I'm noob runner too, and almost wanted to buy a HRM/GPS watch. But then I found an alternative (till at least I make sure I really take running seriously and not hangat).
If your phone supports GPS and is smartphone (Android/iPhone), you can try install this free app
http://runkeeper.comIt helps you track your pace, distance, duration, route, etc. I now train by knowing my limit of avg pace. My body can take pace of 6min range, but when goes 5min range then I loose breath fast. So I know I'm not strong enough to stay too long that speed.
You probably can give the app a try before spending money on the HRM/GPS watch cause not cheap

Few phone apps that I have tried :
1) Endomondo (Available for Android, iOS, WP7, BlackBerry and some Symbian phones)
- nice app, and suitable for those who do more than just running (walking, cycling, hills etc). I am currently using this. Limited functionality in free version (can't set time goal and
2) Nike+ (available for Android and iOS only)
- only for running. This is the only app which still tracks your distance etc even though there is no GPS coverage. My 2nd choice. However, Fb sharing and web statistics are very poor compared to Endomondo. I can't really access some of my running stats.
3) Sports Tracker (Available for Android, iOS, WP7 and Symbian phones)
- nice app but I seldom use this because when I tried on WP7 and Symbian, there is no voice feedback (saying how many KMs you have done etc). But it is a nice app for multi-activities.
4) Adidas MiCoach (So far seen on Android and iOS. Not sure on other phones)
- Similar to Nike+ but the stats are far worse (phone and also web). Only used once and I did not use it after that. Nice app though. Unfortunately, I need more details about my run which this one couldn't provide.
