Update: I've had many emails and questions about whether USB-OTG (On The Go) is supported on the Nexus 7, and didn't touch on it when I originally hit publish becuause I wasn't entirely sure. I've now confirmed that USB-OTG is supported on the Nexus 7, and works on the current Android 4.1 non-final build that has been sampled. That's encouraging, and I'll test it myself when I get home and to my miniUSB OTG adapter

Btw, I opened a new Google/Gmail account, put my country as Australia and made an oder for a 16GB Nexus 7. It'll be delivered to my sister who lives there. Supposed to ship mid-July, so most probably will get my hands on one early Aug. Still not sure whether she's coming back or I have to pay for the UPS delivery. Who knows, by then it might even be released here already, although I'd still opt for the Oz version cos of the Australian Play Store and AUD$25 rebate for Play Store purchases.

I doubt Asus will release their own version so soon, as the Nexus will eat its sales. Plus, I'm sure they have some sort of understanding with Google. Anyways, if it does come out, good for you. I personally won't buy any model that doesn't have a Nexus name on it.

Anyways, I got the order confirmation receipt. Stupid thing is; the receipt states it's going to be sent from Google Asia Pacific Singapore to my sister's address in Australia, and Singapore doesn't even have a launch date yet!! So basically my Nexus 7 is going from Singapore to Australia and then back to where I live in Singapore again. WTF!! O_o

how bout warranty?

Most probably won't be supported. Best case scenario will be that Asus Malaysia rep might contact US branch on your behalf and give you details on how to ship it to their US tech department, at your own cost obviously.

I would've gotten a local set as well, but I wanted access to the Australian Play store. Singapore and Malaysia Play stores don't have much movies and music to buy.

Btw, as far as I know, the $25 worth of free app purchases gets credited into the Google account that makes the order, not the credit card.... at least that's the impression I get from reading the various online documentation. So I'm not sure for people ordering in bulk from the US. It would be good if someone could confirm this.

From what i read at XDA the 25$ will be credited to the account that's added to the device. hmm.gif
*

I hope you're right. That would make for a much nicer proposition, as long as they don't ask for credit card details. But then, what if you register more than one account on the device? Does every account get the $25, or just the first one that activates the device?

That's probably required by Samsung's bloated memory-hogging TouchPiss UI. Who knows? Even on ICS, it was found that having a few apps loaded on the SIII almost filled the RAM. Further testing indicated Samsung's skin as the biggest culprit.

im new, so that means i can't transfer my pdf+photo from usb to n7?  hmm.gif

Just to be clear, for people who don't know. You can still tether you computer and transfer files or sync via USB. You just can't mount USB thumbrives or ext-HDDs. Not much different from the Moto Xoom in that respect.

QUOTE(Racerx @ Jun 30 2012, 02:20 PM)
You can use USB-OTG or you can get a non-Nexus device. IMO cloud storage isn't a viable alternative here in Malaysia .
*

Sadly, this is true. I live in Singapore where I get a 100mbps up 50mbps down connection for $SG50 (approx RM120). The 4mbps Streamyx connection in my mom's house in Johor is already more expensive than that. Even cheapest Unifi is more expensive and only gives 5mbps. Plus they have a 60GB limit (though I think it's not implemented yet). Sad state of affairs indeed sad.gif

For mobile use, I plan to tether the Nex7 to my mobile phone (wifi-hotspot mode). For now I'm stuck with 3.5G, but might upgrade to LTE in a few months (we just got LTE in Singapore, I think Malaysia getting end of this year, but probably KL only first), so speeds should improve. There's still a download limit for all mobile plans, unfortunately.

i wont risk my important data on the onboard storage...especially sensitive data....its easy gone if you got a firmware corruption or you sent to rma  cool2.gif

i worked in some industry.....i know how risky to store in onboard storage.

some might not agree with me......until your information leaked then dont blame lolz...

just like edison case  cool2.gif
*

But you'll risk storing sensitive data on an SD card? This doesn't make sense. Flash memory has been known to be unreliable, whether on board of external. You're risking data either way. I've seen phones lose all info onboard just as often as I've seen phones wipe their SD card.

About info "leaks". You're using a Google service!! Your info is already out in the open, my friend. They already know almost everything about you, so they can obviously apply high level math and behavioural prediction to determine that you've got that list of porn stored in your "secure" SD card anyway.

for me personally, 16GB is enough......i dont even use external sdcard for my SGS2
*

Exactly!! If I was traveling somewhere, I could easily get 10 or 20 x 320kbps mp3 albums on a 16GB Galaxy Nexus, plus my documents and images. I don't believe anyone is that stupid to listen to FLAC or another loss format with a phone's low-end audio hardware anyway.

If I was on an extended stay overseas, then I'd probably need to bring a laptop to get real work done anyway, so what's the point?

QUOTE(herojack41 @ Jun 30 2012, 06:09 PM)
lets take it simple.

in your case....im pretty sure its user problem  biggrin.gif
*

and in your case.... I'm pretty sure;

1. You need to learn how your device keeps a /var/log (or equivalent) of whatever it reads, whether internal or external.

2. You have no idea how flash based memory works.

3. You need to learn proper English (eg: the right way to phrase your opening sentence is "Let's MAKE it simple")

I have no idea what "industry" you worked in before, but I sure as hell hope you don't work there anymore, for the good of people buying the products.

This is why I seldom venture outside the Linux and Open Source or Networking/P2P sub-forums. Most people in other sections don't know know jack sh*t about anything and just repeat the useless drivel they read in blogs or faceboob!!

Asus Malaysia Facebook page no mention about Nexus7. Hmmm really strange indeed. Too quiet for a new product.
*

A few possible explanations. Take your pick.

1. They have no intention of releasing a Nexus 7 in Malaysia/SEA, in which case you might get a renamed Asus model. It'll have similar specs to the Nexus, but it won't be a Nexus, since it'll come with a bloated skin, no timely updates and super-encrypted bootloader lock.

2. Pre-orders/demand for Nexus 7 in the release countries might be massive, hence they're waiting for supply chains and manufacturing output to meet initial demand and stabilize before they plan for other regions.

3. Google might be working really hard to set up a Play Store with enough content for our region, or better yet, maybe an International Play Store (I hope, but unlikely) before they start marketing here.

I'm also curious about the taxation issue. I ordered from the Australian Play store. I have an Australian address and credit card (my sister lives in that address currently). I'm not sure about the taxation, but I live in Singapore now (I'm still Malaysian though), and as far as I know, computing products don't get taxed here. Not sure about to Malaysia. Shouldn't have tax, but there's always the risk of some corrupt monkey working in customs making things difficult for you.

The thing that annoys me more is this;

See the "Purchased from" address? I f#@kin live in the same country it's shipping from!! WTF, man!!
Maybe I should call that Asus SG phone number and find out if they can just deliver it straight to me here. They can keep the AU$19.99 shipping money, I just want it delivered faster and don't want to pay for the tablet's "return flight".

Singapore damn small I think your tablet is only 1KM away from you right now biggrin.gif
*

I know where the place is.
Not exactly 1km, but I can get in the car and drive there within 10 minutes from my apartment, including traffic light stops.
Hell, I could probably even cycle there in around 30 - 40 minutes.

It feels like a person ordering a congkak set from Amazon when the makcik that makes it lives next door. doh.gif

I'll call the Google Asia Pacific office on Monday and see how it goes.

Guys, pre-orders may start shipping next week  !!! smile.gif

http://thedroidguy.com/2012/07/google-nexu...ping-next-week/

The news started picking up after a customer was told by Google that he cannot cancel his order as it had already entered the shipment and delivery preparations. Now we’re not sure if this could count as official confirmation, but something is better than nothing right? Further, Staples’ listing of the tablet mentions that it will start shipping between the 12th and 17th of July.

It's not uncommon for these kinds of highly hyped devices to ship earlier than expected, just to get them into customer's hands faster in order to maintain the launch momentum. I just hope they maintain a high level of QC even if they're rushing to meet demand. Would be bad publicity if many early devices had problems, especially for people like us who are ordering from a foreign market.

I'm wondering why that customer wanted to cancel, though. :-/

^ About the screen.
It's actually more common than you think. Only Sharp IPS designs seem to avoid that issue. Most LG and Wintek (who make the Nexus 7 screen) displays have it. It's just a matter of waiting for the display to gain some temperature, then the image retention goes away. It also becomes significantly less pronounced after a few days of use. You can also see it on a few handsets, but you probably don't notice it because smaller 4 - 5" screens tend to heat up faster.

About the camera.
I've never seen anyone hold up a tablet to take pictures before, tbh. Think about it; if you're outside with your Nexus 7, you'll probably bring your phone along anyway, so might as well use the phone. The only potential loss of functionality I can see are with augmented reality apps, but those aren't common at this time, and probably won't be for a while to come.

its always a war.. biggrin.gif

I like Apple products: Macbook & iPhone, but not the iPad.. i like Android tablet more.
*

Similar case for me. As a full time Linux, OpenBSD and Solaris user, I personally find Android a joke compared to the real Linux distributions when it comes to security. Currently use a Galaxy Nexus, but I might switch back to the iPhone of maybe something new like Jolla or Firefox OS next year. I can't stand the fact that the OS I use on something as vital as a phone is a hotbed for malware and criminals. I've not gotten any infections because I know what to look for, but it's just the dirty reputation of Android (like Windows for desktops) that I don't like being associated with.

For tablets, on the other hand, I don't mind Android at all. In fact, I'd say I prefer Android on tablets since I can hack away at the source and try my hand at some app development on a bigger screen without having to run an emulator.. I'll use a separate google account with my Nex7, and since there's no phone number associated like with a smartphonephone, privacy isn't that much of an issue for me, as long as I make sure to use a fresh new debit/electron card from a savings account, so that it doesn't tie in to my work-accounts/info.

For laptops, I prefer ThinkPads though. I refuse to use a laptop that doesn't come with a nipple/clitoris, since I despise touchpads. ThinkPads are friendlier towards open source operating systems as well, which is essential for me.

@pspfan is probably playing with his right now.

Mine was shipped on the 19th, so hopefully it'll reach my Australian address by Monday or Tuesday, or at least I hope so. I have a friend coming back from there on Wednesday, so if it arrives in time, she can just bring it back for me and I'll save on shipping costs.

Got my Nexus 7 off a friend yesterday, on discount because the accelerometer cacat.
Whoa!! accelerometer seems like a big issue to me? O_O

Now I need to add that to my checklist of stuff to check when my Nex7 arrives tomorrow evening;

1. Screen lifting
2. Light leaking
3. Loose micro-USB
4. Dead pixels
5. Flickering under auto-dim mode
6. The thing just dying after first charge.
7. Defective accelerometer.

Anything else?
