It has been almost 5 years I didn't do any exercise. 2 months ago I decided to sign up Fitness First. Started first week with treadmill but got bored, so end up doing Body Combat & Steps only at least 3 times a week.

Yesterday, my colleagues who are frequent runners asked me to join them to run. So I tried.

Today I tried again. Tried using RunKeeper on Phone, kind of cool app. Here are the stats.

I was never a runner. Now, I'm kind of interested in running. Lot's to learn from you guys smile.gif

My legs aches now. But upper body doesn't feel like did any exercise from the run. Is it normal?

Seriously, brother. You are very fast!!! 5 years didn`t do any exercise still can run 6.27min/km!! Honestly, my average pace only 7:20min/km now. You are so good!! Keep it out!! Brother!!  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif

I think with 2 months of doing cardio class (body combat / steps), it did help build my body fitness level to a certain level. Will keep up smile.gif

QUOTE(boyz @ Sep 30 2012, 12:08 AM)
let me answer your upper half part, yes thats normal. however do not forget to train your upper body. higher arm swing rates will increase your tempo/pace. practise this arm swings from eg. yoga/push ups, deltoid pushups will not just tone your arms but decrease your numbness in the Long runs. however it will come naturally once you do more training.

to keep yourself interested, know why you want to run smile.gif find your reason.

Thanks for the tip. I think I will work out at the gym as usual on the weekdays and practice running on the weekend.

Today my legs ache a lot, but feel satisfied. There is a blister too at my feet.

I just registered Live Great Run 2012 (12km). Will give it a try.

Btw, during practice do I aim for more distance to build up stamina.... or shorter distance but faster speed?

Today is my 3rd day in a row, my legs ache but spirit wanted to run, so went ahead
Distance: 4.58km
Duration: 29:17
Avg Pace: 6.24 min/km
Avg Speed: 9.38 km/h

Only 1 round and really cannot already. Kaki mau putus sad.gif

Anyway, I noticed when I run, my landing seems to be heavy. Kind of like dragging feet. Is it because lack of strength or bad habit? Any advice?

Btw, I'm staying near Desa Park City, so running there is convenient. Any other places to run around Kepong area?

I'm new here.
I usually run 3-5km in the morning just to keep in shape.
Thinking of getting a heart rate monitor for run to ensure I stay in within my target heart rate . Is it worth it? I don't see many using it?

I'm noob runner too, and almost wanted to buy a HRM/GPS watch. But then I found an alternative (till at least I make sure I really take running seriously and not hangat).

If your phone supports GPS and is smartphone (Android/iPhone), you can try install this free app
http://runkeeper.com

It helps you track your pace, distance, duration, route, etc. I now train by knowing my limit of avg pace. My body can take pace of 6min range, but when goes 5min range then I loose breath fast. So I know I'm not strong enough to stay too long that speed.

You probably can give the app a try before spending money on the HRM/GPS watch cause not cheap smile.gif

Keep to  < 10% increment on weekly mileage, better be safe than sorry.

QUOTE(leanman @ Oct 8 2012, 09:19 AM)
For beginners, its better to run on time rather than distance. Set target for yourself on how much time you want to run, say 45 mins and go for it. forget about the distance, when you are comfortable, slowly increase the time. From there, you change focus to the distance. Why? because each, diff terrain plays a part. IF you run on hilly, say 45 mins give you 6km but on flat it gives you say 7.5 km. so forget about distance, what you want is continuous of 45 mins of training/running regardless of the distance

Thanks. Good advises notworthy.gif

01) For the We Run Kl 10k 2012 - Is there finishing medal? or just finishing Tee only?

02) My female colleague couldn't make it for Park City Run. I'm a male. She is letting go her bib to me.

I couldn't find info on the T'Shirt design on their site. Is it going to be same unisex design. If yes I can probably wear hers. If not, can I wear other T'Shirt or is it a must to wear the official T'Shirt?

Since you mentioned 3 years ago, do aware that shoes' rubber have lifespan, can be wear & tear due to weather (sunny/rain/humid)

If you are serious about running, maybe can invest on a pair of new running shoes.  nod.gif

p/s: I wear Injinji too tongue.gif

3yrs shoes...mayb tat not a running shoes, or mayb cushion is hard or your feet grow bigger n not longer fit your shoes...
i just using tesco choice socks, RM10 3 pair. Just the the most soft and thin can aldy smile.gif

I bought it 3 years ago, and only wore it few times. So I thought can still use without knowing there is lifespan.

I press the cushion where the feet supposed to step on, it is very hard. Like no cushion. Is it supposed to be soft there?

Here is the photo of the shoe. Nike Downshifter II. I'm not even sure whether it is running shoes.

Tht's why I asked.. I know of no Nike shop that provides this kinda service... Nike in Malaysia is quite slow in the running scene, waayyy behind New Balance in terms of vest sponsorship...

U can check Ur feet type at selected Adidas shops, New Balance shops & also Brooks shop... I checked my feet type at Brooks Sunway, they have a new computerized feet type machine... U stand on a gel pad then the computer will calculate pressure areas & analyze Ur feet type.. complete with shoe model recommendations... cool...
*
Thanks. I'll go checkout brooks later. Heard got rm150 rebate for old shoes.

I think I over excited. Already registered 6 runs (some is get from friends who couldn't make it)

Nike we run kl 10km
Putrajaya night run 21km
Penang bridge 21km
Malakoff kl 12km
Great eastern run 12km
Park city run 10km

I didn't know Malakoff got hill till after registered.

Btw, park city run 10km also have a challenging hill at about 6km. Before that also few ups and down. I tried that hill, no energy to reach top. Have to work on it...

Went to Brooks (The Curve). The guy there very helpful. Took out few shoes and explained to me what kind of shoes is for what, etc. Too bad no high tech machine to measure my feet, but his experience was good.

After going through at least 5 pairs, decided to choose this.

Brooks Glycerin 10

Cushioning was good. After putting it on, it makes my old shoe really feels so bad. The guy said my old shoe has already harden and cannot be used for running. It will hurt my feet and knee. No wonder every time I run blister and nail pain. I hope this new shoe will solve that problem.

The Rm150 rebate still valid, but he said my new shoe after 30% discount is cheaper than after the RM150 rebate. So he asked me to use the 30% and keep my old shoes smile.gif

Went test run with new shoes. Comfort wise, feels big different compared to my expired shoe thumbup.gif

Old shoes 10km - 1:05:20
New shoes 10km - 0:59.41

Speed improved but barely managed to finish it. I think I ran faster cause of comfort but body not ready sweat.gif
