Hi all,

Being a non-dairy person for the last 13 years, I have been eating foods that do not have dairy products in them. Why did I decide to stop taking dairy products? Well, there was one time when I was overseas and I ate a lot of burritos with cheese in them and I got a breakout the next day. It had to be the cheese that I ate the day before, so I did some research on the Internet. Indeed, research have found that there's a link between acne problem and milk/dairy products. Milk is probably the most congesting food out there (unless you can find raw milk where the original enzymes and good bacteria are still intact).

So I decided from that day onwards that I'll not take dairy products anymore. (Later I also read an email that there's a link between cancer and dairy products too but that's another story). Non-dairy products are good for people with lacto-intolerance. Did you know that close to 90% of the Malaysian population are lactose-intolerant? (This is based on a 2006 study and you can find the results here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17287558). For more information why you shouldn't take milk/dairy products, you can visit this website at http://www.nomilk.com

It's one thing to say that I stop taking dairy products and it's another thing to do it. That's because a lot of packaged/processed food in western countries have dairy products in them, not just the obvious ones like cakes, chocolates and ice cream. Biscuits, cereal, muffins, etc have them too. But my resolve was strong. So, I looked in the ingredients list for every packaged food before I buy. If there's one dairy ingredient in there, I'll skip it.

However, there's one food that I missed eating and that was ice cream. Ice cream is probably the single Western (if it's really Western) food that I missed. It wasn't so bad in the beginning, though, because I discovered strawberry smoothie and they are delicious, whether made by someone else or made by myself (of course, I have to make sure that it has no yogurt/milk in them). Later, I discovered sorbet, which helped too. By the way, fruit-based gelatos are sorbet. Sorbets are easier to find than dairy-free/vegan ice cream in supermarkets and many gelato sellers, like Inside Scoop, sell sorbets. I do not desire to eat sorbets except chocolate or coconut sorbets (you can find these two flavours in Inside Scoop). updated as of 17th January 2018

Anyway, I came back to Malaysia 11 years ago and then you couldn't get strawberry smoothie here and strawberries here weren't cheap either. So, I had to make do with sorbet occasionally for a number of years.

It was some years ago that I discovered that there's something known as non-dairy ice cream. Non-dairy ice creams are probably vegan ice creams too as they are suitable for vegans by not containing any dairy and eggs. The usual non-dairy/vegan brands are usually US brands like Soy Delicious and Tofutti that can't be found locally here in Malaysia but are available in our neighbouring country, Singapore. Since I went to Singapore once or twice a year in the past, I would be able to there and buy a tub because some retailers there import those US brands. Later, I would spend some time in Australia where it's also easier to get non-dairy ice cream as they have their local non-dairy ice cream brands and also imported US brands.

Anyway, back in Malaysia or specifically Klang Valley (I'm born and bred here), I've also been looking for non-dairy ice cream. And I've managed to find them over the years. The list is as follow:

1) Ben & Jerry Non-Dairy Ice Cream in Cold Storage, Village Grocer and Jaya Grocer supermarkets - updated as of 17th January 2018

2) Lecka-lecka outlets (chocolate soy gelato)

4) Loving Cafe at No. 23, Jalan 13/149L, Sri Petaling (multiple flavours of hard-serve ice cream at double the price of what it used to be) - updated as of 17th January 2018

5) RGB & The Bean Hive (multiple flavours)

6) Honest Treat RawC™ stick ice cream available at La Juiceria outlets at 1Utama, Sri Hartamas, Mid Valley LG, Bangsar Shopping Centre, Berjaya Times Square, Nu Sentral and Goodness Greens Cafe TTDI.

7) Swedish Glace non-dairy frozen dessert - available at Village Grocer, 1 Mont Kiara Mall.

8) So Good from Sanitarium Australia (vanilla and chocolate) - updated as of 17th January 2018

9) Kind Kones (formerly known as Raisin' the Roof), Malaysia's first vegan ice cream bar. Three locations: Damansara Heights, 1 Mont Kiara Mall and Bangsar Village - updated as of 17th January 2018

10) LN Fortunate Coffee 100% vegan cafe in Solaris Mont Kiara (multiple flavours of hard serve ice cream) - updated as of 17th January 2018

11) Kelava coconut ice cream (multiple flavours) available at Sala in Desa Sri Hartamas and through delivery - updated as of 17th January 2018

Defunct Places All updated as of 17th January 2018

1) Woods Macrobiotics (they used to have sesame and red bean hard-serve ice cream is available but they have moved or closed down) updated as of 17th January 2018

2) Sangkaya coconut ice cream (their coconut ice cream is not dairy-free as they contain milk / condensed milk updated as of 17th January 2018

3) Nutty Coco coconut ice cream closed down at multiple locations

If there is anyone who knows or has discovered additional place(s) for non-dairy ice cream not mentioned in the list above, please let me know.

Thanks.

Thank you, UpCar, for your reply. I have checked and indeed Tutti Frutti have soy-based frozen yogurt that is non-dairy.

Too bad one can't find imported non-dairy ice cream here in Malaysia.

If anyone else have encountered other places with non-dairy ice cream, I would certainly appreciate your reply.

By the way, fruit based gelati are not sorbets. =)

Cheap ice cream in the tubs have mainly emulsifiers and hydrogenated vegetable fat. Look them up in supermarkets. I stay away from them like plague.

I respect your decision on going dairy-free. But IMHO, its oxymoronic to want to eat dairy-free ice cream. It's like eating vegetarian chicken.

Fruit-based gelato are sorbet. Those fruit-based gelato that you find in Gelatomio or Gelatissimo are all sorbet. If you say that they are not sorbet, then you should explain why.

Fact is not everyone can, want or should to eat meat, just like not everyone can, want or should eat dairy. Therefore, if someone can make a substitute that taste similar, then that's wonderful.

By the way, I just thought that I'll let everyone know the two places that you can get Singapore-made non-dairy ice cream. The two places are:

1) Brownice (vegan hard-serve ice cream)
Sin Ming Centre,
8 Sin Ming Road, #01-03,
Singapore 575628
Tel: 6456 6431
URL : www.brownice.com

2) Soyato (soy-based soft-serve ice cream with many flavours)
Soyato Frozen Soy Dessert
Bugis Junction #B1-K5
There are a few other outlets/kiosks selling Soyato in Singapore.

I would do a little research before making sweeping statements like that..

Gelato
The main difference between gelato and regular commercially produced ice cream is in the amount of air that is whipped into it.
Gelato has less air incorporated into it due to a lower churning speed, resulting in a denser texture and intense flavour. It can be made with or without dairy products. A fruit based gelato can contain dairy products, and is not a sorbet due to the different technique used in producing it (amount of air incorporated and presence of dairy products). Gelato can be started from various mixtures (custard base, fruit puree base, sugar syrup base).
By the way, my favourite of all time - fior di latte.

Sorbet
A frozen produce made from fruit purée and can include the flavorings of herbs and spices. It is then whipped to lighten its texture. Sorbet contains no dairy products.

Sherbet
Similar to sorbet, this is a fruit based product, but milk is added for creaminess.

Granita
Very similar to sorbet but granita is not whipped and ice crystals are allowed form. It has a more granular appearance, and a crunchy texture. Very easy to make at home without an ice cream machine, using a shallow stainless steel tray and a fork. Usually made with a sugar syrup base liquid.

Well, to each his/her own. I don't believe in vegetarian meat substitutes, dairy substitutes, non-alcoholic beer, non-pork hams, beef/turkey bacons, sparkling fruit juices bottled in champagne-like bottles.

If you can't/choose not to eat it, don't - in all its permutations.

Call me a snob/purist if you will. =)

By law in E.U and U.S, ice cream must contain minimum 10% milk fat, anything less is ice confectionery/desserts. Most ‘ice cream’ available locally use palm oil and contain hardly any dairy products. Hence, one need not search any further than 7-E or Giant for non-dairy ice cream.

To reduce large ice crystals in reduced fat ice cream, much sugar is added. One has to decide whether 15% milk fat or 35% sugar is more harmful.

I am not making a sweeping statement. I know that sorbet do not contain dairy products. Fruit-based gelato (as opposed to milk-based) do not contain dairy products. In fact, I can quote from wikipedia.

"Gelato is typically made with fresh fruit or other ingredients such as chocolate (pure chocolate, flakes, chips, etc.), nuts, small confections or cookies, or biscuits. Gelato made with water and without dairy ingredients is also known as sorbetto (also known as sorbet). Traditionally, milk based gelato originated in northern Italy, while the fruit and water based sorbetto came from the warmer parts of southern Italy."

wikipedia

It seems strange, maybe even uncalled for, that you would give your personal opinion that you don't believe in non-dairy foods in a thread that has to do with non-dairy food. It's like someone who doesn't believe in marriage going to a wedding forum and telling everyone that he doesn't believe in marriage. There's no need for that.

Well, I did say it was of my opinion. This is a public forum isn't it? If it did offend, I do regret.

And I also question the validity of such publicly amendable resource such as Wikipedia, when my knowledge of such topic is obtained first hand from master pastry chefs of Italian origin, in a reputable culinary school (read: Le Cordon Bleu).

Looks like one should resort to learning highly technical skills from wikipedia from now on. smile.gif

I'll tell my son to quit university.

To each, his own.

Substitute milk fat (e.g. in butter, chocolate and ice cream) with palm oil is pretentious food.

Most commonly available "ice cream" in Malaysia hardly contents any milk fat if any.

Sorry, I just noticed your message.

I saw a Jollybean kiosk in Sunway Pyramid recently but I don't remember seeing any ice cream in the menu. There was icy drinks, though.
