No, only applies when you wanna close apps. If multitask, then use home button
It won't wear off so fast like iPhone's I suppose, so far Galaxy S series home buttons quite good

If SIII were to have a stylus with all those features Note has and a large screen size like it, the Note would not have a "speciality". Larger screen is not always a good thing, phones can never get bigger and bigger right?

I remembered reading an article a few months ago mentioning about this phablet. I think SIII is still a phone, those like Galaxy Note, Optimus Vu are considered as phablets
