I don't think it's sufficient. You can't find out about the functionality of your mic unless you have some friends around.

Only nearby player can hear your chatter via mic. To turn use voice chat press and hold Caps Lock, and double Caps Lock means turn on the mic indefinitely until turn off again (double caps lock again).

In order to remain hidden I suggest you to chat via Steam chat or other chat programs while turn off in-game voice chat. You won't wanna blow your position while sneaking around somewhere to some bandits.

i see. cause i dont really have a fully functioning mic right now, so i think it will be quite a hassle for me to play with anyone of whom is willing to play with me.

just installed CO and playing dayz.... when and where do you guys usually play? and is there no global chat anymore? don't see anyone talking...
