Sneak peak from @TMCorp

http://www.digitalnewsasia.com/enterprise-...-bandwidth-hogs

UniFi VIP data caps are coming soon walauweihhhhhhhhhhhh
*
The bandwidth hog thing is just rubbish IMHO.It is just the matter of managing the peak and non-peak hours to provide optimal internet experience to the consumers.

Usage caps are just ways for ISPs to make more money.

If TM will ever offer gigabit internet without caps at an affordable price...

I wonder if that day will ever come...

i hope the cap speed will b reasonable...i cannot accept cap speed below 1mbps laugh.gif doh.gif

I'm not a fan of hard caps. But if it really comes to it then capping at peak hours is more of a better solution to satisfy everyone.

On the other hand, if other countries are moving away from internet capping, why should we go backwards with our internet?Overseas bandwidth really that expensive that it needs to be done?I only see TM making tons of profits every year without any caps...

advantage and disadvantage implement quota..hmm..

IMHO we consumers got everything to lose.Advantage of 'helping' TM save bandwidth costs or implementing caps somehow will make our internet 'faster' or even cheaper internet?

I just can't see or feel the benefits sad.gif

friend, telco everywhere in the world is moving towards CAPPING of bandwidth.

Quota is the way forward, not backward.
*
As far as i know the most prominent countries doing that is US and Canada.Do know that people there are very much against it but the telcos are just too powerful and just not budging.

Other than that, for wired internet, i sure don't see a trend going towards capping.Even Australia and New Zealand are trying to move away from caps(they do have pretty expensive internet) so why can't we do the same?

Well i'm not gonna keep arguing about it anymore as probably nothing will change anyway.

Looks like this time budget didn't say anything about broadband and stuff.

Wired internet was never meant to be compared with mobile broadband.

ISPs buy bulk BANDWIDTH not bulk volume.
Administrators monitor bandwidth congestion traffic on networks all day long to see it it gets congested over different times of the day and if need arises, they add bandwidth capacity to accommodate the surge NEVER by volume quota.

The only people that are supporting the buffet style ideology today are the evil Bell companies such as Verizon, AT&T and their babies.

With the trend of where internet is heading... cloud computing, OTT IPTV, online game content hosting(obsoleting physical media storage such as blue ray/DVDs), it's impractical to implement quota based internet in time to come.

OTT services such as Hulu, Netflix, Google TV, Apple TV etc. just makes the volume quota idea unfeasible to be implemented and probbaly isps will have to do away with it eventually maybe after they make enough of money to cover initial costs and satisfy themselves.

It is said that the walled garden based iptv servcies such as Hypp TV and ASTRO IPTV will be overtaken by the OTT market beyond 2013. Other than that the upcoming next generation consoles such as the PS4 and Xbox 720 will make it compulsory for unlimited high bandwidth internet to play games. Games will not be transferable and tied to online accounts for combating piracy. Each time you start a game, you need to connect back to servers for authentication but also games data will not be fitted entirely on physical media. Meaning part of the levels or content require additional download as the game progresses. So you know current blue ray discs fit gigabytes of content. Downloading legitimate content will also be in large amount.

Reasons that I can think of why some companies still promote :

1) Anti competition for their walled services with priority QoS.Services such as IPTV, local cloud storage and telephony that require guaranteed bandwidth to function properly.
2) They want more money and profit by squeezing more subscribers with current resources minus the need to upgrade.
3) Avoid maintenance and improvements
4) Shoddy cost saving approach

Totally agree. If things are done right,Internet can be as cheap as possbile for consumers while telcos can still make decent or more profits.

We are moving towards a future where bandwidth consumption will continue to grow and so do our knowledge based economy.Putting caps will not benefits us except maybe the telcos making more profits smile.gif

The isp environment had changed dramatically since then. Now there's quite a few competitors either from wired or wireless isps.Let's hope TM feel the heat and upgrade our packages to compete accordingly smile.gif
