Trying to do up my Japan itinerary for January 2013. I'll be spending 1 week in Tokyo area then renting a car to drive down to Nagoya and maybe Osaka and Kyoto before going back to Tokyo to fly back to KL.

I read here that Hakone has some pretty awesome Mt Fuji viewing sites and also a few tourist points. But I'll be passing by Shizuoka as well. Is it better to stop at Hakone for Mt Fuji or go straight to Shizuoka? Most likely stopping at either one of this places before heading to Nagoya.

Anyone knows how much is is roughly for airport transfer (taxi for 4 person) from Haneda airport to hotel? My hotel is in Shinagawa so it's actually only 15km from the airport. Checked online and the lowest is around 8,400 yen. I was told can get for RM200. Is this true?

Btw, should book in advance or better to just get a taxi upon arrival at the airport. I'm reaching around 11pm+.

QUOTE(RegentCid @ Sep 5 2012, 11:47 PM)
Taxi fares typically start around 600-700 yen for the first two kilometers and increase by roughly 100 yen for every additional 500 meters traveled. The cost also increases when the taxi is not moving for a prolonged time. Late in the evening (typically 10pm to 5am), rates are raised by typically 20 percent.
*
That means if we are caught in a jam then the cost will still increase. rclxub.gif
Thanks for the info. Have checked the Limousine Bus but their stops are no where near my hotel.

Thanks for the links, stimix. I checked the 2nd link cause I just google airport limousine and that was the first one that came up.
That one was from Haneda airport to certain hotels. The other one in your links transfer from Haneda airport to Shinagawa station, if I understand correctly. My hotel is somewhere near Gotanda railway station (Toko hotel) so still quite a distance away from Shinagawa station. Still best to get a taxi from airport I guess? My dad wants an airport transfer that will stop us right infront of the hotel lol.

Anyone here rented a car and drove around Japan on their own? Would like to hear your experience. I'll be driving from Tokyo to Nagoya to Ise to Kyoto to Hakone then back to Tokyo airport.

It seems toll cost a bomb over there. rclxub.gif

Got international driving licence?
*
Yes got, we've drove around in many countries before including US, Canada, Europe, China, etc etc. Just haven't drove in Japan so was wondering whether anyone has any experience to share, any advice will be appreciated. I've heard from some travel agencies that it's not easy driving there (but maybe they wanted me to take their tour lol). Then again, other car rental agents are telling me lots of people do drive on their own there. So still would like to get more input from others on this. laugh.gif

Drive is one thing. Parking fees is another hefty sum to cough up.
*
Yup I'm aware of that. laugh.gif
So is petrol and toll and most of the hotels don't provide parking.

^ I just came back from my Japan trip a few hours ago. Rented a car to drive around Nagano. Best day I ever had in Japan. I've only driven for a month in Malaysia so I'm a complete newbie and it was still very easy for me to drive. Nagano is pretty rural though, it might be much more difficult to drive in the cities (though trains+subway in the major cities are extremely well connected so I don't really see the need to drive).

Would really really recommend a countryside rural drive. Fantastic experience.
*
Nice! Good to know. biggrin.gif
I won't be driving to Nagano though. We won't be driving around in the city but we will be getting a car from Tokyo and driving back to the airport to drop it off.

I guess it's very easy to drive around the quieter towns. Any experience in driving on the highways?

Almost all the hotels there are sold out for next January. rclxub.gif

Got any recommendations for hotels in Nagoya?
Prefer rooms that can fit family of 4. Ryokan or western rooms also can.

3) Is ryokan suitable for kids? Or mostly for people who can rough it out eg. budget / backpackers?

*
As far as I've checked, ryokans are hella expensive. rclxub.gif
And most of them provide meals as well, personal service I guess. I'll be staying at a ryokan in Ise next month, will see how it is then.

you can try meitetsu toyota hotel. last time i stay there for single room. quite nice the room. they don't have wifi but they will provide the LAN cable if u want to use the internet. very fast internet, around 40~70mbps. breakfast included (western & Japanese cuisine)

5 min walking to the nearest train station (toyota-shi). direct shuttle bus in front of hotel to CHUBU airport and vice versa.
*
Thanks. How much was it per night for your single room?

Hi, could you share your plan for Nikko because I also plan for a day trip to Nikko.
*
We left hotel around 7am. Our hotel is in front of Gotanda station so had to take train to Tokyo station first.
The shinkansen will only take you to Utsunomiya, after that you have to change train to JR Nikko line to reach Nikko.
Tokyo to Utsunomiya around 50 minutes
Utsunomiya to Nikko around 40 minutes (train leaves hourly, so might want to take note of that)

We reached Nikko station around 10am. Bought the World Heritage Bus Pass 500yen per person.
Took the bus straight to Omotesando bus stop that stops outside the temple area. Bought the combined ticket 1,300yen per adult, 450yen per child. This one included treasure house and botanical garden. Took our time to visit all the shrines and temples there. Had lunch at a nearby tourist souvenir shop, cost about 1,300yen per dish.

Around 3.15pm, took the bus from outside Taiyuin Temple there to Shinkyo bridge. After Shinkyo, we waited for the bus and go back to Nikko main town area to walk around. When time to go, we walk back to Nikko station and back track the way we came. Reach Tokyo around 6pm.

When are you going? Winter not much daylight so we had to rush a bit in visiting the temples.

I'd like to ask if anyone knows where I can get a range of kitkats in Tokyo pls! I biggrin.gif
*
Airport should have. I bought my kitkats in a small souvenir shop in Kyoto. When I was in the departure lounge of Haneda Airport, there were also a lot of different kitkat flavours and in bigger boxes too.

Since Air Asia is doing promo now, I am planning to reach Tokyo and depart back from Osaka.

Is this a good idea? Going to travel about 10 days
*
Yea, do that. I stupid bought return flight KL-Tokyo. My last night was spent in Osaka. Lucky flight was late at night. Morning check out took shinkansen to Kobe for Kobe beef then take shinkansen to Tokyo and straight to airport after lunch.

We did around 10 nights as well, visited Tokyo, Nikko, Osaka, Kyoto (didn't manage to cover all), Nagoya and Hiroshima. It was just nice but would be better if we spent less time in Tokyo and more time in Kyoto. laugh.gif
