It's funny that Sony, canon,Nikon can't give us what the xz1 has, f1.8-2.5. It's tempting this rx100. Gives s100 some competition. I'm waiting for the xz2 so in the meantime, I'll give the rx100 a pass.

now there are more reviews and sample pics from this rx100.
what do you guys think about this rx100?
bigger sensor, able to shoot high ISO in low light vs oly xz1's f1.8-2.5?

In a way.. it's a Nikon 1 with better controls and faster lens.

Err.... Are you referring to the Samsung?

Samsung has entered the game with a Schneider-Kreuznach f1.4 lens's EX2F.

Let's compare the lenses,

RX100's Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar f1.8-4.9 28-100mm
EX2F's Schneider-Kreuznach f1.4~  24-80mm
Olympus's M.Zuiko f1.8-2.9 28-115mm

XZ-1 has the "all time brighter" which Samsung's EX2F will be the brightest and widest with f1.4 and 24mm SWA. With this combo, low-light landscape will be much easier.

RX100 might have the best "branded" lens since it's from Zeiss. Most of you know that "Sonnar" means "bright" and represents large aperture. But definitely not the brightest in telephoto.

I believe EX2F will "theoritically" give the best optical performance with that focal length, less zoom ratio, better image quality, I guess. Schneider-Krueznach from German, almost as famous as Carl Zeiss, I wonder how both of the German glasses perform.

XZ-1's M.Zuiko lens is very sharp even wide open. I own XZ-1 and was impressed at the first sight after some comparison with my Sony Alpha. It was until I replaced my kit lens with a better prime lens, XZ-1 performed nearly identical (if not better) than my kit lens. The focal length and the aperture are very convenient. I meant, where else you could get telephoto-end with f2.9?

I hope RX100 could perform better in low-light with its larger sensor. With enough ambient light, Carl-Zeiss will not disappoint us with its T* coating, but I wonder how about low-light.

S100 and LX5? Come out with something near to the 3 mentioned models, then only we talk.

The Samsung comes with the 'grip'... Looks like its more ergonomic compared with the oly, Sony, canon, panny. And also the tilt screen, which would be great for self or couple portraits.

X10 is nice but still doubts about the orb issue and menu system a bit clunky.. and big.
Not really.. no doubt that on paper, the f1.4 lens trumps all the current enthuasiast compacts using the same 1/1.7 inch sensor but after using S90 and XZ-1, got urge for bigger sensor di.
Kinda hope XZ-2 will be an even bigger revolution since Oly is in bed with Sony now according to the rumors.

so if xz 2 does not come with a bigger sensor, the rx 100 will be on top of your list?

am i correct to say (IMHO) that a bigger sensor is what i should look for in a high end compact? f1.8+larger sensor=better bokeh?

second criteria will be the wide aperture for low light pics?

If XZ2 don't come with bigger sensor, I just stick to XZ1 lo.

This has nothing to do with bokeh la... even RX100 sensor is too small for useful bokeh.

Larger sensor = cleaner low and high ISO shots, dynamic range and what not. The faster lens serves to offset the disadvantage of smaller sensor against bigger ones on dslrs lo.

not really.. this is a camera not to replace dslrs but to act as a very very capable 2nd camera which is also pocket-able at the same time

actually, i'm one of those who will be putting down my dslr ( maybe for a period of time...) and going to a high end compact. so i'll be replacing my dslr with either the successor to xz1/s100 or the rx100. i'm still waiting for the others to show up first.
