Hi all,
just got my MBP 13" 2012 (3,699 model) last week, with a dual core i5 with 4G ram, performance wise definitely slower than my previous Dell inspiron quad-core i7 with 8GB, but think it's ok for me and still acceptable (dual core VS quad core maybe?)

Anyway, my macbook 13" hang almost everyday and I have to press power button to off & on again.

Could it due to insufficient RAM? My daily task is firefox + chrome (20-30 tabs), Mail, MAMP PRO, Coda 2, Keynote, Trillian, MS messenger, Evernote, Dropbox.

Is 4GB ram + an i5 dual core enough to fit all the purpose I mentioned? I'm thinking to get 2 x 4GB 1600 DDR3 ram to upgrade, anyone has any recommendation which brand/model is compatible with this macbook pro?

Appreciate if any comment/suggestion!

The problem is probably caused by RAM capability and hard disk. It has nothing to do with processor unless you launch applications which utilize multicore processing.

You can check your RAM usage in activity monitor. 8GB RAM should solve your problem. A SSD allows your computer to launch applications, boot, shut down, file transfer faster.

Btw, folks, I'm gonna to get a MBP 15" next week. I currently use a MBP 15" 2.4 Ghz late 2011 model with 8Gb DDR3 1333mhz in my office. I find out that 8GB is not enough for me because I run virtual machine,.photoshop, and other software development tools. I have 2 questions:

1. I am no longer a student as I graduated on January. Can I purchase MBPRD from Apple Online Store using my cousin student id and change mailing address to my home address? Do I need to show my cousin supporting document during collection?

2. I went to EpiCenter (Apple Premium Reseller in SG) twice. To my surprise, Singapore doesn't have stock for MBPRD. I wonder why Machine and other Premium Reseller in MY have stock for MBPRD. I probably will go to KL on next Saturday, which outlets have display model?

Thanks in advance

I see. saw in Garage Sales are selling Kingston HyperX ram and bla, 've Pm-ed the seller but does it necessary to get a 1600 Mhz 1? MBP 2012 has come withs 1600MHz.

Any idea roughly how much a 2x8GB will cost? I'm not quite sure how to differentiate desktop ram or laptop ram in Garage Sales. forgive my foolish.  sad.gif

SODDIM - Notebook RAM
DDIM -.Desktop RAM

1333mhz - prior 2012
1600 mhz - 2012 model

Anyone could answer my questions in my previous post?

Hi guys, is the estimated delivery date accurate?

For example, if the Apple Online Store states 2 weeks delivery period. Will it takes longer than estimated delivery date.

How long it usually take to deliver a CTO MBP RD (based model)?

Thank you.

Never later than the estimated date, with potential chance of getting it earlier than the stipulated date.

The "how long"  is when you added to cart, and click the "get delivery date" link.

Thanks mate. smile.gif

I tried MBP RD in Multimedia Integrated (MI) SG yesterday. Unlike numerous complaints about retina display from other people, I find out that screen resolution and text size proportion are excellent except scrolling in Google Chrome. Tested application: Chrome, Safari, Eclipse IDE

What I concern is heat dispersion since MBP RD is thinner. Can MBP RD owners elaborate more information about heat dispersion in MBP RD?

Does anyone know whether Machine, and other Apple Premium Resellers in Klang Valley have stock for MBP RD display model (2.3Ghz)?

If so, I will travel to KL tomorrow morning. Fast response will be great.

Thank you.

May I know average battery life per full charge on MBPRD? Let's say heavy web browsing, 80% screen brightness, etc

Since the screen consumes more cpu and gpu usages, does it affect battery life? How is the battery life of MBPRD compared to normal MBP?

Yup, I agree with you.

When we purchase a Macbook Pro, we have to pay a premium for it....to many, the money is well spent for the OS, specs and branding, but some may disagree though...  sweat.gif

For example, I'm eyeing the Macbook Pro RD with 512GB SSD and 16GB RAM costing about RM9000+.....and you can hardly find a similar Windows based notebook out there costing RM9000+....

When Macbook Pro RD costs RM9000, people will still buy. If Windows Notebook cost RM9000, I wonder how many people will buy?....just a thought  blush.gif

I will buy.

Thinkpad W530 costs $3699 SGD (RM 9100) with following spec:

2.6 Ghz ivy bridge
8GB RAM
500GB Hitachi 7200rpm
Nvidia Quattro K2000m

The price reaches RM11k if you upgrade ram to 16gb and ssd. Thinkpad is a very reliable notebook. It is widely used in engineering fields. W700 costs RM17k when it was released 3 years ago. Those who purchased the notebook are from large enterprise. NASA crews are using IBM Thinkpad for years.

Don't argue with me as I use Thinkpad, Alienware, MBP, Latitude before. MBP is easy to use with the assistance of command key, apple script, multi-touch trackpad. It is vulnerable. My mbp broke down twice in 6 months.

Mind telling what was the cause of the 2 breakdowns of your MBP? and which MBP model was it? Thanks

Cause: connector between mainboard and hdd socket malfunction

MBP 13" 2011 model. I sold it two months ago.

I order a MBPRD. The parcel will reaches my house in these few days. Thinkpad and MBP are good machine. The build quality and ease of use are unbeatable

Did they just repair the connector or gave you a whole new motherboard? It seems that the diagnosis process by Apple is really professional being able to pinpoint the fault.

They replaced the connector. Customer service is excellent. But, seriously, some of them are lack of technical knowledge

Apple designers and engineers are clever. Some components in MBP are pluggable , removable.

receive my mbp last night. so far so good

I notice that remaining battery life status is not configurable, in other words, percentage and battery icon only. The remaining time in hours and minutes format is removed from MBPRD

Does anyone here know to enable this?

Yeah. I was unable to install MySQL Workbench because of this reason.

I notice that the text is not clear (a bit blur) in almost all applications except preinstalled Mac OS X applications. Anyone face this issue?

this is because not all Apps are supported in Retina Resolution

Honestly, a bit regret of getting retina display because of this issue. I use code and text editor most of my time. The text is not as clear as normal MBP. Do you know how to make it better?

Apple's text editor?
that should be Retina-fied already
*
Eclipse, Zend Studio, Flash Professional (AS3), Visual Studio, etc

All the text are blur including chrome.

Layout of some applications are correct. But, it doesn't invoke/perform correct task which it supposes to do. Ie, when I click certain buttons, nothing happens.

I google the issue just now. I found a solution. => http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=65607

For those who find that functions/features of your applications do not function properly. You have to open the application in "Low Resolution" setting. To do this, click cmd+i, click the "Open in Low Resolution" checkbox.

Should we have a thread listing useful software which is optimized for MBPRD? It will be great if we have a list of useful on the first page. If we do so, we will have a complete list of application in well-organized way.

Eg:
Video Player
- .... [optimized for Retina Display]
- ....

Audio Player
- ... [optimized for Retina Display]
- ....
- ....

Word Processing Applications
- ....
- ....
- ....

Video Streaming Applications
- .....
- .....
- ......

and so on

Just share some useful information with you guys.

Note: If you are a Eclipse, Aptana, Zend Studio, and other code editing applications user, please take note. It generally solve your problem.

If the text of your running application is not clear (ie, blur), first, you check the checkbox "Open in Low Resolution". You have to launch it in high resolution. If the checkbox is ticked, and you are unable to uncheck the checkbox, you need to change the configuration in the Info.plist. checkout the link => http://goo.gl/F2Idh

I believe Adobe Flash, Dreamweaver, and other text-related editing applications work in the same way.

2nd weird situation:=> if your application doesn't response when you click certain button, drop down menu, ie, it doesn't work. You need to launch it in Low Resolution in the info window (cmd +i).

Well I think only Xcode is the only IDE that supports Retina.
*
Yeah.

I don't care Retina or normal resolution as long as text is clear (and more space room of course). In my opinion, the main factor most people purchase MBPRD: weight, dimension (height), more value for money (SSD), better speaker, HDMI port instead of retina screen. Honestly, 1680 X 1050 anti-glare screen serves me well.
