why cannot use ADSL MODEM ROUTER? from the guide i see as long as the router has a WAN port and supports PPPoE with vlan tagging it should be ok right?

correct me if I am wrong.

thanks

You're half right, not all ADSL modem router has WAN port. Maxis's provided router does support both, but if you buy the cheap normal routers out there in the shop, most if not all are either router only or adsl/router (which will work on ADSL only) .

I am actually using a streamyx currently with a w8970 adsl modem router now. too bad it doesnt have a vlan tagging.

i am thinking how to re-use back this. since i cant replace the thomson, can i attache the w8970 to the thomson instead? use the thomson to dial the connection but my router to do the routing?

Same... using W8970 and changing to Maxis in this saturday too... can't really replace or cut down the devices. headache.

anyway, if you want to do most of the routing on the w8970, you can. simply do in such a way

maxis modem -> thomson (PPPoE dialup on WAN, LAN IP 192.168.1.1) -> W8970 (WAN 192.168.1.2, LAN 192.168.2.1) -> Wireless, Wired LAN

Guys, I have a WR841ND and Maxis IPTV with Astro. I have tried everything, installing OpenWRT and trying the vlan ID. Everything. The modem is provided by TM and the model is Huawei HG8240w. Can any sifus here help me in setting up the router to replace the stock bullshit Technicolour. Thanks!

If I'm not wrong, once Astro is there, the Technicolour router needs to be present.

I thought that the Astro Vlan ID is 823? So, I think that I can replace the router completely. I am getting crap speeds unless I restart the modem. At best 3Mbps, and after restart I get 9 at best.

Does anyone using SME maxis plan?

My current setup is WDR4300 + echolife hg8240.

But i've lost the VOIP function.

I've been trying all the methods listed in this thread, but none was working, even tried to setup SIPdroid in my phone, i'm unable to connect too.

Maybe someone could enlighten me on this.

I just want to get the VOIP work, either through the HG8240. or thru an software VOIP.

Mind that package i signed up was for SME, so the settings might be different.

There is a lot of work and hassle to be done if you want to register your VoIP on your ONT and it may not be compatible with Maxis settings as well and not to mention the settings will be erased every time you power cycle the device.

If following the instructions from MystiqueLife and you still cannot get VOIP connection via SIPdroid, perhaps there's something different about the SME Maxis plan or that the SME plan disallows it.

Anyway, to get VOIP using 3rd party modem without using Technicolor modem, you need to hack the HG8240 so that it can support Maxis VOIP.

Have you checked this HG850a thread to see if it's anything similar to HG8240?

No idea on the HG8240 but if yours is the Huawei HG850a, it's possible. See link below;

Changes to it will be permanent.

This works on Maxis with VOIP functioning on the DIR615? Interesting.

But it's still a crappy modem. sweat.gif

I am not using the VoIP features and hence only use DIR615 for internet purposes... :-)

So I gave up trying to connect my voip direct from my Fibrehome ONU as nobody here seems to know how. Instead, bought a Mikrotik to be the modem and put the Thomson downstream for voip duties only. You see, in my house I need a fixed line phone.

But the stupid Thomson is still so unreliable even in this reduced role, hanging every day or 2. So what to do, I bought an Obihai 200 and connected that to the Mikrotik instead. Now, happy days, no more Thomson issues...

Is your ONU a Huawei HG850a?

He mentioned Fiberhome which is AN5506-04A/AN5506-04B.

Apparently, to configure the Fiberhome ONU you need the console to USB with the correct username and password. I forgot what was it and it is in command prompt based, can't configure VoIP anyways.
