that is tragic.

but it's no easy to screen out aspiring high school kids who are genuinely "doctor-material".

it's the same with engineering. a school mate who did his degree and masters in engineering at Imperial College, ended up opening his own music school and taught piano lessons to kids.

Actually I know someone who was forced to do medicine and now wants to make his way to the tech industries. Like me, but different order biggrin.gif

I strongly believe in medicine as a graduate degree. There are pros and cons of course smile.gif

i am surprised monash msia continued to require the isat....because they have generally ignored the results in their selection process....

if they were to apply the same standards applied to accepting students into monash clayton, they will hardly get 20 students who qualified...

For AMC accreditation maybe.

Yes, I know it's a requirement for AMC registration of the programme....just being sarcastic...lol

Like all regulatory requirements, they tell you you need something but leaves the details to you....it's up to Monash to decide the cut-off....so Monash decided 20th percentile is still ok....

LYN needs a sarcasm tag 😁

Thanks for yr reply!! It seems like there is so much issue about medicine and also, do u mind share yr experience about surgical skills? Are u scared before going into medical school? Or is there any case where yr coursemate almost get fainted and try to regain their courage? Lol, what I mean is usually can we cope up this affraidness?.....So currently where are u working now? biggrin.gif  ,

First of all, I'm not a doctor biggrin.gif

Anyhoo, faiting is the probably least of your worries. A lot of medical students actually suffer from depression and anxiety. Both from the expectations to do well (most of my colleagues were top scorers in SPM and arent used to being "average" in class) and not knowing what comes next after finishing their degree (6 months - one year of unemployment). Then there's financial issues if you're not sponsored and what happens if you suddenly lose interest but spent a few hundred Ks already... and add to that, the pressure to pay PTPTN loan after graduation.

I think malignant consultants are scarier than blood biggrin.gif OK,. Even O&G MOs are scarier than blood. But why be afraid of blood? In the labour room you'll be dealing with blood, amniotic fluid, poop and pee all at once biggrin.gif

If you have time, do read up Do No Harm by Henry Marsh, When the Air Hits Your Brain by Frank T. Vertosick Jr. and Complications by Atul Gawande.

And find out more about other area that dont require much hands-eye coordination such as dermatology, radiology, endocrinology, infectious disease, psychiatry, rehab medicine, sports medicine, medical genetics, occupational medicine, clinical research, hospital admin, public health etc.

Hi guys,

I would like to seek opinions about going research after mbbs. Which type of master do I need to take? What type of research available for a doctor? Is such master programme competitive? (As I heard surgical specialization quite competitive, limited place and need to pass many exams)

Thanks.

Can define what you meant by research?

Wet research that includes physically handling specimens or dry research with collecting and analysing data?

Check out BMedSc in Monash.

This program is good for doctors with deep pockets who doesn't want to join the never ending queue for masters i guess

Not a game changer...don't see this going anywhere.... although under kpj, training still done under Moh facilities....it is not possible to train people in the private setting....

Not sure why anyone will want to pay so much money, at the same time no income, working free.....to "train" in Moh hospitals with peers doing it for free while getting pay and advancement in civil service....
*
It's stated "It provides candidates with the opportunity to be trained in the management and treatment of a wide variety of ENT diseases in 6 accredited KPJ Specialist hospitals."

Yes it did. You really believe that?

We are talking about surgical speciality training here....not medical students....you should know how surgeons are trained....
*
Of course. Maybe they'll follow the university hospital model - cheaper procedures for patients who agrees to be operated on with a trainee.

It's been ages my friends. Hope everyone's doing well and welcome new members. Life events + exams meaning less time on forums. I can't help much on malaysian medical education system but feel free if you have a question regarding australian medical education/medical training.
