I will be going to Bangkok in mid-February. I am considering whether to take a one-day local tour to Ayutthaya ancient city. Those who have been there, what are your impression and thoughts?

Just came back from my first trip to Bangkok last week. Mostly shopping and eating only. One place that is hardly mentioned in this thread and worth your time to visit is the Or Tor Kor market or Farmers' Market. It's just across the road from Chatuchak Market and accessible from the Kamphaeng Phet MRT station exit 3. It's the place the locals go to for their fresh produce. There is also a nice selection of local food and seafood at the market's food court.
Take a look at this photo of fresh prawns, already grilled and ready to eat. These prawns are damn huge, almost as big as my palm (must see to believe!). One tray costs 1000 Baht, which is cheap considering the size, and easily can feed 6-7 people. Attached thumbnail(s) |

QUOTE(shootingstars83 @ Mar 2 2013, 05:19 PM) Many of the unbranded clothes are cheap, especially for ladies. For branded clothes, Wacoal underwear is worth buying there... I also found their Levi's jeans to be cheaper than in Malaysia, more so during sales. Buy from original Levi's store, of course, not night market.. For affordable souvenirs, take a look at Naraya outlets selling all kinds of fabric stuffs (all types of bags, pouch, case, box for different functions). They are available in most shopping malls - there is even one at Don Muang airport. And their shops are always packed with tourists, especially from East Asia. Prices are low and quality is good. QUOTE(atah @ Mar 2 2013, 09:49 PM) » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Our flight schedule is the same as yours but we will arrive on Saturday. Here's our plan, comments and advices are welcome: Day 1: Saturday 9am: ETA DMK 10am: Drop off luggage at hotel (we booked Tune Asoke, which need to pay for luggage storage. QUOTE(8lackheaven @ Mar 7 2013, 04:30 PM) yeah thanks yiivei.. moreover.. once you reach that boat spot.. you cant return coz its like a isolated area from the main market.. I have not used 'Mama Tour' before, but it was mentioned earlier in the thread as being reliable. They have a few combinations of local tours to floating markets for as low as 600 baht per person. Check out their Facebook page by google.and if you quarrel with the taxi driver.. get rdy to walk home... the market is damnoen saduak floating market Edited to add link: https://www.facebook.com/MamaTravelTour/photos_albums This post has been edited by weim76: Mar 7 2013, 10:05 PM |

QUOTE(felicious @ Apr 2 2013, 12:43 PM) Will be going BKK on Apr 20th for 4D 3N. I stayed in Metz Pratunam in February. Early bird promotion from the hotel website have to pay up front - 1150 baht per night (including wifi and simple breakfast). The place is clean and relatively new. Opposite it is the Grand Watergate hotel, about the same price, but never stayed there before. You can google the location - it's about 5-10 minutes walk to Platinum Mall.Preferable place near to Pratunam. From what I can see here, there are 2 recommended choices. 1. Budacco 2. Baiyoke Boutique. Any other recommendations? Plan to go there to search for good luggage and backpacker bag. Is the price there cheap compared to Malaysia? Where can I find? How much averagely, public taxi from DMK airport to Pratunam area? From DMK to my hotel, the public taxi costs about 285 baht (including airport surcharge - 50 baht and highway toll - 60 baht). |

QUOTE(Matthewksexy @ Apr 16 2013, 08:47 PM) wanted to go holiday during Chinese New Year. I believe hong kong, Taiwan or even China is out of the question. I think you are more concerned about whether shops will be closed during CNY in Bangkok, right? No problem. Even though there are many Chinese in Bangkok, it's not even a public holiday there. Probably only a few shops in Chinatown may close for 1-2 days, or not at all - I am not too sure about that. But most of the city is alive and kicking. I was in Bangkok from 4th day of CNY until 8th - visited Chinatown on the 7th day of CNY, it was full of people and the roads were jammed. Most of the shopping malls were having CNY sales. Bangkok would be the perfect choice, I believe, what you guys think? Good or Bad?? This post has been edited by weim76: Apr 17 2013, 06:20 PM |

QUOTE(yiivei @ Apr 25 2013, 09:10 AM) Sharing my taxi experience there: I didn't face any problems getting metered cab during my trip earlier this year. The trick is to avoid taxis waiting in front of hotels or shopping malls or tourist spots. Just walk further away and flag down a passing taxi. I didn't even have to ask them whether they use meter or not. They automatically reset the meter. The only waiting taxi I used was the metered taxi service from DMK airport.1) to chocolate ville - get a taxi that quote us 400b to bring us there. He didn't use the highway, then we started to mumbling there. Then only he says traffic jam, use highway. We say ok. He expects us to pay for the toll but we rejected. We say the price of 400b shall have the toll included. Then he was not happy, then drive very slow. Also, he doesnt know the exact location. At least, he keep calling chocolate ville to get the direction right. back from chocolate ville - hardly catch a taxi at that area. But, there are a few taxi waiting there. Their price range 400b-600b to return to 93 hotel. - opt for the 1 with lowest price (400b) - show him the map to 93 hotel. he says he know where is it. Ended up, he brought us to the 93 building of which is totally another place at all. Then shows him the map again, then he says its quite far from here. We just keep quiet. Then at the toll there. He requested to add 100b more. Since that he is paying for the toll twice, we agreed to settle at 500b. 2) taxi from 93 hotel to Grand Palace - first three taxi dont want to use meter, and quoted 300-350b. - 4th taxi agree to use meter. So we hop on, then he show us the coupon saying that 1 stop claiming that grand palace open at 11am. we keep argue with him that we do our research and shows that it opens at 8:30. then he starts giving a lot of excuses and so on and so forth. We just get out. - 5th taxi also dont want to use meter, but quoted 200b. So we opt for his service. He shared with us on the scam outside of grand palace. Advice us just walk away and ignore these guys. 3) taxi from wat arun to terminal 21 - few taxi that we ask dont want to use meter, quoted 400b to terminal 21. saying that its far. - managed to get a taxi for 300b. When we hop onto the taxi, he said 300b per pax. We reject. We wanna get off. He said 500, 400, 350... we just ignore. We are firm that we will pay 300b if not, let us off. Then he quiet quiet just bring us there. 4) Terminal 21 to 93 hotel - easily catch taxi at the entrance. Security will assist us with the location. All meter taxi. 73b from terminal 21 to 93 hotel. I just give the guy 100b. 5) wanna try taking tuk tuk to central world from 93 hotel. - quoted 30b. Then we are on the tuk tuk, say 1 stop. we denied. Argue for a while. He is not letting us off. Then we was like asking for the pedestrians for assitance, only he stop and let us off. - actually, it is within walking distance to central world. But, we wanna get a feel of tuk tuk. *Know your right. Just get off if the taxi/tuk tuk say 1 stop when u are in the car or tuk tuk. **Meter taxi is damn cheap if you manage to get one. |

QUOTE(PPZ @ Sep 23 2013, 11:02 PM) I stayed in Metz Pratunam earlier this year. Clean and looks like new. Just a short walk away from the main road to cross over to Platinum Mall. But not all taxis would be willing to send you to the hotel doorstep due to the narrow alleys. The alleys may get deserted and dark if you come back late at night, so it's best to go out in a group or at least with another person. Just stay alert and you will be fine. |

QUOTE(crazyivan @ Oct 8 2013, 11:37 PM) 400B most likely is the standard price if u are booking through the hotel reception or from waiting taxis outside the hotel. Most taxis hailed from the roadside use meter even without u having to ask for it. But for the convenience and peace of mind if u are catching a flight, 400B is not too expensive... But normally, they use the highway (toll included in the 400B).This post has been edited by weim76: Oct 9 2013, 12:13 AM |

QUOTE(bearbear @ Oct 11 2013, 11:36 PM) It's in Pratunam? Not sure about cheapest, but fastest should be by taxi from Don Muang airport. My ride back in February to Metz Pratunam using public taxi (turn left as u exit the arrival hall entrance, just follow signboard), cost me about THB285 (including airport cab surcharge THB50 and toll fare THB40). Not too bad for 2 of us. But not many cab drivers know about Metz Pratunam Hotel. Its best to provide the full address too, just in case.* In my case, I had to use my built-in Nokia GPS in Thai language to guide the driver, as he didn't speak much English.
