Centipedes, scorpions and spiders seem to be drawn towards the box only to be engulfed in a white mold that kills them. For display purposes, a mock box of the same box was created. When the mock box was completed, a giant storm occurred causing a 100-year-old tree to fall on the mocker's home.

As for the movie, obviously does a Hollywood take on it with the usual scare factors amped up to typical horror movie levels. I think it is more like "loosely" based on.
