some wind? 
2) can connect android using usb.. aux cable also can..

but if not lift up, rubber not last long

i also see some people really creative. take dropped small tree branches then place it between rubber wiper and windscreen. so rubber will not touch windscreen
