oh wow thanks so much for the info it really helps.
Hmmm now I know the work permit is really important. So for prepaid ezlink pass let's say back and forth from work average around $5 depending on distance right? Where's the recommended place to look for rooms for that price? And once signing the offer letter after the employer applied work permit for me, there would usually be a contract of minimum how long we have to work for them?
*
You can check the rates for room on the websites listed on the first thread (property guru is a good start). Rooms go around $500++ (most include utilities, if staying with the owner, etc). Whole HDB flat (2 rooms (Sg term 2+1 room)) goes for $2000++.

Your employment with the company is like your normal contract (with probation period, notice period etc). Employer apply work pass for you either on a 1 year or 2 year basis (which the company will renew if they still want you or u still want to work with them) You can hop jobs provided that the new company applied successfully a new work pass for you. As always, READ and UNDERSTAND your contract before signing smile.gif

If by the end of the work pass period and you don't get renewal from MOM (requested by your company), your company can appeal, if still fail then you must balik. (one of my colleague EP cannot renew, now company appealing)

Or option B, get PR smile.gif

Hmm what's the reason ur colleague cannot renew?
If we get pr, does that mean we give up Malaysian  citizen?
I have a relative in Johor who are all sg pr, and they travel to sg for work everyday. they applied through the husband/father of the family who is sg citizen. Now their son(my cousin) is going through army.
*

Not sure, MOM don't actually tell you why they reject, etc.

Your relative might be getting a dependent PR, which explain your cousin going for SG national service. If u apply for PR you are still a Malaysian (with Malaysia passport) It's only you get to stay in SG for long term hence PR (permanent resident, there is also a expiry like 5 or 10 years ? not sure on that) without the need for working pass. You don't get to vote though smile.gif . If you decide to become a Singapore citizen, then you need to give up your Malaysian citizenship.

cuz OT will give me extra 5 dollar for food

i dun need to send back money, but my plan is to save up as much as possible then try to invest somewhere else
*
No need to split your food to 2 portion smile.gif. Each meal chap fan around $2.50 to 3. Today I makan in Toa Payoh only $2.50 (rice +steam pork, fried fish thingy + sayur ). Budget around $300~$500 for food , $ 600 for rent single or share room (should be cheaper as in pasir ris I think smile.gif )

*
Prepaid ? prepaid card around $15 (3g). Remember that after the free incoming call period, accepting calls will deduct your credit. I don't use the phone too often, so I top up like $10 a couple of weeks.

Postpaid fees goes around $30 ++ a month depending on plans / usage.

Use Skype or other internet enabled options.

Yesterday i tried to call back my gf for around 30min using prepaid. I checked back the balance, it just costs around $2 ( with IDD018 ), so I think i'm still able to call back frequently. But then I do need the internet plan for my bus route apps and other stuff. Checked with Starhub they said the data plan prepaid can only get in either HQ or another place... ( forget where is it , i think should be suntec city ).

I'm still looking into ways of getting the data prepaid plan, without data plan, it just so trouble during outside.  laugh.gif
*
Not sure about Starhub as I am using Singtel prepaid. Is your SIM a 3g enabled ? Previously my friend bought the normal (no 3G) Singtel prepaid, and need to change to a new SIM (ie new number) in order to have an internet plan (3G enabled SIM).

Seems to me SG prepaid numbers are use and throw away, can't change to post paid, can't change plan, etc.

nolar, nowadays use passport to scan one, no need to do anything special also. first time i tried to use my EP card at the gate then the immigration police came over told me to scan passport (the front page with all your photo and everything).

My fiancee back when she was on LTVP (long term pass) also can use passport to scan.

Nonid apply any special card or anything.

(If WP or SPass I dunno la)
*
How to make it work ? I scan first page of passport a month ago at Tuas checkpoint, cannot (try 2 times) .. malu malu go to normal counter sad.gif

Did you recently renewed your passport? If you did, you need to update the correct dept.
*
Nope, same passport used when EP application. If need to update, which dept to go to update ?

Oh I see. So I still need to enter SG with my passport, and at the immigration white card i should write my purpose of visiting as working.

Thanks for your info. Appreciate it =)
*
Do you have the in-principle letter with you ? you can show that to the immigration officer (SG side) and they sometimes don't even bother processing the white card (happen to a friend of mine). Just fill in everything and leave it to the officer on what he want to do smile.gif

FYI, the white card will be taken away when your documents are processed in EPSC, so when you exit Singapore after getting your employment card, they no longer need to stamp your passport (so you have entry to SG stamp but not out smile.gif )

Good luck in on your adventures in SG

How would he hand over the white card to EPSC if it wasn't given to him at entry? hmm.gif
*
For my friend case the officer just stamp the passport without processing the white card, when he went to ESPC, he didn't gave the white card to ESPC since it was not stamp (still with the 2 part of the white card). Maybe is a one off case ? but that was like a couple of years ago.

For my case when I registered with ESPC for interview and the actual day when I went to ESPC it was a different number on the white card as per registered earlier as I went back within that week before the day I went to ESPC. So the date and number of the white card I registered online is different, luckily managed to get the EP done without any issue smile.gif

Just bring everything in case smile.gif, also your original certs, etc. If your degree, etc is not in English, they will ask you to get those translated.

for ep card holders it is usually $1k to open and a min balance of $500 for monthly fee waiver... unless your company has special relationship which allows you to open for free...
*
Better check with the banks on their min balance and charges. DBS changed to $1000 early this year for min balance when opening new account (old account still maintain $500), $2 every month if min balance not met.

The answer to the above is yes.
Therefore many of us don't pay rent in KL
*
I beg to differ.

Normally you can get a whole house / apartment in KL (dollar to dollar comparison / not using exchange) and then later sublet the rooms if you want and sometimes it might cover even for your own room for free. Try this in SG if you can smile.gif

Also I haven't heard a normal room in KL/ PJ going for RM 500++ rent (not those service apartment types, etc).

^ true, but the comparison was stating that rent was expensive due to most forumers makan free at home without paying rent smile.gif

rent does take a huge chunk of your SG pay if compared to MY pay. But then again cost of food and others is 1/2 price so you will get more value for your $$$.

Actually my comparison was that rent is the same.

My assertion was that many forumers FEEL rent is expensive because they suddenly have to actually pay rent instead of living at home.
*
I see, tersalah baca previosuly smile.gif

Personally I feel is a bit higher as the apartment where I was staying, the rental was going for RM 750+. The cheapest I found in SG going for $1800 (2+1) kosong HDB. Then land is a premium here.

Balance use to offset the next year tax then no need refund smile.gif. SG don't practise PCB (monthly deduction) but you can apply for tax payment by installment for the previous year tax (ie tax for 2011 to be paid in 2012 by installment ).

^ if not PR, foreigners need > 60K to apply for credit card right ? Just use a debit card instead. DBS Visa debit seems OK, can buy online, etc without issue. Heard some debit cards cannot online transaction ?

Better get her to book in advance as there are a few conferences happening this month. Hotel might be sold out.
