In fac ut need both, however, what is the depth you need to fill in? my previous case, I have 6-7 inch of depth, so filled in the soil as foundation and 1-2 inches of sand as top, in such a way, this will reducing the risk of your grass to die as sand do catalyst the growth of the grass and also provide good water drainage on the bed.

You are growing from seed or direct buy the grass in pieces form? because if purchase grass in pieces, the thickness already 1inch++ so according to your current situation, I am assuming your current ground base is soil one, so just need to top up 2 inches of sand + lay the grass. If you plan to grow from seeds, then different story d

You want to grow from seeds or buy those 1x2 feet grass patches? If grow from seeds, you definitely need soil mix. ↲ I'm planning to level my existing grass area because I just renovated my car porch, my grass area is now lower by about 3inches than my tiled floor. Now, I wanted to dig up the grass and level that land area. Do you guys think I need to add some new soil or just lay fine sands buy from hardware shop? Mine is Taiwan grass and I see the grass grows greener and shorter near the curb on top of cement which makes me think carpet grass grows better on slighly dry hard surface.

And after sungai buluh hospital there's a turning to the left, there you will find a small road and the entire road is filled with nursery...the deeper you go the cheaper it is..Have fun!
