We need more information to help you...

1. What are your usage requirements? If it's just gaming, get the Asus G55/G75.
2. Do you need portability? The downside of a gaming notebook is the weight. Imagine 4 kg of weight on your shoulders.
3. Do you want backlit keyboard? Thus far, Y580 and the G series laptop has backlit keyboard.
4. Do you need Full HD?
5. Do you need good after sales service? Asus has reputation for bad service. Lenovo's after sales service is unknown to me.
6. Can you wait for Y580? I'm actually waiting for this tongue.gif, it's a value for money laptop.

Hi, guys.
Thanks for all the replies.
I'll give more details on my laptop search now. ^^

Budget: RM4000-RM5000

Usage:
1. Designing works. Best if able to use Adobe CS6 without any lags.
2. 3D rendering (minor).
3. Able to play latest games such as Diablo 3 and Battefield 3.

I'll agree with what [PF] T.J. said. A G55 will suit you best. And with ur current budget, i doubt you'll be able to get a G75.

Ivy bridge - 3rd
Pros:
1) Less power consumption
2) Smaller design
3) Better overclocking potential (possibly?)
4) Lower price (hopefully?)

3) You can't overclock mobile processor unless its an extreme edition like 3920XM and desktop version of ivy bridge suffers from overheat issue when overclocking because of the TIM usage under the IHS.

4) Lower price? New technology with performance increase. No way in hell Intel will make it cheaper than previous gen. laugh.gif

1) I don't think so, as review and my own review shows the same
2) yup smaller die size,
3) no way for a non extreme mobile processor to over clock
4) no way hell the Intel will reduce the price or cheaper with their new tech.

I would rather take sandy cause is cheaper, and performance just on par in benchmark, inin real life it is not noticeable for daily use

If you have the budget, just go for latest ivy bridge loh..

G55 susah to cari in Lowyat Plaza and Timesquare... not even 1 single unit can I found! I'm talking on teh G55 non 3d version here..

[PF] T.J. @

Is it possible to add 1 additional 256gb ssd into the laptop, so that it has ssd + normal sata hdd which has bigger storage?

normally how much does it cost for the installation + any good recommendation what brand to get for ssd?

hmmm.. because i'm still wondering how much different it is between 2nd gen and 3rd gen.
if not much differences, I would get a 2nd gen i7 and save up some money to add in other stuff to the laptop instead.

my brother get a n53 several months back at around 4k.

Specs:
1. i7 26700M
2. 2GB GT550M
3. 16GB DDR3
4. SSD

I'm planning to get a similar or better than that around that price.
16GB DDR3 RAM is not necessary for me at least. 8GB DDR3 will be fine.

Please note that G55 has a mSATA bay located deep inside its body. And it's not your regular SSD. Trying to access it will results in your warranty being voided. I think the lenovo y580 stands off as a better deal now.

ouch~~~~!
that's not good..

btw, i wanna ask what's the price of the G55 non 3d if I wanna upgrade it straight to 8GB RAM together?
and N55 i7 price?

when is the Y580 coming out? I found that there's not much information regarding this laptop now. I can't even search it in Lenovo website. >.<

Since G55 already comes with a 4gb RAM, and some sellers may just give a free 4gb RAM upgrade. But it depends la. Plus, RAM is not expensive. A 4gb RAM 1333mhz would cost about rm60-80. While a 4gb RAM 1600mhz would cost around rm100+. G55 comes with a default Hyundai 4gb RAM 1600mhz.

N55 i7 price is around rm3.4-3.6k (manage to find one selling for 3.3k but that is months ago) besides, i think the new N56 is already coming out. Replacing the current N55 in the stores. So i'm not sure if the N55 would still be available. But i can tell you that there will not be an increase in price. Should be around 3.5-3.6k

i dont know when will it be available. There are no news about the new y580 yet, if you need a laptop asap. Dont wait for it laugh.gif

i guess you got a point there~
since n55 i7 2nd gen processor already cost 3.4-3.6k, add in another 100/200 already can get g55 i7 ivy bridge..
i guess i shall get the G55 instead. O.o

btw, i saw another model seems quite okay. ASUS A53. Any comments on it? O.o

Initially i was going for the N55, but after i realized that the G53sx (this was before the G55 was released) i opted for that instead since it gives me a better bang of the buck. Plus, i need a strong portable machine to support my softwares (architecture student) now im currently waiting for my G55 to arrive.

and I have a friend who is using the A43. Solid laptop, good performance. But resolution is only HD. If you dont mind it. Then check it out. But its an old laptop though, came out last year.

thanks for the opinion.
but my desire to get the G55 is stronger. hahaha.
i guess G55 will be more worthy and just 100-200 more expensive.

as i'm hardware noob, i still having some doubt about the hardware differences.
such as for:
VRAM, there's DDR and GDDR.
VGA, there's GTX and GT
CPU, 2nd gen and 3rd gen.

CPU - 2nd gen is the Sandy bridge processor while the 3rd gen is the Ivy bridge processor. Ivy bridge is the newer processor just only been released. They're smaller in size and more efficient in power saving and slightly faster than its predecessor. The newer laptops are now equipped with the latest 3rd gen CPU

Generally, for gpu GTX is better than GT. But Diablo 3, a GT gpu can support it given that you're not playing it in ultra high settings. Like GT 635 in the N55.

Cannot comment on DDR and GDDR. Not very sure myself.

I have no idea seriously. It's been more than 2weeks now. But i cant do anything since the asus g series has always been so limited. Keep track for any stores that are selling the G55, new stock should be available by this week.

I would remind you that it really takes a long time for the G55 to come. But unless you're lucky, like a few of the owners in G series thread got it within few days of wait. Look out for sellers in LYN and retail stores that may carry it. I regretted my decision for paying the deposit early thinking that i'll get it fast. I was dead wrong laugh.gif

thanks for the opinion.
but my desire to get the G55 is stronger. hahaha.
i guess G55 will be more worthy and just 100-200 more expensive.

as i'm hardware noob, i still having some doubt about the hardware differences.
such as for:
VRAM, there's DDR and GDDR.
VGA, there's GTX and GT
CPU, 2nd gen and 3rd gen.

The Nvidia GeForce card does not benefit your rendering/design softwares. If you are serious about such softwares, Workstation with Nvidia Quadro laptops are the correct ones that you should get.

the GeForce graphic cards are more suited for gaming rather than design. You won't see much benefit even you pay more for the GeForce card.

Please note that G55 has a mSATA bay located deep inside its body. And it's not your regular SSD. Trying to access it will results in your warranty being voided. I think the lenovo y580 stands off as a better deal now.

Y580 comes with mSATA bay too. Just next to HDD bay.
