code here » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « ok text here QUOTE I have played Diablo III for dozens of hours. I have beaten the normal difficulty level with one of my “Heroes,” and I have made solid progress with a variety of characters representing each class. I came to the new sequel already a fan. I played through and beat Diablo II perhaps a dozen times, at nearly every difficulty level with every type of character. But now I’m done. I’m moving on. It finally hit me: Diablo III is the worst game I’ve ever played, for hours and hours and hours. This post has been edited by Deimos Tel`Arin: Jul 11 2012, 01:58 PMThere is a moment playing Diablo games when it hits you. Why am I still playing? It’s a tough question to wrestle with, since this is the same question that could ruin all video games for you. What’s the point? So, I started to think about my favorite games. Some games have a great story line. You can make different choices each time, and affect the outcome, subtly or drastically. Some games are interspersed with amazing set pieces so massive in scale that you cannot wait to reach them. Some games offer challenging puzzles, with multiple ways to solve them, so you can constantly replay to try each permutation. Most of all, though, the best games are simply fun to play. Video games run with the idea that “half the fun is getting there.” In the best games, that’s almost all of the fun. There are very few games that I replay continually just to see the ending. The actual gameplay has to be very fun. In fact, the gameplay has to be just as fun when you lose as when you win. I have a maxim of gaming that you should never expect to complete a gaming task once. Even the most difficult feat in gaming will often be repeated. So, it must be fun. Losing has to be almost as enjoyable as winning. Diablo is simply no fun. The gameplay is beyond repetitive. It’s inane. It’s completely lifeless. It is mouse clicking with a few keyboard shortcuts thrown in. The entire game boils down to: look at that monster, I’m going to click on it until it’s dead. There is very little skill, or even thought involved in playing the game. There are no puzzles to solve, no riddles, no mysteries. There is a plot, but it is almost entirely revealed in high-quality cut scene movies between the action. Almost nothing you do in the game feels like it is contributing to the storyline. It used to be that Diablo was about collecting cool weapons and leveling-up your character. You play more and you gain more awesome toys and cool abilities. To a small extent that is still true. But Blizzard has made serious mistakes in the game design and, at the risk of sounding cynical, it seems that much of the problem comes from the new auction house. Users can now buy and sell items in the game with real money. Blizzard takes a huge cut, of course, but you’re still making money from playing the game. "Blizzard has strewn its virtual world with tons of virtual garbage" However, look where this has left the game experience. Items are now worth money, which means that Blizzard needs to create an entire level of items that is at once nearly-unobtainable and also very valuable. This pushes down the value of almost all other items in the game. Any item that is not ‘magical,’ which is to say the overwhelming bulk of the items you find, is completely worthless to the player. These items do not add to the gameplay at all, and you can’t sell them. Blizzard has strewn its virtual world with tons of virtual garbage. Characters gain new abilities as they gain experience, but often these seem like a step backwards. I get new powers that add or augment my existing abilities, but these are often less interesting, or less powerful, than the powers I already had. The special effects look cool, but the action on screen can be jumbled and confusing at times. So, no matter how cool it looks, you are essentially just clicking on a massive pile of bad guys, and repeating this simple act until they all stop moving. So, Diablo III has some very fundamental flaws, but it is the little things that bother me even more. Some of these are endemic to the hack-and-slash dungeon crawler genre, but the genre, and gaming in general, has grown up significantly in the 11 years since Diablo II was released. While competitors are creating deep virtual worlds and immersive environments, Blizzard has taken the laziest route possible with Diablo III. Here are some of my favorite examples. In the game, you might have to kill a swarm of bugs. That swarm acts like one single enemy, but looks like a swarm. So, you just click your mouse on it, and your character starts shooting at flies with a crossbow. Some of these flies are so scary your character will run away from them, even though they look like all the other flies, and you wouldn’t know they strike such fear in the hearts of men unless you read the description, which says simply “nightmarish.” Okay, fine, your character kills these nightmarish flies and is rewarded with . . . a suit of armor? What?! Seriously, I’m supposed to believe that this swarm of flies was carrying a suit of armor? What the heck were flies doing with armor? And 80 gold coins? Where did they keep them? I suppose flies in Diablo III have pockets. There are a few non-player characters, and you are forced to listen to the same repetitive dialogue from them over and over again. It has nothing to do with the plot or the action on screen. You could be fighting a nest of giant spiders, and the Enchantress character will ask if you think one of the boy characters likes her. You could be literally descending into the depths of Hell, and the Scoundrel character might talk about the women he’s taken advantage of. It’s boring and nonsensical, and worst of all, it’s repetitive. Each character has maybe a dozen lines or so that they spew at the weirdest moments, but over the course of a 20 – 30 hour game, you’ll hear these lines over and over again. And you can’t kill these characters. Trust me, I’ve tried. Diablo III is simply an example of the laziest form of game design. It is as though Blizzard tried to imagine the least effort they could put into improving Diablo II while still calling this a new game, and then cut out half of those ideas. Blizzard has created a world that will make you feel worthless for revisiting. Why am I still playing? I’m not. I’m done. |

I agree with the article as in certain aspects of the game, D3 is done is a terrible way that i cannot imagine before the game release. Terrible writing, forced cutscenes that look terrible (especially the scene that Magda killed Cain), the lines that characters said are just generic and absolutely terrible.
Adding on that, the level design isnt randomised as much as i hope which made the game feel like it has barely any content. Sure, the levels are beautiful, but looking at the same level at the 15th time would probably be boring. And i agree with adding Auction House is a bad idea. ARPG is built on the idea of collecting loot, but the Auction House remove the purpose of collecting loot. And also, due to the Auction House, loot drops are much lower now, to encourage people to use Auction House. It is not a well thought out design to begin with, unless they just want to make money by not doing anything. The monsters bit, i also do agree on, as Elites are just a recycle of whatever that is in the game but with some nonsensical affixes added to it. Slows down the game's pacing if you are undergeared and most of the time, i dont find it fun fighting them because they encourage excessive amount of kiting. The bit with flies dropping armor, seriously, its just a game. It doesnt have to be 100% realistic. However, the gameplay still holds the game together well, despite of all these flaws. If they made it worse, i think, thats a piece of garbage there. |

Again, I need to pipe out my 2sen. The article has got D3's fundamental flaw correct. Its not the end but the journey thats important. Thats why hardcore saved D3 for me.
If I were to play on softcore, I would have given up a long time ago. Oh also, if you are one of those who bash D3 along with those who are still enjoying it, then you are seriously misguided. If I told the haters to STFU, then I'm a white knight who is restricting their right to voice their opinion. But if I said I enjoy it, then the haters tell me to STFU because I'm dumb? Replace 'wizard' with 'Blizzard'. I think Diablo 3 is good, but not great. It still has the potential to be great. Their decision to release the game before completing pvp is the worst ever. They should have taken their time. |

HC is doable if you have the determination and will for it, aside from that some procedures and self discipline during engagements, after that it falls to whatever (ISP, powertrip, PC koyak etc) to kill your character.
Well, being able to get some pocket money out of your game is another kind of "Hardcore" to itself. |

"assuming" you reach inferno that is on HC, then YES i would say lag spikes are a contributor to deaths, normal to hell? no. i'm on unifi 5mbit and my ping is TYPICALLY on 200-300 ms. which is fine *most* of the time, however when blizz/tmnut decides to spike, there isn't much i can do. hell, ive died more than 10 times with serenity ON ME. a serenitied naked corpse mind you, dead without any fire/poison or anything ugly that one usually get when they get maimed/melted/disintegrated to death really now, is any of you guys on hardcore in inferno act 3/4 yet? or rather, in inferno if any at all? i kinda like to play my games to relief stress as the job im working at these days is full of it. if it were me few years ago, during WoW days or earlier, yeah sure, id be hardcore myself doing inferno act 3/4 hardcore mode. these days, naw, i play to relax. not to bust my balls up for a friggin game again im not asking EVERY softcore player to jump ship to HC, im just noting this to ppl that keeps saying ill die coz of lag when i know very well most ppl die due to mistakes instead of lag, the journey from normal to end hell is different imo in HC, im not gonna comment on inferno HC mode as i have not been there yet, still working my way there, thats why im suggesting ppl to try HC, just personal experience, but if ppl dont try and keep blaming the lag, i dont think its fair to judge HC mode like that. |

QUOTE(heaven @ Jul 11 2012, 05:00 PM) HC is doable if you have the determination and will for it, aside from that some procedures and self discipline during engagements, after that it falls to whatever (ISP, powertrip, PC koyak etc) to kill your character. pretty much this.Well, being able to get some pocket money out of your game is another kind of "Hardcore" to itself. and yeah im kinda way past that "hardcore" ness of it all. i mean, i earn decent enough (despite the debt ridden life i have lol) to not "need" additional pocket money so i really just game for the sake of gaming/hobby Added on July 11, 2012, 5:27 pm QUOTE(The Amateur Working Bee @ Jul 11 2012, 05:02 PM) "assuming" you reach inferno that is on HC, then YES i would say lag spikes are a contributor to deaths, normal to hell? no. i finished normal to hell within 2 days after i got my game that is with me LOLLORE my normal mode ( i think i've mentioned this a couple times across this boards)again im not asking EVERY softcore player to jump ship to HC, im just noting this to ppl that keeps saying ill die coz of lag when i know very well most ppl die due to mistakes instead of lag, the journey from normal to end hell is different imo in HC, im not gonna comment on inferno HC mode as i have not been there yet, still working my way there, thats why im suggesting ppl to try HC, just personal experience, but if ppl dont try and keep blaming the lag, i dont think its fair to judge HC mode like that. i also only have 1 death during normal to hell and that is of my own carelessness during my first encounter with "tree pumpkins" on normal mode - yes i sat in it "afk" while comparing gear/chat and died. yeah sure that means hardcore fail. but considering if i skip LOLLORE on normal, i could prolly finish normal -> hell within 24 hours MANY has done it in MUCH LESS time. i could *PROBABLY* step it in inferno EZ PZ. but see, the problem is i would not have confidence in progressing, much less FINISHING inferno hardcore with lagging issues in which kripparian also acknowledged. why would i waste my time on something that i am almost certain i could not accomplished because of issues that are beyond my control? i blame lag because i have very good justification to it, whether you accept it or not. i've always blamed lag especially even more so during the time i was "hardcore" with my games. even 200-400ms ping is a huge difference that means either victory or utter defeat in old WoW PVP/arenas. that lag could mean your entire marine wiping without causing equal, if not substantial damage in contrast on how much you spent for your drop on a drop stutter stepping at mineral line and i think you can always look up my sc2 profile that it can easily show you that im no random "casual player" when it was beta/first year of release. hell i was even placed fairly high during war3 AT ladders. (i've always preferred coop over solo) but yeah because of lag, and how micro intensive war3 is, we dont really get far especially on those bnet war3 online tourneys, at most we got placed into top3 or top 4. but hey, what did whining and b****ing about lag done after all these years since war3? i'll tell you what - nothing. absolutely nothing. and there's nothing you can do to completely solve it. sure vpn helps, but it does not completely 100% solve your geographical latency limitation. hell, i work in an isp company now, i know DAMN well with our current technology, eliminating geographical latency/limitation is IMPOSSIBLE.
