You only use the micro usb cable given to you to either charge the phone or connect it to a computer. The S3 can not be mounted as a mass storage device due to the nature of the internal storage only having one partition instead of two partitions in devices build based on Gingerbread and before.(Mounting the internal storage when there's only partition will make the phone go haywire as it can't be mounted on two devices at once and removing it from the phone must not be done).

When you connect the phone to a computer it uses the MTP protocol to transfer stuff to the phone in windows instead of mounting the phone as a mass storage device making it possible to transfer stuff between the phone and computer without dismounting the internal storage from the phone and mounting it on a computer.
