You can backup your apps without rooting by using MyBackupPro but i don't think you can backup your data without rooting.

SMS, contacts and logs can backup using SuperBackup.

If you really lucky the you might get updates via FOTA though it's very un-likely. You have to use Kies or go to service centre and ask them to help you update your firmwares.

You using the G or non-G version? Me and my sis never have problem with the non-G phones. My phone rooted and my sis on stock.

That's because the rom got many new features in it.

Try clear your Messaging app data.
Regard SMS Backup & Restore, did you view the sms without restore it first.? If no then try restore it first then only open to view its content.

Added on May 20, 2012, 9:07 amMost probably but some S2 official rom is around 580MB already. So the S3 bigger 200MB only, not 300 - 400MB :-P
GNote official rom when first comes out around 880MB if i'm not mistaken followed by each official roms that's not less than 800MB :-)
