anybody knows y PS keeps on crashing?
i have read n there is no such thing as cn request public IP or private IP..
we have both of them..
*
read more , while its true that any internet connection to internet must have a Public IP BUT

the main difference is where is the Public IP located in the network hierarchy.

For normal maxis ftth setup
users are given private IP at their home and kept the public IP at their own server/equipment. In this scenario, for you to reach the Internet, you must pass through their server/equipment. Mind you, this particular public IP could be shared with other maxis ftth to reach the internet. Typically, this type of setup is

1 public IP(maxis data center) -- > many, maxis private IPs (users home router) --> many, your home private IPs(users ipad, phone, notebook, pc)

so, for data communication in the internet others will only be able to see your public IP, once data routed to the public IP, maxis equipment will then have to route it to the appropriate users (private IPs)

For maxis ftth setup with public IP
users are given a public IP (dynamic one of course) at their home directly. So in this case, between you and the internet is just the home router and this public IP is not shared by others at any point in time. Typically, this tpe of setup is

1 public IP(users home router) --> many, your home private IPs (users ipad, phone etc etc)

by using this setup, you have direct control over the the traffic if your router is capable of doing it and of course if you have admin access to it.

Note: In most cases, normal internet activities doesn't really which setup you have, what important is you have a connection and those routers will manage the route appropriately. However for example a cctv setup, you will require certain ports to be forwarded to the local private IP of the cctv equipments, therefor people suggest to get the public IP setup so that you have control over the router. In fact, cctv setups will even work using the normal setup IF Maxis helps you to port forward the necessary ports from the internet to your private IP (However, that might create management mess and most likely there are strict protocols to follow to allow the changes which means they will most likely wont do it for you)

BTW, public IP or private IP have no relation to your LINK speed. Download speed MIGHT be affected though depending the software you use. LINK speed and Download speed is not the same ya.

so may i know what is the conclusison?

should we request public ip?

what is the pro and con?

how about the security for public ip vs private ip?

in what circumstances you should get a public ip, asides from cctv purpose?

hope someone can make it plain simple instead of too technical
*
what conclusion ?

basically, if you are not facing any problem with the initial setup, why bother ?

In summary, requesting public IP empowers the user with the ability to manage their internet connection to a certain extend. Of course you would need to first understand what is your need and translate that requirements into command (eg. port forwarding). It doesn't means once you get public IP your eg. cctv will work automagically unless both the router and equipment supports UPNP. You still need to configure the router properly.

Common purpose is to have the ability to port forward in order to use cctv, personal web/ftp hosting, windows remote desktop, improving NATs etc etc.

In terms of security, if you don't know much about networking and stuffs I would say stay with private IP setup if it doesn't affect you with any problem. Hackers will need to penetrate Maxis proxy/equipment/router first before they reach u if they come from the Internet. However, alot of time its users themselves that initiated the link to hacker LOL, so in that sense both setup is the same.

my installation is taking place now, seems like they are able to pull the fibre cable straight into my house (I stay in a condo)  thumbup.gif the cable run through the existing 'tunnel' where phone line is residing and go all the way down to the maxis 'station' in the downstair, lot of wiring work to be done I must say.
*
How much would they charge you for that?

Maxis installation completed today

appointment 9:30am
- not on time, so was calling 1800 to ask at 10am
- while waiting for someone to answer from the customer service, they called me instead and tell me sorry for the delay, their engineer on the way up to my condo
- ask him about TM engineers, maxis engineer say they are already here at the communication room doing the necessary
- 10:30am TM engineer came up
- Both party does their settings
- 11am officially connected to Maxis Fiber
- Maxis did some speedtest for record and reporting purpose (via LAN), i saw the speed was fine, hovering 9-10Mbps for both upload and download
- ping was about 35ms, didn't know which server he chose though
- i did some speedtest using my phone over wifi, got roughly the same upload and download and ping was around 24-29ms

haven't got time to really test the stability out. Hopefully everything is ok.

Can your phone/tablet detect adequate Wifi signal from the furthest point away from Thomson router in your house ?

Observe this issue:
When few wifi devices connected to the network, it takes 5 to 10 seconds in white blank page to load up a web page link, sometimes immediate load up, sometimes waited till time out and page unavailable.
*
since my place is a condo, so not much problem with coverage, but i did test with wifi analyzer and the signal seems normal for now.

hmmm, after 1 night of light use, internet died on me once and require a reboot on the equipments

did some simple test on the thomson router and i'll say its wifi connection maybe the main issue that cause people to complain.

i did pingtest on a laptop which is about 8 feet away from the thomson(wifi signal is good), i repeatedly get D and F grade for my internet connection. However, speedtest results says that bandwidth is there about 9-10Mb

then i move the laptop to 2 feet from the thomson, repeated the test and get A grade for the connection. Speedtest results is similar like above.

in summary, the wifi is useable and it doesn't affect your download speed much if you still in good signal range. BUT, it does affect alot on ping response, jittery, packet lost which is pretty bad considering 2 ft vs 8 ft which is not that far apart.

really hope some manufacturer will come up with a better router replacement.

oh ya btw, LAN have no such issues on thomson

Hi HappyGuy, my previously used for 1mbps streamyx linksys router is also the same UFO router, WRT54G2(mine is v1).

Could u teach me how to setup Access Point with WRT54G2?
Sorry please tell me the detailed settings for WRT54G2 and also for the Thomson? sad.gif

======================================================

And......

Who could tell me how to check whether I'm on Public IP or Private IP?
I didn't ask for change of IP type since installation. So mine is in default (according to first post, should be Private IP in default).

But I checked via IP detector websites(eg. http://www.ip-adress.com/ , http://whatismyipaddress.com/, blabla..) and all show 14.192.x.x (IP format just same as those IP in picture posted by public IP member).
Summore everytime I reboot/reconnect router, the IP will change(like 14.192.x.1 becomes 14.192.x.25) everytime as usual.
So this means I'm Public IP? But...
when I check in Thomson router page(Home > Broadband Connection > Internet Services > eInternet), IP address stated in the page is 10.x.x.x(I know this is Private IP because it starts with 10 due to the reason of the IP range of 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255 are Private IPs).

So conclusion is I'm actually on Public IP or Private IP??? rclxub.gif  rclxub.gif  rclxub.gif
*
Confirm private IP .
Another way to confirm, your account is xxxxx@home.maxis.com.my rather than xxxxx@public.maxis.com.my

anyone can confirm how to save the Thompson config file?

even i login with admin previlege the option is not there (while the generic Thomson router should have the option)

I can't afford to configure my routing/port fwd configuration all over again in case the router down or something

The interface is damn too slow
*
bro , i tried to add port forwarding rules but it doesn't seems to stick, after i click ADD the page just refresh and i don't see the new record inserted. Do i need to login as admin rather than MaxisBB to add those port forwarding rules ?

Faced my first service disruption last night with error AUTHENTICATION failure.

I read about it here that we need to get Maxis to reset the account and restart all equipment to get going again.
So i called them and they serves me music and advertisement for more than an hour. Fed up, go post at their forum and no one answers.

Then i remembered i requested for Public IP yesterday evening, so i tried with @public as username and it went through !!!! All the hassle just because they did changes to my account and FAILED to inform me, sigh.

In this case, Maxis are so fast (changing my account), so slow (following up with customer).

The fun fact is, Maxis helper in their forum just answered my request for Public IP saying "we are in the midst of reviewing your request, we will update you once we have more info" , common man !! WTF is this, I'm already using Public IP now and you are still reviewing my request ? hahaha

Info:
Now that I've got public IP, I would like to inform xbox gamers that xbox LIVE is working as it should if you set your xbox to be at DMZ in the thomson router

Got my 10mbps from Maxis yesterday, getting good speed but ping average about 30~35ms, probably due to a high rise building that runs on copper?

It is actually calculated this way:
Pro-rate bill amount: ((14 - 7) / 31 * 218) - 100 Perpetual discount
*
yeah, my first bill seems to be prorated at around 80 bucks minus that with the discount so no payment required for the first 3 weeks ? haha .. i'm not complaining though tongue.gif

still face the intermittent disconnection issue. All lights will be like normal and even the thomson will say internet is connected but no machine can online until i manually disconnect and reconnect or wait longer than 10 minutes maybe. Most of the time i face this issue i will go manually connect/disconnect.

The timing for it to happen seems random, can be few day once, or few times within a couple of hour.

For the record, I'm on Public IP setup.

Apart from that, consider everything else normal la.

you cannot connect via direct lan or wifi, or both?

if wifi, maybe you can change the channel to solve the issue

if both also cannot connect, u better call cs, could be thomson router/line issue
*
both. I'm thinking its something related to backend but i will keep monitor as its random, its very hard to report the problem to the CS if i could ever manage to speak to them. Tried to call them a few times and each time end up nobody pick up the calls after 30-40 minutes of advertisement and song , sigh ...
