I'm looking to upgrade my T440p Thinkpad to 16GB (2x 8GB Sodimm DDR3L). I only use the laptop for work, where sometimes I have to run tests that use a lot of memory (my 2x4GB RAM now is not enough as it frequently maxed out).

My question is: should I get the cheapest 1600MHz RAM I could find for the upgrade (so far I found Crucial/Samsung/Hynix 8GB for RM95 from Shopee), or spend extra money on RAM with higher MHz (this laptop supports up to 2133Mhz) or lower CAS latency (e.g. HyperX Impact with CL9 latency)? Is spending extra on RAM worth it if you don't play games?

2666 mhz & 3600 mhz
class 16, 18, 19

what are the significant difference of them in term of processing power & gaming?

is it very noticeable during gaming?

is it high mhz ram really needed for gaming?
*
CL lower the better.
example 2400 mhz , cl 16 is about same performance as 2666 , cl 18 .

Lately i have been buying HyperX rams
earlier this year i got micron die .. was good performance. latency 60 ns.

last week i got latest stock and they use Hanya die . this one i test using userbench the latency so high about 90ns .

looks like hyperX ram getting not good ! for gamer s that was fast rams .

Ryzen loves higher clocked speed DDR4, especially APU since on board graphic uses shared DDR4(upto 4GB) from system RAM....

My R5-2400G system(B450) uses XPG Spectrix D40 DDR4-3200 8GBx2

XPG has newer D60G 3200... check it out

8gbx1 sufficient?
I learned from YouTube system won't go full 3200mhz. And 2400 and 3200 won't see different?

If brand no make different, then i take adata since it cheaper

That d60g so expensive. Not intend to o'clock...

Not sure which YouTube told you 2400 ram get similar results as 32000 ram.... lol

In the beginning my motherboard xmp profile auto set it to 2666, so I manually changed it to 3200(profile 2). It just work cinebench scrored higher in both processor and graphic side (YouTube have alot evidence)....

For your info, APU really need higher ram speed. It will give better system respond and another graphic too. If you don't intend to play overclock, then why don't get Intel instead, they got build-it graphic too (weaker than Ryzen)

Second both Intel and Ryzen system has a function called dual channel memory. It's your own choice you want buy 1 stick of ram.... 4GBx2 work better than one stick 8GB (YouTube have alot evidence)....

RAM overclock is base on chip. 2133mhz B-Die simply can reach 3600+

You need to load the xmp profile in your bios.

Does anyone know where to get low profile DDR4 3200MHz 32GB (16GB x 2) CAS 14 RAM like the Ripjaws V and Vengeance LPX?

Very hard to find low profile 3200 CL14 nowadays.
I got mine from Amazon, just hope it doesn't break till I'm really done with it. brows.gif

i am thinking want to get gskill ram, however, realized there are 2 type of latency.
because 3600mhz so many option and confusing, so i decide get 3200 instead.
i am using b450 aorus m mobo.

Trident Z Neo DDR4-3200MHz CL14-14-14-34 1.35V 16GB (2x8GB)
Trident Z Neo DDR4-3200MHz CL16-18-18-38 1.35V 16GB (2x8GB)

Trident Z Neo DDR4-3600MHz CL14-15-15-35 1.40V 16GB (2x8GB)
Trident Z Neo DDR4-3600MHz CL16-16-16-36 1.35V 16GB (2x8GB)
Trident Z Neo DDR4-3600MHz CL16-19-19-39 1.35V 16GB (2x8GB)
Trident Z Neo DDR4-3600MHz CL18-22-22-42 1.35V 16GB (2x8GB)

get the lowest possible timings (CAS Latency a.k.a. CL as you've seen in the names).
share if you do find one with lower timings icon_idea.gif because low latency RAM is scarce in malaysia. malaysian sellers usually get their hands on the worst possible timings.

3200mhz only have Cl16 shakehead.gif
what you say is true. its feels like not really worth get 3600, as all those timing are really bad. if want to OC, does it matter to use high timing which we can change its timing later on?
for example.. 3600mhz, Trident Z Neo DDR4-3600MHz CL18-22-22-42 1.35V 16GB (2x8GB)
enable xmp profile, then change it to CL14-15-15-35 with 1.5v ?

there's a very high chance the CL18 variant will fail even trying to OC to 16-16-16-36. failing means that it fails to fully boot.

follow up: i've managed to find and bought 3600MHz CL16-16-16-36 RAMs locally after almost 4 months. bought 2 sets, that makes it 4x8GB...and now I hope it runs fine on my system without issue because it's very expensive and I'm not so sure if the CPU can properly handle 4 sticks of RAM...
