QUOTE(Goldiger79 @ Aug 1 2012, 01:41 AM) When washing HOB filter last night. I take out my HOB from tank. Taking it out disturb the tank a bit. Because my intake pipe got sponge to prevent frys suck in. The sponge let go dust so the dust make the water cloudy bit. After that I bring HOB to toilet, pour all the tank water and bio ring into a pail. I use the same tank water to wash bio ring and sponge. But the tank water is dirty so when I put back HOB inside my tank and run, all the dirt that stuck back in the sponge and bio ring flow into the tank make whole tank dusty cloudy. Of course it settle after some time. But is this right method? Will it harm my fish and plants? Anything I do wrong? Hi. I'm no guru but just wanna share my method. I usually turn of the filter first, then siphon half the water from the tank (my tank only 10g). Using this water I squished or wash the biological media. No need to super clean. For the filter intake sponge, for me, it's quite porous and more of a mechanical filter, so if lazy I run it under tap as water siphoned from the tank is already dirty. I do this around once a month. But I do partial water change every week so filter not too dirty.

QUOTE(Goldiger79 @ Aug 1 2012, 02:26 AM) Hi Roshi, thank you. I never though of taking out so much water from the tank. Because I don't store aged water. Basically, I can assume sponge and mechanical filters can use tap water but biological media must use tank water? No worries bro. Yeah, basically we don't wanna disrupt the beneficial bacteria inside the biological filter. In my experience, I found it safe enough to wash the sponge (the one at the filter intake) with tap water. But be sure to NOT let the media out too long it may dry up and kill all those precious little thing Oh if you wanna be sure, you can also use dechlorinator or conditioner on tap water to give you the extra safe water for cleaning the filter.

QUOTE(kurangak @ Aug 4 2012, 01:35 PM) u can try BW growth (i think almost same price as excel ml to ml) or API CO2 booster (much more expensive, but lower content on glutaraldehyde) or at much cheaper price, can try buying metricide 14 online, double the concentration at much cheaper price, liter per liter... Ok thanks bro for the info. Will look it up
