Is it ok to install Visual Studio 2003 and also Visual Studio 2005 into one same machine? Will there be any conflict problems?

Pennywise,
It is 100% safe to do this, as I am also doing this. The reason behind is they don't share DLLs in the typical way cause the DLL HELL. Happy Coding & Happy 2006 |

You sure ah? Everything is separate and it's 100% safe right? Because I tried opening some 2003 project in VS2005, convert already 2003 cannot open anymore. Scary!
One noobie question: If I wanna code a web-based application to be used within an intranet or even across the internet, I use Web Application correct? In Visual Studio 2003, I do this: FILE --> NEW --> PROJECT --> Visual C# Projects --> ASP.NET Web Application But in Visual Studio 2005, I dont see any Web Application options when I choose NEW PROJECT... So I go FILE --> NEW WEBSITE --> ASP.NET WEBSITE (Language: Visual C#), correct? |

Perhaps, you can do it in that way. Otherwise, you can always have multiple project in a solution, so 1 of them being web and the other being windows apps. Those all in 1 solution.
Final thing, once open in 2005, you can never open it in 2003. Because there always impossible for developer to code a program that forsee what to support in the future automatically. Get it? (no forward compatible in IT) Hope this helps. |

Thanks for posting dude.
Yea, once it was open in 2005, cannot open in 2003. I think you meant backward compatible? I want to write a software, entirely web-based deployed in many branches, linked via VPN. Cannot afford mistakes, thats why I asked. Thanks for all the help! |

VS2005 can open VS2003 or older version of project or workspace. Not VS2003 to open VS2005 project or future (non existent one). It is correct as wat aahkam said, forward compatible. Normally what the IDE does it just to store some setting on how you want to link up the source codes and resource handling stuff. If your source codes (not the project, resource and setting) is compatible in both, you can still port it back to older version. Of course, you need to fiddle a bit. Anyway, you have to decide on which IDE you want to use. I doubt there are any reasons why you need to use both to do the work. |

I didnt wanna use both. Of course I wanna use the 2005 version, more controls, more features especially the login controls are already there for me to use.
So aahkam is right, thanks for clearing the confusion. Appreciated. |

Use Virtual PC if you are not comfortable to have both system running under the same operating system.

QUOTE(ch_leong @ Jan 8 2006, 08:19 PM) Use Virtual PC if you are not comfortable to have both system running under the same operating system. virtual PC == slow~~~~~~And using virtual PC to run the IDE and compilation seem unsafe to me in the way if the executable can be used or properly built. Certain driver program doesn't run correctly in virtual PC. |
