For me I think that shitty stats that disappoints kinda fits the 'Legendary' title. Before anyone flames me let me just say that:

1. I've not played D2 before
2. My reason for 'Legendary' having disappointing stats is as follows:

It's derived from Legends and as we all know, legends are always blown way out of proportions when compared to the real thing.

How legends starts:

The real situation : One guy beat up 3 mooks in record time.

Person A (first hand observer) to Person B : Wah! He beat up a few bad guys within minutes! Incredible!

Person B to Person C : Wah! He beat up a bunch of guys in minutes you know?!!

Person C to Person D : Wah! He beat up a horde or bad guys in just a flash!!

Person D to Person E : Wah! An entire troop was eliminated within seconds!!

Repeat the above cycle ad-infinitum with huge amount of time passing and you will have your legend. Thus legend is always far more glorious than the real thing...

LOL! Just my interpretation lah...

It's like Excalibur. In D3, you expect to find an awesome sword only to find a toothpick.

Reason for the whole crappy legendary explosion is because Blizz allowed random stat rolls on legendaries. And most of the stats just do not go with the 'feel' or objective of a particular legendary. And there is barely any stat that is legendary exclusive, like the old famous 'Cannot Be Frozen' on Thundergod's Vigor and Ravenfrost in D2. Holy ****, I still remember the names after 12 years. Legendary in D2 is legendary.

Case in point : Greatsword. Big bad 2 handed sword. Got a mental picture? But instead of making you stronger, it makes you smarter! +80 INT!

well tbh i think it was a good thing they made legendaries piece of shit anyways, take a look at AH, in 2 mths+ alone, AH has like tons of legendaries, if they were to retain their D2 status, D3 is dead within the 1st mth itself, coz everyone whoppin inferno diablo with visa, mastercard, amex legendaries

That's the reason. If you think about the AH, then it makes sense. But it shouldn't be about the AH. It should be about Diablo. It should about player experience, the familiar rush we all remember when we found a set or legendary item in Diablo 2. This is just one more effect that the AH and RMAH has on the game, and I can't help feel that money is creeping into the game at the expense of a better gaming experience.
