Just started swimming again these few weeks.

I notice when the water is very cold, my performance drop alot. Especially breathing part.
Did shiver alot too if dint move around frequent enough.

So how to make my body temperature warmer?
*
water is warmer during evening time, or swim at a faster pace in the beginning to warm yourself up quickly then slowly turn down the pace but don't stop, otherwise you will cool down again.

well, one of those smart swim watches is enough to blow a hole on the wallet...

Garena said it right, if you're consistently swimming a few times a week, there's no way you won't improve.

the same goes for any other activity that you do in life.

but if you're looking to shave off the milliseconds for competitive swimming, get someone to time it for you (cheaper and maybe free)

How to overcome fear of deep water? I can swim breaststroke already (half decent), but still nervous and afraid to go swimming in the deep end. sad.gif
*
use a floatie and do a few laps with it, then try one lap without it. The first time you do it, prolly you'll panic and swim much faster to reach the end so you can grab onto something, hence your expel your energy and you're out of breath, so go back to floatie again to relax. Do a few times a week then start doing two laps without it in rotation, then increase to 3 etc. until you're physically strong enough to do without it permanently (yes, there is no magical overnight express lesson, put your commitment to it and you'll see some results)

if you're a complete noob, never swim alone, have someone overwatch you or swim when there's others around. The 25m pool would be easier too than going for the olympic size. GL

After three months of swimming about 3~4 times a week, started with only 350M each session... Now i can finally swim at least 700M per session without stopping! I am using Garmin Swim to track. Really happy that I have made this a habit, can feel my body starting to tone and I sleep better, feel more confident about myself generally! I don't get headaches/migraine so often anymore! Problem is I haven't really lost weight cause never control my diet. LOL! But most of my clothes and pants are starting to become really loose.
*
well done, wish I had the budget for a garmin watch,

if you aim to lose weight, you need to measure according to calories per hour. A one hour swimming session would burn less than an hour of jogging depending on the stroke. Also, you lose metabolism much quicker after you stop swimming as compared to jogging because the water cools you faster.

http://www.active.com/triathlon/articles/h...s-swimming-burn

700m would take a around 15mins+ on endurance or less if you're into speeding. It is said that catabolic state doesn't happen until at least hitting into the 20th minute during the cardio session. I generally keep a ratio of 2:1 for myself, means 2 hrs of non-stop swimming is equivalent to 1 hr of non-stop jog, but I am a full time flier so it should be more in theory.

may i ask what brand of swimming attire is long lasting?

i bought ogival shorts type tights but some fabric become damaged/ expand  after use 3 to 4 months.. cant use anymore
i prefer the shorts/tights type with another piece of underwear inside.... so far hard to get.  ogival had it but now cant find
*
bought the same brand at Aeon. It turns crappy after a year. I do not think any brand will last if you consistently use it few times a week. Treat it like wear and tear like jogging shoes. Always wash with clean water after use to rinse off the chlorinated water, that should preserve them longer.

Also could not find the same pair anymore, so gave up and bought some no namer jammers online.

Any idea on inexpensive classes I can go to learn butterfly stroke around KL? I can do the other strokes fairly OK and swim fairly often around 2-3 times a week in a condo pool in Mt Kiara. The others I can pick up fairly OK, but butterfly I have a major problem with mastering the dolphin kick/body swerve thingy. Think I may not limber enough. Any suggestions on classes?
*
I have no qualifications to teach you, but based on my weekly experiences, it will demand a much higher discipline on maintaining fitness level and physique. One of the reason I retired from the other strokes was to maximise calories burned per hour as it is my main cardio.

If you have determination, you should be able to self-learn. Master the freestyle then do a few dolphin kicks for every freestyle laps, it's hard to explain in words but try to read up on undulation, that is what your body should be doing endlessly and effortlessly. GL

BTW, do you live at that condo or do you sneak in to utilise the pool?

QUOTE(miyakochan89 @ Jun 17 2015, 09:38 AM)
Thanks! rclxms.gif

I swim after my work so usually I don't have time to swim for one full two hours. LOL I usually get so tired and won't be able to wake up the next day even if I sleep early that day. Perhaps I need to train further. But I like swimming instead of jogging because I fell down in high school and busted my knees. Now I couldn't really do land sports without feeling slight pain on one of my knees so swimming is my to-go exercise. I did read about all the articles swimming vs jogging. While jogging burns more calories, I like the fact swimming tones your entire body instead of just one part of it.
*
That's ok, after a year, you're going to get used to it and 700m will be a bore. I don't like to stress my knees from jogging so swimming is my forte.

The other main drawback you would experience is the sudden elevated hunger level after a long swim, you might be tempted to snacking more than you should. I don't have any tips to suppress that, you're going to have find a way to control it yourself nod.gif

To be honest, when I weigh myself, the scale doesn't seem to drop, but the changes on the body is very obvious, like it's more toned. Also, when you wear your clothes, that one you will know cause things are looser. Most importantly is that you will feel healthier and more confident. That feeling is awesome!

I have started taking coconut oil, two spoons in the morning. Apparently it helps to fight abdominal fats which is very hard for me to lose them because I am a woman and apparently we are genetically designed to have more fats on that area to protect babies.  hmm.gif  That's according to a few articles i read online and also my colleague who works as part time trainer. So she recommended me trying coconut oil. Besides that, it really has lotsa other benefits!

Diet is so hard to control honestly, haha! I couldn't stop my craving but I did cut off rice from my diet. And also I eat late, because after swimming, it's already about 8PM. And also I work in fast food industry! Haha!

I am glad that you all are starting to work out again! Keep us updated of your progress! rclxms.gif

IMHO, as long as your weight is correct based on BMI you're fine, don't focus on the numbers, but what's inside those numbers, muscle or fat.

I place muscle building as one of the important keys. Yes, women should do some weight training too. Your muscles will burn all your extra calories even while you're watching drama. Then top it off with core exercises and cardio. Diet is to control your calories intake so you get into caloric deficit. But diet isn't so easy as you'll end up hungry and might even get more sickness if not properly planned.

Oh from Bukit Jalil LRT, is it walking distance to the pool? If it is then I can try some days. do they allow fins in the pool?

PJPalm is not standard olympic, length wise 50m but width is 18m. the white line 15m marker is also at 17m instead of 15m. but for leisure like me, oklah, enough facilities.

I train for diving so the deep part is convenient and Pjpalm is the only public pool so far that allows fins and such.
*
PJ Palms... first impressions irked me. Half the pool is gone reserved for "lessons" which I see a few kids at the side chatting like in mamak,

the other half is overloaded like a sausage fest.

Should ask for 50% discount from ticket counter.

i think all swim strokes can help reduce stomach if you engage your core muscle correctly while swimming. but of course the most engaging in core muscle is butterfly. i also cannot do haha
*
the dolphin kick is the one that engages the core and it should be relatively easy to practice as well. Just incorporate it into the kick off from the wall after each lap while doing breaststroke or front crawl.

laugh.gif  where can i buy/ or what else i can use as replacement?
*
cheap replacement:

1. buff with baby shampoo one drop on each lense, rub nicely with cloth before taking goggles for a swim.

2. forgot to buff before going to pool, no worries, collect some spit in your mouth and spit once on each lens and rub nicely with fingers. Then rinse once in water.

both methods are good enough for one swim session (because you'd rinse your goggles with tap water after use).

thanks.. lucky i have baby shamppoo.. using it tongue.gif

btw, i wanna get wa watch for swimming to track time.. after hunt down a few shop.. shall i go for sport brand ( i like Puma design) or go for those normal waterproof casio/sekio brand which not so sporty type hmm.gif

i haven wear any watch since like 10 year ago biggrin.gif
*
if getting a digital watch for swimming, make sure:

1. it is waterproof, the higher rating the safer, reputable brands like Casio 3 ATM also good enough for pools.

2. digital numbers are big, this is so you don't have to bend your arm and squint your eyes to look at the time closely while you're swimming, disrupts the pacing and stresses your watch arm.

I liked how Timex Ironman watches look, they are only around RM 150 on Amazon, they won't ship to Malaysia and over here the prices are too expensive.

just for counting laps, the cheapest of the cheapest is the lap counter clicker from ebay/aliexpress, those that you manually click to get a number up, just click once every time you complete a lap (to and fro), breaks the pace though.

to look cooler a bit, I tried a pebble classic with SwimIO app and Swim.com app which automatically sense and counts laps, it is spot on accurate for front crawl/free style, not sure on breaststroke, absolute fail on butterfly. Had to give up because of that.

if you got money to burn, the Garmin Swim should give decent results for all strokes, but there's hardly any market for this device and can only find brand new ones.

as for me, I find my own average speed in km/hr after using the clicker a few times, threw the clicker aside then focus on completing 1 - 2 hr sessions a few times a week as maintenance.

hey guys..

when i shop around watch shopping during xmas sales..
all give me same answer. 10ATM are not good for pool. need me take at least 20ATM above-
any idea? i start to swim like 2 day perweek and around 1hours a day.. ( still working on my stanima to stay longer)
*
i would like to meet the sales people who made these statements doh.gif (it's no wonder I give up going to shopping malls for years now)

https://www.quora.com/What-does-10-ATM-mean-on-a-watch

3 ATM from a well known brand like Casio is good enough for the pool.

I also tried China 5 ATM watches from online shopping and they held up nicely after stressing in the pool, but the timekeeping is another issue (don't expect much for something less than rm 30)

Timex Ironman Triathlon are majority 10 ATM at most, if sea swimming no issues, the pool is peanuts for the watch.

get polyester or polyester + PBT mix for chlorinated water.

avoid lycra/spandex unless swimming in the sea.

if you got money to burn, Speedo Endurance Plus, TYR Durafast or Arena poly swimwear, mostly 50/50 polyester/pbt,

if you're on budget, Marium swimming trunks on ebay 90/10 polyester/spandex

How much time does one ppl normally finish a 50m ?
*
incredibly subjective.

students training for competitive swimming would be aiming for half a minute and below.

marathon swimmers should be conservative on energy usage and would be around 45 seconds to a minute+ but factors will change after the first hour and subsequent hour afterwards.

for consistency and endurance in swimming, technique is key, muscles only partially helps. The focus is knowing a proper breathing technique, and proper recovery on every stroke count so that you don't get tire out easily and maintaining a steady heart rate.

It's very much like cardio on the treadmill once you go long distance, the functionality is the same but technique and muscle memory is different.
