u need to consider the fastest network provider.
the things work like u want to copy data from pendrive to ur computer. u need the speed data transfer. same as build own server. u need to think the user enter ur website will copy data from ur server into their computer. so if u have the slow internet connection, ur website also slow loading data. when u have fast internet connection, need to know how many user per time enter ur server. smile.gif so far, malaysia internet very slow. i do not recommend u to build ur own server for ur website.

Webhosting will have to depend on your needs, in varies from different requirements. How large of contents hosted on your site, number of visitors, primary audience of your site, country they are entering from, etc, etc. Also have you even secured a domain name yet?

Host from home how come you guys suggest Exabytes and all those online hosting website? doh.gif

Install XAMPP, get a dynamic dns domain and you're good to go. It's free anyway. Good to explore around and get familiarize with those basic web hosting tools.

I used to host like you, host a forum at home. laugh.gif

Last time I used 1MB with crawling 384kbps upload speed. If accommodate more than 3 users already slow liao for my friends (You're not affected because technically you're visiting your own comp, so is fast).

PC requirement - last time I host with Pentium 4. Now time has changed. I guess any CPU above P4 is good enough. laugh.gif

Security? I think XAMPP will solve it for you. Also, who want to hack your website when you suka suka can switch on/off? laugh.gif

I mean I am worried my Windows 2003 server could be infected with viruses and malware. (I don't have an enterprise class firewall and doesn't want to pay antivirus fee every year)
Next, when i have free time, I wanted to try set up Linux (Fedora) webserver.
If this success, I will put the Fedora webserver online to host my own's website at home because Linux less likely to get infected.

If you host your own server at home for testing purpose, it's okay. However if host critical website or business, better forget your idea.

What's the point host at home while you can get real host for fairly cheap these days? Not to mention power and network outage, virus, etc if run your website at home.

For testing, use unifi with dedicated IP, low end or used computer CPU, linux OS and run your website like hell. biggrin.gif

EDIT: Give you couple links for reference:

because hosting a site at home is not feasible unless you have the good internet speed, skills and time.

for the internet speed, unless you can get yourself a BIZ 5 or above(VIP5 is kinda sluggish sometimes), then it "should" be okay(considering that your user are mostly malaysian or nearby malaysia). for the hardware part, I would say that most of our hardware would be more than enough(even with those pentium 3 or 4 computer still ok one, but of course if you have a dual core proc or better and higher ram, the better it would be)

for security maintenance part, if you don't have the skills, then better hire one for the job........ otherwise later you will sweat.gif doh.gif

I just manage to setup my own server at home to host my web site. i never plan to do this before, but after few years hosting with those hosting provider, bore with the service given if compare with the price.

If your traffic is very low, that's no point for you to host your server at home, u can get cheap hosting start from RM 80 per year, but after your traffic grown and hit the limit of the hosting, your account will be suspended.

I did upgraded my package to VPS (Virtual private server) but yet with the expensive fees, but very low spec of hosting. I pay around RM 1.5k per years for 100MBz CPU, 512MB of ram, 52kbps speed.

After about 9months hosting at this VPS, many problem occur and finally i decide to move it back to my home.

at the initial time when I move the web site back home, there are a lot of problem because this is my first time that setup a server to host the wordpress. But after few weeks of tuning and learning, it should be fine.

1 problem that I having now is becaue my rounter Dlink D-615 don't provide the function of DNS loopback, so I need to edit my hosts file to hardcode the domain name to be resolve using the local LAN IP.

I'm using unifi VIP 5 dynamic IP.

Can you help test out the speed and please do give some comment or suggestion.

it might fare well(my internet speed kinda slow for now so can't comment much), provided that you didn't online at your home though tongue.gif . But vip5's speed is not really consistent, I would suggest getting yourself a BIZ10 instead(or better) since the BIZ package is really faster than the VIP package(can apply for static ip so there will be less hassle on setups).

hehe, understand that BIZ plan always better than VIP package. but my problem is min setup cost. Even my "server" is actually an old PC with win 7 ultimate with IIS 7 installed.

BIZ 10 cost about RM 599, is far far away from my small small budget, will only decide to change if my traffic grow up

Do you have any idea or tools that can help in this? is that w3 total cache will help? or i need to manually edit the script in order to do that?
