From my experience, if the GP avoid the pellet, maybe it doesn't like the pellet taste. However, if your other GP likes them, you just ignore the other one. Eventually, when it starts to get hungry, it will just eat the pellet. My GP used to be like that but eventually he just started eat the pellets anyway.

For the running, it's normal as energetic and normal happy GP likes to run around the cage cuz of curiosity, unless if spooked or scared of a person approaching or sudden moves.

For mites, just go to vet for check-ups. Maybe go to petstores and ask some tips. One more option that I read on an online pet blog says that to get a white piece of paper and put your guinea pig on it and wipe the paper all over him, if you see black specks/bug like thing you need to get him to vet.

then i guess everything will be fine biggrin.gif wont put too much pellet for them 。。。

mites are too small to be noticed by us.. but u can check their butt, forehead and ears, usually mites will feed on their ears and forehead, if u see closely sometimes u will notice some black or brown dots on their fur..

if really seriously infected, their fur will drop, leaving the infected area empty, then u should really go to vet immediately

using hay as bedding is common practice in those western country but seldom have ppl do it in msia i guess (our hay is not cheap  tongue.gif ) coz u have to change those hay everyday otherwise those dirty hay will carry some germs tat might make ur gp sick..
*
will check on them later smile.gif

hi everyone! i'm new here...
thinking of having a guinea pig as a pet...
currently doing research and reading about gp to prepare myself.
i have a few questions though, i've tried asking in petshops but i'm not very satisfied with the answer given.

1. how much pellets should i give a gp a day? izzit ok to feed pellets in the morning and fruits/vege in the evening?
2. i've seen petshops selling the metal ball thingy to put hay inside (for rabbits), can i use that for gp as well?
3. can i toilet train my gp, as in only poo poo and pee pee at a certain corner in their cage?
4. about how much do i need to have a gp (comfortably) for the cage, bedding, toys, food, etc?
5. any other advice for a new gp owner?

What I've been doing this 5 years. Pellet for morning. Hay/Veges for night.

2. i've seen petshops selling the metal ball thingy to put hay inside (for rabbits), can i use that for gp as well?
You can. I just put all on the floor of their cage.

3. can i toilet train my gp, as in only poo poo and pee pee at a certain corner in their cage?
You can, but not all will be fully trained.

4. about how much do i need to have a gp (comfortably) for the cage, bedding, toys, food, etc?
Good, absorbent bedding. I am using Woody wooden pellets. Some uses the recycled paper thingy. If you can change their bed every night I would suggest fleece covers as bedding.

5. any other advice for a new gp owner?
Make sure you aint allergic. I have 5 before I was aware they make me having rashes on my body (hands apparently immune, just my body) and sinus problems. But I still keep them.

I refill whenever their bow is empty =X vege everynite (but sometimes finished d then dint feed them)

2. i've seen petshops selling the metal ball thingy to put hay inside (for rabbits), can i use that for gp as well?
u can use anything to hold the hay as long as they can eat it, the metal ball is not bad, was thinking to buy 1 too..

3. can i toilet train my gp, as in only poo poo and pee pee at a certain corner in their cage?
i tried to train them too but at the end gave up coz i upgraded their cage (see picture below)

4. about how much do i need to have a gp (comfortably) for the cage, bedding, toys, food, etc?
i make the cage myself, spent about RM50, could not rmb the exact amount.. feeding them Oxbow (RM50++)/1 n 1/2 month, hay about 1kg/month (RM10 - buy from dealer), vege just few ringgits and can eat for whole week. u can diy some toys for them too like making tunnels using water bottle, etc. My advice is dun waste $$ on running wheels.

bring them to vets for body check once in a while, each gp rm15  smile.gif

5. any other advice for a new gp owner?
they are easy to maintain and cute to have =)

i have a few questions though, i've tried asking in petshops but i'm not very satisfied with the answer given.

1. how much pellets should i give a gp a day? izzit ok to feed pellets in the morning and fruits/vege in the evening?
Morning once, Evening once. Fruits & vege as treats or side dish.

2. i've seen petshops selling the metal ball thingy to put hay inside (for rabbits), can i use that for gp as well?
Yeah, I'm using that. My GPs loves to roll it around the cage like football.

3. can i toilet train my gp, as in only poo poo and pee pee at a certain corner in their cage?
Yes. Usually GP will mark a corner for them to only pee, for poo they just do it everywhere but the poo is better than pee. (not stinky and wet)

4. about how much do i need to have a gp (comfortably) for the cage, bedding, toys, food, etc?
Oxbow the best brand for pellet (RM50++ a month), bedding (RM25-45) depends on type, otherwise use fleece or towel (check page 1), hays for munching (RM20++ a month), wooden toys or soft cardbox (tissue roll or Living World Big Tissue Roll) for teeth development. Never get the running wheel, as it only meant for hammies or hedgehog. Always consider big cage (DIY or incubator type, price depending). More space, more happy GP!

5. any other advice for a new gp owner?
GPs are the cutest pet ever, when you look at their face it's like they are smiling with fat cheeks on the side. Go for it if you have time to socialize and spend time with GP as they need a lot of attention from owners.

If I selling my guinea pig, will anyone buy it here? Sunway area.

sad.gif I'm so sad to sell it off but I have to move out to another condo and tons of assignment is pushing me. It's better let another owner take good care of it than making his life harder. Sometimes I even rush home to feed him due to my class finish at late time and he is squeaking for food when I back

Any hay as long as alfafa or timothy depending on GP's age is good. You might even find cheaper supplier that sells 1kg for RM10 timothy hay. Works the same as pet store's

I beg to differ. I wont say Genesis is the best. I have been using Oxbow for more than 3 years. I must say I am very satisfied with Oxbow.

Genesis price is almost the same as Oxbow in a way. I tried Genesis before but I dont see any different in my babies. Hence I stick to Oxbow. Not to mention they choose Oxbow over genesis smile.gif
