hi to all sifus,

im planning to change to vista 64 bit. so i would like recommendation or opinions or suggestions regarding my rams. [desperate unsure.gif ]

currently im running on 2x1GB of a-data 6400, 5-5-5-18 value rams (dual channel). should i consider getting another 2x1gb or 2x2gb. how much rams is enough for vista 64bit? my comp is normally used for gaming. since im doing mild oc i think 800mhz should be sufficient enough for me (intel e6750 oced to 3.2ghz; multiplier 400x8; fsb:ram = 1:1)

what would be more upgrade wise? more rams? or tighter timing rams? same modules? different modules? different timings? different clocks? different voltages etc. my friend tested rams at same frequency with different ram latency timings; 800mhz at 4-4-4-12 and 800mhz at 5-5-5-15, there isnt much differences in normal applications. benchmarks shows a slight increase in memory performance. so the problem now is what should i consider?

should i get the same module as my previous rams? (but there's no one selling adata value rams in garage sales thread!)
or
get different modules with different memory chips but same timings, (eg: other type of value rams at 800mhz 5-5-5-18)

get peformance rams at 800mhz but with tighter timings and downclock them, (eg: 4-4-4-12 but downclock to 5-5-5-18)

get 2x2gb so my comp would be running with one pair of 2gb and one pair of 1gb; adds up to 6gb. (but then i'll have to consider problems like timings and all)

stick to just new pairs of performance ram?

or???

couldnt make a decision here. can any of you sifus help me with this? which setup would be ok to me? note that im not a benchmark freak and i wouldnt mind a few marks drop. but which setup or configuration would be performance wise for me? and future wise too, seeing the fact that new OS is coming out next year too, which they claimed to utilize less ram.

to sum it up, should i use:
2x2gb and 1x1gb
4x1gb
2x2gb
or something else?

then, what bout the ram frequency and timings? here's my current rig's detail

silverstone st56f
intel e6750 400x8 @ 3.2ghz
2x1gb ddr2 a-data 800mhz 5-5-5-18 ram
gigabyte p35 ds3

many many many thanks in advance! currently very desperate to change os but undecided how or which shoould i upgrade my rams cry.gif

ok, so let's say i would just wanna use 4 gigs of rams, and i would like to buy new ones, which configuration would be better, or wiser?

2x2gb of cl4-800mhz (same modules) or 4x1gb cl4-800mhz (same modules)

and for the mild oc of my proc (400x8), which brands of rams would suit me best?

so far i see that the corsair xms2 dhx cl4 series prices were not bad, or does any of the sifus here got any opinion or recommendations? notworthy.gif

thanks! biggrin.gif

thanks for all the answers! smile.gif

i just ordered myself a g.skill pi black series cl4-900 4gb kit. hopefully it will suit my needs! (i could oc my proc abit more too when i get better cooling) thumbup.gif

my adata wasnt stable at cl4, yesterday i tested it at cl5 and it produce 1 or 2 errors too! blink.gif

anyway thank you all again!

okok. thanks. i did mention im Not going for extreme oc for my rig (unless of course i'v finally got the money to upgrade my cooling). plus i've already ordered a 7200 cl4 4g kit.

thanks for all the enlightments btw! notworthy.gif

And what is the possibility of a ram being faulty if it passed Memtest without any error? I ran mine for almost 24hours without any error. But still BSOD happens. Take out the ram and replaced with a new one and does not have BSOD anymore.

yup, i remembered lastime i tried to OC my rams; i could boot into windows and everything untill when i do heavy gaming, its proned to bsod. memtests of 1 hour shows no errors, 2 hours shows no errors. so i tried to leave it on and went to sleep. the next day memtest shows 2 errors. so sometimes maybe u'll have to stress it more to see if its stable or not.

ok, let's say i know about the bandwidth doubling when running in dual channel mode,

but my question now is, would it be significant in performance for a p4 system to run in dual channel mode?

my specs would be a p4 2.4ghz, 800mhz dd2 2gb dual-kit and 8600gt gpu.

all your answers would help me alot cuz i need to buy a mobo before cny.

please,

and thanks!

1 silly question, if i buy kingston value ram DDR-800 CL5, and OCZ DDR-800 CL5 also, no going to Overclock or tune the CL, the speed is running same ? or OCZ will faster ?

and compare CL4 and CL5 , how much % different ?

thankz.

for your first question, lets say both brands of rams do have same settings, volts and timings; and since ure not going to oc, they both will be the same.

well just my 2cents, in my experience at the same frequency, cl4 anc cl5 difference isnt really big. unless u want to talk about benchmarks, but i dont think the differrence would be very great to you to even notice it on normal usage.

but even if they both wer to be paired together, the 1067 speed will be lowered to 1066 to match with the 1066 ram.

haha ya, at the speed 1067, the 1 is really small. just a fraction of 0.001
