MISSLEADING, Simcity 4 is NOT the new simcity.

Simcity 4 can offline.
and it is the top city building game with massive mod, I will vote SC4. obvious winner. Created by OLD EA truely best.

Considering i spent 60AUD for the original, i never regret getting the game at all. It is amazing, IMO and each expansion makes it even better.

Considering how much I have 'ahem' on my Medieval2/Rome - I am thinking of getting the pack now to compensate for it. Problem is, it is very likely that I won't be playing it at all (bought at least 3 new grand-strategy games and still haven't complete my Rise of Samurai too).

Hmm - any comments? Buy for collection or skip this, and buy others for gaming only?

*On Stardock games, damn, Dread Lords are still pricey for such an old game.
*
Well, there are a couple of games that i actually bought it on steam to redeem my sins for pirating it. Namely Flatout 2 because i played the game a lot when i was 14.

If you have the money, you could buy those games.

QUOTE(phantasm0110 @ Jul 19 2012, 10:09 AM)
sins of solar empire trinity a good buy?
never played this kind of games before, will it be hard to handle?
played RTS such as star craft 2.
*
Yea, it plays more like Supreme Commander in space than other strategy games. It is paced very well, in a way that the game will never overwhelm you with too many things to do.

I actually have 4 games to consider now. Either Sim City 4, Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl or Call of Pripyat and Thief 3.

I like city building and Sim City 4 with mods might offer me what i am looking for.

Stalker, i think i got on the wrong start with the series because i started with Clear Sky. So, might try to get one of the other game but im not sure which game.

Thief 3, i want to try the infamous Cradle mission where it was said to be one of the scariest level ever

sim city 4 and sins of a solar empire are greenlighted

good games

if you dont mind spending more, i think Rebellion, the standalone game for Sins of Solar empire offer a much better value than Trinity. The reason being Rebellion offers a lot more content than Trinity.

However, if this is the first time you try the series, Trinity would be a good option too since its cheap but you are missing out quite a lot of cool stuff that Rebellion brings.

Pity that I will be skipping Rebellion; still too expensive for me (USD30) - wanna save money in case something else pops up.

@s7ranger; yeah - Bastion flash deal gone.
*
Well, you can try Trinity to see whether this game suits you or not. smile.gif

QUOTE(jagged @ Jul 19 2012, 11:32 AM)
have you played rebellion yet, is it good?
*
Yea, played about 60 hours and i do enjoy it.

The simplest way to put it would be Sup Com in space, but it is an understatement.

QUOTE(Hornet @ Jul 19 2012, 12:13 PM)
Many Stalker fans is saying SoC is the best. Just keep in mind the game is quite old, so the graphics is more dated. If you don't mind, its a great game, most probably the best one.

Call of Pripyat is more newer, so the graphics is up to date, maps are bigger too, and its also generally a great game.
*
Thanks, i think i might pick up Call of Pripyat then.

Guys, anyone even play sins of the solar empire?
What's your take on it?
Good or horrible?

I have played the game over 100 hours, yea, it is a good game in a sense that it plays a lot like Supreme Commander in space where you build an empire that spans over dozens of planets and command really huge fleets. You get heroes too, that is very similar to heroes in Warcraft 3 which they level up, gain new skills and become more powerful. There is also a huge tech tree that is a feature in most 4X games featured in Sins of Solar Empire.

What i think about today's Sins deal would be, if you do not mind spending more money, get Rebellion because it is the most recent release of the series and this series adds a lot to the game, from Titan (similar to heroes in WC3, but bigger and more powerful), Corvettes (a medium sized strike craft to harass ships) and a handful of new researches that changed how each race plays. The 3 original races have been separated to Rebels and Loyalist that offer different play style. In Rebellion, you can consume entire planets to a dead asteroids for resources or ally with pirates to do your dirty work. On top of that, you get engine upgrades that make the engine look even better than Trinity, especially the shadows in Rebellion which enforce the sense of scale. For example, when a Titan cruising above a couple of smaller frigates, the Titan's shadow will cover the ships below in its own shadow. The developers also revamp some of the textures in the game to make the game look better.

If not, you can get Trinity, which doesnt have all the additions in Rebellion, i think this is a nice starting point to the series since it is very cheap now. You'll still get the first 2 expansion's content that adds more defensive structure and more options for diplomacy. If you like playing Trinity after this sale, i highly recommend you to get Rebellion on the next sale.

tldr version: Trinity if you dont have much budget, Rebellion if you dont mind spending more.

Okay, to make easier for you to consider, i will list out the pros and cons of the games:

Pros:
- Solid combat with light and darkness, where you have to use light to wear out the darkness's "shield" to kill them.
- Beautiful graphics, especially the lighting effects that is still amazing to look at till now. Even though it is a 2010 game.
- Good PC port, with a proper graphics configuration with FoV slider.
- Very atmospheric environment design that draws you into the game
- Decent voice acting and good sound design
- Comes with 2 DLCs, The Signal and The Writer that offers uniquel design. It offers a different experience. 360 players have to pay for it

Cons:
- Certain parts of the game can be annoying, where you die a lot due to cheap deaths. This is quite frequent in The Signal, but other parts of the game are not too bad.
- Some of the boss fights are annoying, however, there arent many boss fights in the game, though.
- Lackluster ending
- Other than it's amazing lighting effects, the textures in the game are a little bit too low res for my liking
- The level designs are linear, but not your average corridor shooter. There are optional paths to explore through out the game.

I think this is my short review. It is up to you on deciding getting the game or not.
