Sky sources understand Liverpool have parted company with manager Kenny Dalglish, with Wigan's Roberto Martinez favourite to replace him.

Dalglish returned to Liverpool in January 2011 as caretaker under new owners Fenway Sports Group and was then appointed on a three-year permanent deal last summer.

After spending £35million on Andy Carroll, he then invested a further £80million last summer, but Premier League results have been poor and despite a Carling Cup final success, it was their worst league campaign since the 1950s.

The Reds lost the FA Cup final to Chelsea and ended up finishing eighth in the league, below city rivals Everton.

After Dalglish flew to America earlier this week to meet the club's owners, a decision has been made to part ways and it is understood that FSG already have targets in mind.

Sky Sports understands that Wigan boss Martinez is top of their list of targets and the man who turned Aston Villa down last summer could find it hard to shun a switch to

Sam Allardyce has said that he and Mark Hughes have not been given enough time at bigger clubs. The Blackburn Rovers manager also said that he would win a league title every year if he was in control of Real Madrid or Manchester United.

Allardyce and Hughes meet tomorrow as the managers of Blackburn and Fulham. Hughes was sacked by Manchester City last season and Allardyce's time in charge of Newcastle lasted less than half a season.

"I'm not suited to Bolton or Blackburn, I would be more suited to Inter or Real Madrid," Allardyce said. "It wouldn't be a problem to me to go and manage those clubs because I would win the double or the league every time. Give me Manchester United or Chelsea and I would do the same, it wouldn't be a problem. It's not where I'm suited to, it's just where I've been for most of the time.

"It's not a problem to take me into the higher reaches of the Champions League or Premier League and [it] would make my job a lot easier in winning it."

Hughes has made a good start at Fulham, who are one of five teams unbeaten in the Premier League so far. He spent three seasons as a player and four years as manager at Blackburn.

Allardyce said the Welshman had been harshly treated: "His Manchester City reign obviously was not long enough. A little bit like me at Newcastle, but I didn't last quite as long as Sparky, though. He was given the chance and unfortunately at that stage of his career they decided to have a change.

"You look back on it and he'll be very disappointed because they only lost two games, I think. But that is the way it is sometimes, there's a perception that other people can do better than you, but often the reality is not the case.

"[Hughes] decided that Fulham was the place for him, he's taken over what he's described in his own words as a very good team and he's started where they left off last season."

Allardyce said Fulham would feel the loss of the striker Bobby Zamora, who suffered a broken leg last week.

He said: "Bobby Zamora was the most improved player last year without a shadow of a doubt. He gets them into a European [Europa League] final, he gets himself in the England squad and all of a sudden he becomes an outstanding centre forward."

Whelan advises Martinez against Reds

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has told ESPN that he would advise his manager Roberto Martinez, the favourite to succeed Kenny Dalglish, to steer clear of the vacant manager's position at Liverpool.

Whelan was shocked when ESPN broke the news to him of Dalglish's sacking, even though it had been expected, and he believes that Liverpool need to find a completely new management structure.

"The club have great supporters, but the place is a morgue, a desolate place, without heart, all I can say is what a shame for their supporters," he said.

"The club needs a management structure, it needs a boardroom filled with the people running the club. When we went there, there was Alan Hansen welcoming people, it was a bit embarrassing to be honest, although he was doing his best."

Whelan also insisted that the Reds should be treating the man known as 'the King' with more respect.

"They shouldn't be sacking Kenny Dalglish, they should be making him chairman, let him run the place," he continued. "As for a new manger, I am sure they might want my manager, but he's been the favourite for the West Brom job, then favourite for the Aston Villa job, now he's favourite for the Liverpool job.

"I don't know who they will appoint, they have to sort themselves out, all I can tell you is that I haven't had an approach for Roberto.

"I hope Roberto is with me for the start of the new season, but in football you can never tell. I do know that he is an honest man, and if he is approached by anyone he will tell me about it.

"If Roberto thought he could go to another club because that club was so big and the challenge so great he couldn't resist it, then I would step aside and let him, but I wouldn't think he should go to Liverpool, he would be better off with us."

Martinez, who has impressed in four seasons at the DW Stadium, would look an obvious choice for the position at Liverpool, though Rafael Benitez would be a popular choice among many Liverpool fans. However, Fenway Sports Group, the American owners, will perhaps not wish to go for the sentimental choice once again.
