Recently, since we had a lot of questions/inquiries about the OM-D, can we include the link to article from DPReview about the basic operation of OMD? It's a very handy article.

Guys, am new to m43 ... i have a question here
Since the Pana 20mm f1.7 is quite pricey ...

Should i get a 2nd hand Olympus 17mm or should i just go ahead and get a 50mm Nikon or Canon lens and get an adapter ...

Whats the downside of using such lenses on an m43? no AF? no control of aperture?

What else should i be bothered with?
*
Using a non-4/3 lens such as Nikon and Canon will not autofocus.
If you're not concerned with the auto-focus, just get those legacy lenses+adapter. I used couple of OM lenses and it's fun to use.

speaking of that, so far only certain M mount lens i have feels more natural when used on m4/3.  and that's also bcos of zone focusing  *hehe*

if olympus bodies had the feature to half press shutter to get out of the zoomed-in manual focus assist "mode" ... that would help immensely already.
*
You can do that in OM-D

What i did, I assigned the magnify button to Fn2, it's just beside the shutter button.
Press Fn2 to magnify, press again to exit, or press the shutter button.

Why not just set the manual assist to on under the setting menu... When shooting in manual, the lens will auto magnify... Can try that... not sure will work with other brands lens...

You're right.
But if you're using legacy lenses such as OM, Nikkor, and a lot more, manual magnify is a very handy feature.

If you want to use legacy lenses, here's some good info about OM lenses. I've been a fan of these lenses, it's very enjoyable to use. You really feel that photography is in you. Currently I own 50mm f1.4, 50mm f3.5 Macro and 100mm f2.8, still looking for the 135m f2.8 or any other fast telephoto prime.

If you can find the 50mm f1.4, look for the serial number, 6 digit serial number said to have the best glass compared to earlier batch.

Quality in terms of build or image quality?

I would recommend Oly 45mm f1.8 for price and image quality factor.
