Hi all,
Being a non-dairy person for the last 13 years, I have been eating foods that do not have dairy products in them. Why did I decide to stop taking dairy products? Well, there was one time when I was overseas and I ate a lot of burritos with cheese in them and I got a breakout the next day. It had to be the cheese that I ate the day before, so I did some research on the Internet. Indeed, research have found that there's a link between acne problem and milk/dairy products. Milk is probably the most congesting food out there (unless you can find raw milk where the original enzymes and good bacteria are still intact).
So I decided from that day onwards that I'll not take dairy products anymore. (Later I also read an email that there's a link between cancer and dairy products too but that's another story). Non-dairy products are good for people with lacto-intolerance. Did you know that close to 90% of the Malaysian population are lactose-intolerant? (This is based on a 2006 study and you can find the results here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17287558). For more information why you shouldn't take milk/dairy products, you can visit this website at http://www.nomilk.com
It's one thing to say that I stop taking dairy products and it's another thing to do it. That's because a lot of packaged/processed food in western countries have dairy products in them, not just the obvious ones like cakes, chocolates and ice cream. Biscuits, cereal, muffins, etc have them too. But my resolve was strong. So, I looked in the ingredients list for every packaged food before I buy. If there's one dairy ingredient in there, I'll skip it.
However, there's one food that I missed eating and that was ice cream. Ice cream is probably the single Western (if it's really Western) food that I missed. It wasn't so bad in the beginning, though, because I discovered strawberry smoothie and they are delicious, whether made by someone else or made by myself (of course, I have to make sure that it has no yogurt/milk in them). Later, I discovered sorbet, which helped too. By the way, fruit-based gelatos are sorbet. Sorbets are easier to find than dairy-free/vegan ice cream in supermarkets and many gelato sellers, like Inside Scoop, sell sorbets. I do not desire to eat sorbets except chocolate or coconut sorbets (you can find these two flavours in Inside Scoop). updated as of 17th January 2018
Anyway, I came back to Malaysia 11 years ago and then you couldn't get strawberry smoothie here and strawberries here weren't cheap either. So, I had to make do with sorbet occasionally for a number of years.
It was some years ago that I discovered that there's something known as non-dairy ice cream. Non-dairy ice creams are probably vegan ice creams too as they are suitable for vegans by not containing any dairy and eggs. The usual non-dairy/vegan brands are usually US brands like Soy Delicious and Tofutti that can't be found locally here in Malaysia but are available in our neighbouring country, Singapore. Since I went to Singapore once or twice a year in the past, I would be able to there and buy a tub because some retailers there import those US brands. Later, I would spend some time in Australia where it's also easier to get non-dairy ice cream as they have their local non-dairy ice cream brands and also imported US brands.
Anyway, back in Malaysia or specifically Klang Valley (I'm born and bred here), I've also been looking for non-dairy ice cream. And I've managed to find them over the years. The list is as follow:
