I sent in my Notebook for service in the afternoon, but unfortunately it can start again sad.gif

It is very difficult for me to prove this problem to them sad.gif

Besides, I was told that we only entitled for 1 year of warranty. But all the ads on every single sites / newspaper says that there are two.

They want me to produce the receipt shows that there are two years warranty. But the seller never write that in the receipt sad.gif

WHAT CAN I DO NOW sad.gif

you can send email to them about this. Do take note to keep your original receipt as they might ask for it for verification purpose when sending your machine to the service center.

Is your copy of Windows genuine? if yes, try using the Microsoft Fix it tool to repair it. If no, buy the original Windows.

probably it would be cheaper a bit.. maybe up to rm100... but for me, who cares.. already bought mine at cheaper price.. not RRP price.. this machine is a good bargain.. it's already a good deal.. personally, i do prefer the current grey colour instead of white..

btw, anyone planning on buying the white ver?

Anyone seen photos/pics of the new white Y580? Not sure if i should get the new white model or the old grey model and upgrade it to Win8Pro... hmm.gif
*
i think the old grey dawn model should come with win 8 for new stock.. wait for the white model to come out then decide which one should you get.. or if you had more budget can consider to get Y500. come with ultra bay slot which can be replace with additional graphic, hard disk or fan.

I just got the Y480 and it seems that when I cold boot, the system becomes slow for a bit after logging in. After a while, everything becomes smooth.

My boot time is about 150 seconds i think.

Is that normal?
*
it's not normal should be under 60 sec. have you install all the drivers?

I restarted a few more times and it seems that it has sped up (57 secs). I also noticed that as soon as the Intel RST tray icon turns green, the computer becomes more responsive.

Currently the only problem I have is the Fn keys icons are not showing up on screen when I use them (volume up/down, brightness up/down, etc.). How do I fix this?

Thanks

edit: I bought the free dos version of the Y480. I might have missed out a few important installations but I installed most of the drivers that were in the CD. How do you guys get boot times of 30-40 secs? Mine averages at 55-60
*
can you share what OS are u using? what software have you been installed? have you check you start-up program? have you run the optimization software?

This is so frustrating as my bootup is now around 2-3min... T.T

of course cannot. unless u have a newly bought computer (not customized pc) then you can register to get the promo code.

QUOTE(dennis_lcfx @ Oct 28 2012, 04:28 PM)
I installed it but I disabled it from startup. I will try enabling it again.

Edit: turns out I did in fact disable both the energy management and utility.exe, thanks for the suggestion!
I am using Windows 7 Pro 64bit. The software that I installed are nothing much, just word processing, system tools and one game. I try to minimise the amount of start up programs by disabling those that I think are not needed. Which optimization software are you talking about?
*
the optimization software is Lenovo EE Boot Optimizer.

QUOTE(dennis_lcfx @ Oct 28 2012, 06:45 PM)
As for the warranty, does it last for 2 years or 1 year? I checked my s/n on the site and it showed that my warranty lasts til next year but not a full year (about 250+ more days).
*
for y480/y580 bought in malaysia is entitled for 2 years international warranty service. how long since you have bought your machine? probably your machine is pre-activated by dealer. you can register for base warranty at lenovo website. my y580 also has been pre-activated but after register at lenovo website, they update the warranty to the day that i bought it.

QUOTE(tcnguang84 @ Oct 28 2012, 10:34 PM)

not yet. still on win7. i was just coming back home. no time to install it yet. probably tomorrow as i need to backup some files and prepare for the drivers first.

worse case, key will be blacklisted by microsoft. but doubt if they would do that.

actually got what noticeable difference if i swap my current hdd of y480 with ssd? bcoz i thinking to buy a external hdd, so thinking if i swap my current hdd of y480 to ssd, then i can use the hdd inside as external hdd for storage use d..
*
you can buy new SSD and put it into your y480 hard disk bay. take out the current hard disk and just buy external hdd casing to make it external hdd. use your SSD for OS and frequently use application. once you go with SSD you will never want to go back with hdd.

QUOTE(shrxme @ Oct 29 2012, 10:42 AM)
hi everybody!
i'm quite interested to buy lenovo y580.  rclxms.gif
but after reading several problems occurred with this superb laptop in this thread, i'm quite worried with it.i'm afraid that i will face this problem too. sad.gif

so, i wanna ask an opinion from everybody, is it worth to buy this laptop?
how about the hardware?
can u suggest which one is better, y580 or y500?
and if i wanna buy y580, should i buy the dark grey or the new white version?

sorry if i ask a lot. because i wanna buy a laptop that can last longer and just have a minor problem with the hardware, etc .  sweat.gif
*
can you describe the several problems on this Y580 machine? i don't see any problem with the Y580 and mine has no problem at all. i think most of the problem is OS/application related not the machine problem itself.

dawn grey or white? it's up to you. it just colour different. choose which one suit you. spec are same. white colour comes with win 8. not sure when the grey colour will comes with win 8.

y580 or y500? have you checkout the spec between these two laptop? y500 definitely has higher price tag. expect around 4k for y500 although the lowest spec option might be cheaper. y500 is not out yet therefore we cannot suggest to you. but i think y500 would be better provide if you install additional GPU. buying y580 is really worth it as you get mighty beast at lower price. people who buy y580 has no regret after bought this machine.

can a normal 15.6" backpack fits this y580 ?
because the dimension for the y580 seems to be bigger than most of the 15.6" backpack
and u2 or u3 for this y580 ?
thanks...

not using backpack currently but using u3 for y580. u2 to small for y580 but ok for y480.

Have you check the driver version? is it for 32bit or 64bit? try to use the WHQL driver if still not working.

For those who are using Win 8 Pro 64 bit on Y580, do you have any issue with wifi connectivity? Mine seem not working at full speed when downloading but no problem in uploading. and sometime the connection is lost intermittently. Can share with me which wifi driver do you guys use? Thanks.

I have tested the WIFI driver from Lenovo China and it's not 100% working for Broadcom adapter. It can work but you will not satisfied with it. sometimes will face intermittent connection and will not get full speed when downloading. So far haven't found the best wifi driver yet for Win 8 Pro 64 bit.

@shrxme, can post some pic of your backpack?

QUOTE(Jaez @ Nov 14 2012, 11:24 AM)
hi all! can Y580 support 16GB RAM?
*
yes, it can support 16GB RAM. just make sure you are using 64bit OS but not basic edition if using windows. get pro/ultimate edition if using win 7 or pro edition if using win 8.

when i bought my y580 the seller explained that windows 7 64gb cap the ram to 8gb only. If you wish to upgrade to 16gb, u need to get windows 8 installed. i straight go for the y580 with 16gb and am not regretting it now. am using it for designing purpose also.
*
nope.. he is absolutely wrong. since windows xp 64bit, you can use up to max 128gb of RAM. it's just your mobo does not supported up to 128gb RAM. and for Y580, the mobo and current bios support up to 16gb of RAM.

thanks bro but can the ssd survive the heat? i mean will the heat de-grade the ssd or whatever
icon_question.gif

p/s: im using y580
*
SSD generate no heat therefore less heat produce from your laptop. for normal usage such as browsing, watching movie and document editing no need to worry about the heat. but if you are gaming, get a decent laptop cooler. it will help to circulate the air to reduce the heat generate by your CPU & GPU.

check your laptop temperature. SSD normal operating temperature is up to 55-60C if not mistaken.

for example, Samsung SSD:

Temperature
Operating: 0°C to 60°C
Non-Operating: -55°C to 95°C

don't worry to much else it would die faster.

then i guess it's worth to put SATA II SSD to the slot. at least cheaper than sata III ssd like crucial v4.
i think 400+ for 256gb?
*
what's ur budget? if don't have enough budget, just get the 128GB. people are now on SATA3 and yet you still wanna stick with SATA2. better utilize the SATA3. do you need to install so many things on your ssd? just put OS and apps in your ssd, data keep on the hdd. all downloaded stuff put into hdd. i think intel 180gb can get around rm410.

Agree, get the Win 7 version and upgrade to Win 8 Pro. plus if you having problem with Win 8, you can revert back to Win 7 and might use the Win 8 later in the future.
