No one can tell you worth or not, if you or your family/friends really like to swim in the house with very high privacy of cause it's worth for it. If not, spending RM50-100k with extra few k for maintenance every year just for maybe few hours of usage per week. 99% will tell you not worth for money.

Of cause, it's your house and money. You think you like it, then just do it. smile.gif

My 2 cent.

Maintenance is the issue.
Every month, u need the fellas to come to service the pump & clean/vacuum the pool. Prices range from RM500-1000.
Plus chemical which u need to put into the water every few days.
Electricity & water bill as well.........

scorgio, maintenance sounds troublesome to me. Is that why most private swimming pools end up empty and not being filled with water? i checked on some people, they even said if that happens, it can be a good breading ground for mosquitoes since malaysia often rains

Go to Bukit Puchong and check out Aqua and Reflexion show houses. It gives you an idea of a private pool and if you want it.

How big is your house/land area? Do you want to put it on your rooftop or in your garden?

My friend told me that a swimming pool adds Rm100k valuation to a house.

For me, expectation is important. You can't have a decent swimming (!) pool at your own home, unless you are a big tycoon. Those so-called private swimming pool are just wading pool, you can only dip in it, nothing else, one kick you will reach the other end or have your head knock on the wall. If you have the right expectation, by all mean, go to own it.

A swimming pool need constant maintenance to keep it on tip top situation.
Problem like fungal, algae, dirty water, dirt/sand inside the pool etc.
Need to constant maintain chlorine level.

A proper maintain swimming pool shouldn't be a mosquito breeding ground, because the water got chlorine and water is constantly circulating all the time.

Added on June 12, 2012, 4:21 pmIt is not about worth or not worth, if one is not hiring outsiders or those professional swimming pool company to maintain, it can be a tedious job just to maintain it if doing on oneself.

It is not like you build/buy a pool, fill in water then can forget about it already.

cherroy, what I meant was that if the pool has no water in it, then you have rainy weather, the stagnant water may help to breed mosquitoes. Yup if the water keeps on circulating and with proper maintenance, it should be ok, right? I think I need to survey first on this. A lot of people discouraged me
because of the maintenance and underutilized facility.

A swimming pool is the luxury water features :-) if for showing off purpose is ok. If you have a big family than can consider. You also need to invest on safety. You don't want to are a body floating in your swimming pool next morning.

As long you have the money and afford to maintain it, just follow your heart.

if you want a cheaper version, you can google up portable swimming pool..

www.poolnleisure.com .. as cheap as 10k, you have yourself a full scale swimming pool with low maintenance... i'm opting this pool for my house... waiting for the keys before proceeding...

swimming pool maintenance shall be around rm300++/ month, for pool size of 3.5m x 15m x 1.2m, 10times / month. plus elec bill +- rm250, water +-rm50. *real figure as i still maintaining few pools for my previous project for 12 months*

For TS land size, the pool sure will be smaller unless he sacrifice the ground floor built up area

ok some first hand experience:

1. usage: in the beginning you use the pool a lot (almost every day) but it slows down until eventually you ask yourself why do i maintain the water. nobody swam this week. of course your mileage might vary

2. maintenance: not so much of a hassle for a small pool such as 4m x 8m. ideally you buy a cover so you can protect the pool from attracting leaves and such.
if chlorine pool: every two/three days have to add in chlorine, monitor water quality blah blah. tideous. if you engage a company they use way to much chlorine to be on the safe side. but in fact they know next to nothing about ph-levels and such. better you handle yourself and get a good testing kit. if properly maintained and pumped you will not have any cleaning issues. if you let it slide you*re in trouble.

if you choose salt water pool it's less hassle ( a friend of mine has one). just fish the leaves if no cover and you're good. but you need special pump that can tahan the salt water. no corrosion issues on nearby metal so i gues no other issues.

3. cost: if you have access to an alternative pool a small pool is not worth the money. for example we found that we much rather go to PJ palms and pay 5 bucks per person. its way larger and you get to keep your garden. also you dont have to bother about maintenance. even if you go to a nearby hotel pool once a week its cheaper. do the maths: 50k for a small pool : forgone interest at 3% = 1500 RM p.a. entrance to a hotel pool around 20 bucks per person (multiply by 4) = 80 bucks. already can go 18 times. then add the maintenance, water and electrictiy cost (easily 100 bucks on top per month) so you end up with 34 trips to a nice pool. thats more than every two weeks.

that of course ignores maintenance costs on the pool wich tips it further down.

i did some digging on the pro's and cons of portable pools.. especially from intex.

pro: cheaper, low maintenance. in terms of repair wise, far cheaper if u accidentally poke the pool wall.. btw, its made out of thick double layer canvas/pvc ..

cons : the water level is same for the whole stretch.. 4 feet.., its made out of canvas/pvc.. conventional pool are either from fibre glass or tiles..

try and visit the show house located beside lrt kelana jaya...

they have a lot of beautiful design to cover up the pool..

the cost is around 6k for 18x9x4 feet... plus the wet work ie digging, design you can put a side around 5-6k ...

as i'm a bit on the tight budget, i'm opting for this kind of pool.. cheaper but fit the purpose..and if in 10 years time you decide not to have a pool anymore, since its portable, you can just remove it and do something else at your land plot.. thumbup.gif

the cost is a bit expensive if you dig a hole for the pool, but the cost is cheaper if you place the pool off ground..

i think for safety wise, better go for stage type. dig type quite dangerous even though you have barriers. kids nowadays like to panjat2. my colleague's son drowned in a swimming pool a month ago due to negligence. for those with swimming pool, please be alert of your children. My colleague is a totally different person now after that incident. I pity him very much

This is just a slightly water storage tank, cannot classified as pool. Multiply by the factor of 10 can consider a pool.

Just don't get carried away with having a pool to impress others. Assess your own interest and know how often you would jump in. If you're only going into the pool once a month, I probably would say don't bother. At least on weekends to make it worthwhile. But hey, it's your money. As long as you've got the space for it and maintain it properly, it should be fine. There are canvas pool covers if you are concerned with breeding mosquitoes, manual and automated.

A very interesting topic this is. smile.gif
A private pool at home is a dream of many I presume. Not at all because of it gives you a thing to impress the others , but the special chemistry most people have towards clear blue water and the unique factor it adds to make the home even more "home". smile.gif
Not to mention it also gives you a chilly place to dip in and a place to work out a little smile.gif

Now, out of dream and back in reality, it's where and when we consider several factors before giving your yard a facelift.

Perhaps it's not that hard a decision to make.
The 1st question on the list, which is also the stumbling block is definitely cost. When you're sure of a proper financial planning that you'd plan to build and run a pool won't make your life harder, then I don't see what should stop you:)

2ndly, practicality. Would we still be utilizing it after several years? you may think you would, but no one knows even you yourself wouldn't know. So... when everything is within your power to build and maintain it, practicality doesn't really matter anymore.

I, too disagree on the statement "if u have to ask, u probably couldn't afford it ".
Doing research like this one is wise. It's the best thing to do to gather information before purchasing anything.

well, I don't have one at home, yet. But it's a childhood dream to have a pool at the backyard. So if you love something, by all means go get it. Life is short afterall:)

they made a huge fish pond in between
by time they finish it, the kids request to fill up water so they can swim for a while before converting to a pond

A few things you should consider - either liner or cement/mosaics based. Water in the pool tend to get acidic over time, and if the pH is low, it can eat into the cement lining the mosaics, and after a few years, your feet may start to feel the sharp edges of the mosaics, earlier if the mosaics were laid properly in the first place. Personally i prefer the liner type of pool, less slippery, kinder to the soles, and less maintenance.

You can do your own maintenance, or if you have a gardener or maid, teach them how to vacuum the pool. Generally if your pool is located in treeless area, you have less maintenance to do. If your neighbour loves open burning, then you r in trouble.

Go for it, maintenance is not as bad as u think.

bro, just a question. liner sounds better based on my findings even though we wont have the shining effect from the mosaic. i also found out that for liner, it is easier to fix if u have some damage to pool. it is cheaper as an overall too. how much do you pay for your pool bro? please share.

You are right, easier to fix leaking if using liner, and you dont need heavy concreting as base. 10mx3mx1.2m should be around 90k, 12mx3mx1.2m around 110k, 18mx3mx1.2m around 140k, just to give you an idea.

Do note that pools is a hazardous to small children. Lots of kids drown because they fell into pools. Have to install some sort of fencing.

A bigger/lap pool is only 'worth' it if you have children or frequently entertain people at home. But then again, worth is a relative term. If it's just you and your woman, a smaller sized jacuzzi would do the trick just as fine, if not better. You get seats and jets and hot water. You won't be needing all the extra space and water anyway. wink.gif

Hi Amint,
If you are willing to invest those amounts in swimming pool construction then it will be worth for you. Please note that you will need to spend additional money in swimming pool maintenance. Swimming pool will increase the look and feel of your outdoor living. If you are a regular swimmer then it is better to have your own swimming pool rather than using the one in your friend's home. I have my own swimming pool which I built 6 years ago and it stills looking good. The maintenance services are done by Ferrari pools every year and totally it is really worth for me.

Never leave your pool go empty or dirty and became stagnant...it is a very bad feng shui...my friend...even though they hardly swims...still keep the pool clean and running all year long...

Having a swimming pool in house is not an issue but its maintenance is a great issue. The average cost of a 19' diameter above ground swimming pool is $6,243; while the average cost of a 32'x16' inground swimming pool is $21,919. A swimming pool needs its maintenance atleast once in a week. The cost of Swimming Pool Maintenance is usually minimal. The time it takes to take care of a pool is more of the issue; especially if it isn't screened and you have a lot of trees. You can get decent service for about $50 a month or self maintain for less.

Amint, this should be your only concern. Safety! Especially for kids.
If the above is not an issue. You shall just do it.

i wonder, can we just drain out all the water when not in use and then just let it dry?
no? not possible?
or its defeat the purpose of having swimming pool?

I have a pool and it's one of the best decisions I've made for my family. We spend more time together and now instead of going out, the kids bring their friends over. Construction of a freeform pool is expensive but if you have the budget, It's worth it! There are also other options like fiberglass or liner pools which are cheaper. I know Classic Above Ground Pools in Malaysia offer DIY portable pools. Not sure about maintenance but it shouldn't cost so much.

My pool was done by Aquarius Swimming Pools, they were highly recommended to me and I would do the same too. Super easy to work with smile.gif

Yeah, you know as they say," If you have to ask, you probably couldn't afford it". But I dont really agree. You need to ask to be able to know whether you could afford or not.

Do not be discourage comrade.

For 5500sq ft house you can actually built a decent size pool. Keep it small to reduce maintenance charges (as you can do it yourself) You can use it primarily as a wading pool, to soak in on hot days at the same time you can install a swim jet for swimming excercise. It'w will fit these criterias:
1) Cooling down on hot days with a drink in hand
2) Reasonable installation price (25k-40k depending on size)
3) Can do self maintenance
4) Can also use for swimming excercise with a swim jet (prolly cost anothe 5k-10k)

Trust me as i have done it before not talk only like many others..... wink.gif cheers.

Has anyone tried cheaper above ground pools like intex? The lifecycle of one I'm sure is much more limited, but considering the price difference from getting something built, would it be worth it?
