QUOTE(zstan @ May 22 2013, 12:00 AM)
if i were to apply the visa based on the fact that i will be attending a conference, does that mean i dont have to submit my bank balance statement?

really confused for students like me @@

aiyoyo...what's so difficult to just visit the embassy website and read a bit?

http://www.my.emb-japan.go.jp/English/visit.html

pretty sure you don't need to submit bank balance statement, but if you're going for a conference as a student, your school/uni has to prepare the required letters and documents. i think you don't even need to handle all the tasks, if your school/uni is sending you there, then they'll have to prepare everything. at max you submit your personal particulars and photos within visa specs (different from your IC/license photo!).

if the conference is organized by org/party in japan, then they'll have to prepare the documents and you'll have to go to embassy to do the rest, i guess...

i was with my wife for her business trip there. she applied her visa on business reason, while I applied on tourist reason. we both got our visa.

at immigration in Japan, she ended up questioned longer than usual at the counter, than me. i guess the govt there is more worried on people coming work there (in case they overstay work forever), rather than tourists like us.

if you're trying to apply for holiday, not just you need to provide bank statement, but also company letter...but you can always have your parents as guarantor - need bank statement and company letter as well. hmm.gif

Some ppl were even denied entry and sent home despite having approved visa
*
it really depends on the situation.

To ensure smooth entry, just don't do anything stupid/bad then you can enter.

I went there alone and it was a smooth entry. The immigration officer who was checking my bag also chat with me a bit in english lol.

that's pretty bold statement, so far i haven't heard anyone mentioning exceptions (unless special reason) where gaijin don't need visa to enter Japan...

Few dozen pages back, or maybe in V3 or earlier, got some pipu said went to Japan without Visa. Got pulled out from the regular immigration queue into interview room, check documents, etc, but eventually was allowed in.

QUOTE(scorgio @ May 21 2013, 11:15 PM)
I've seen some people spent 10 mins or longer in front of the counter.

Last April when I went, queue right behind a huge Thai tour group, ohmygawd 4 out of 5 people in the queue never fill in form properly doh.gif

You were unlucky i guess. That time of lining up during my trip in September, there were an officer helping tourist to check their form to see if their form is filled up correctly before going to the counter, so it was all smooth.

that's interesting, but i think if the reason is valid and convincing, there shouldn't be much problem, but still too much risk to take so just apply a visa. hmm.gif

1) Too many to mentions, from snacks, figurines, amulets from temple, fridge magnet, key chains. Just bring more cash, dont think that you cant find suitable souvenirs

2) Not sure if there is any crab buffet, but i would like to recommend this http://douraku.co.jp/ super nice and fresh, if you go there before 4PM there are special price for sets

You should book it ASAP as end Nov is one of the peak season for Japan!

You can compare more like using hotels.com (they do have sales like 50% off sometimes), hotelclub, booking.com

Thanks for the information. If my plan is to visit around Kansai area only (likely to go around Osaka, Kyoto and Nara), is it advisable to stay in one hotel in Osaka only? To travel around the areas mentioned, what would be the best transport mode? Train or Bus? If it is train, can I or should I book now online? Roughly what would be the cost as we are on tight budget.

Osaka expensive. U should stay in Kyoto cheaper. Can buy 1-day bus pass in Kyoto at the bus terminal outside Kyoto station

if you like the vibrant & busy city, osaka lo. If you are going to relax and enjoy, kyoto is best. personally i will choose kyoto. you always can take the train go to osaka, it just 15mins.

youre right. in kyoto, buy the 1-day Bus pass, best is if you can combine with train/subway, some route is not convenient if only travel by bus and it's wasting time.

You may also consider Kansai Thru Pass, depends on your schedule. Do your own maths and compare.

Just booked my tickets for my Japan trip over Hari Raya.

Cathay Pacific : RM1800 all in return.

By comparison, MAS was RM2700.
