I've just started Dance of Dragons. It's a fantastic series and a incredible TV series too. But according to reviews Dance of Dragons is supposedly not as good as all the books before it. But we'll see.

Is it good? I have too many series to finish and can't afford to start another epic fantasy.
The way of kings King killer chronicles The first law Wheels of times And other Pitter patter of little fantasy series I am enjoying the tv shows now n hate to spoil it by comparing the show to the book. This post has been edited by reveur: May 16 2012, 11:28 AM |

QUOTE(reveur @ May 16 2012, 11:27 AM) It's not good. IT'S EPIC. I would say it's the best fantasy book I've ever read (not that I've read many actually). It's like the LOTR of our generation. But don't take my word for it, it's been topping the bestseller lists for awhile now and it's TV adaption has one of the highest budgests for a HBO series. Go and read A Game of Thrones, it's beyond worth making time to read. |

I am really happy to see people getting into ASOIAF. I read it ages ago, and I don't have time to reread them. Which I should, as there are so many things I cannot remember. I haven't read Dances of Dragon yet, and already I lost track of a number of people (Brom anyone?) Nothing is sacred in GRRM's world, really gritty stuff. Fantastic as I loved political intrigues.
Honestly, the 'bad guys' have more depth than the 'good guys' at this point. It could be GRRM's intention though. I really wonder how he will wrap up all the threads. HBO did a fantastic job on translating the series to the silver screen. As there are length dialogues and many parallel storylines, the pacing suffers badly though, through no fault of the production team. Just my 2 sens. |

Contemplating buying A Dance With Dragon.Thing is, I read Bk 1 about 10 years ago. I think I need a read through to enjoy (and recall) the stories and characters in detail. But time is a factor! I have a feeling I will just fork out the money the next time I am in a bookstore - lol. I wish the gap wasn't so huge between the books.
Jean.lim - do continue the series! It gets better. I remember literally raising my eyebrows at parts in A Storm of Swords. |

Ahaa, I saw some new fans here
Can't wait for 2013 tho, the next season of their series. While for the book, I haven't read book 5 yet, I think I will wait til year end of early next year, so I can warm up for the TV series. |

Reading Book4 currently... 1/4 into it...
found it a bit hard to swallow after the magnificent Book3 the introduction of many minor characters POV and lack of few major characters also contribute to the factor... Seems like it's the only book so far I'm forcing myself to finish compared to previous 3 which is always "one more chapter before I close the book". lets hope the plot gets better soon Btw... i flipped to the last page and read about GRRM explains the reason behind the lack of major characters, and initially planned to release book5 a year after book4 and that was in 2004, took him almost 7 years to come out with book5 Will it be another 7 years wait for Book6? and more for the concluding saga for Book7? just hope he won't pull a Robert Jordan stunt |

Book 1-3 is fantastic and interesting
Book 4-5 makes me feel a bit sad. Things are happening at such a snail pace, I just skip and get Read that George RR Martin actually planned to skip 5 years ahead after book 3. He really should have done so, I felt really upset with Book 4 &5. So much filler... I keep asking myself, where is the meat, when is something interesting going to happen. I have no idea how the producers of the TV series on HBO will handle Book 4 & 5. It's going to be very hard to translate Book 4 & 5 into a TV series... Probably they'll streamline the mess in the books. This post has been edited by agewisdom: Aug 23 2012, 10:34 PM |

I've read all 5 and completely disagree with those who say a Dance with Dragons is not as good as previous books. I believe the people who say this are fans of specific characters who don't show up much in book 5 because its timeline is parallel with that of the characters in book 4.
People should see book 4 and 5 as two parts of the same book. They are indeed very good books which involves less fighting and more politics than previous books. PS: v0ltage, I'm supposed to pass book 5 to you. |

Since there's a lot of Kingkiller fans here...anyone interest in Wise Man's Fear 1st edition hardcover? willing to trade for paperback of both book 1 and 2.
Reason selling: Was among the first at Big Bad Wolf. Found it, couldn't believe my eyes that it was a 1st edition and there were only 3 there. Took 1. But I don't like hardcovers and I haven't even read the first book -.-" |

It is definitely worth reading but be warned, it's not your typical fantasy.and btw, i am into fantasy like Salvatore's Drizzt or Raymond E Fiest's saga..so will this be good? on par? or..? In fact, most readers will tell you that there's so little 'magic' that it's almost not fantasy. It's more political fiction. The characters are grey, a lot of foreshadowing and death is as common as life. In terms of the way the characters are built, I'd say it's a lot like the First Law trilogy (if you've ever heard of it). Also remember that this is an Epic Fantasy which means the books might go on for a while (although GRRM said only two more books, I don't believe him). Robert Jordan died before he could finish WoT. Tolkien eventually got bored of fantasy after taking 20 years to write the Silmarillion (which he didn't finish). DO NOT expect these to be 'quick reads'. |

Though i still dunno wat are those Others they kept referring to yet...hopefully will be revealed soon..... and btw, it's quite fresh to see the first 3 chars get wiped out so fast in a fantasy novel..i expected at least 1 to live and tell the tale and to last until the following book..or at least to the mid or so... |

BTW, you might find it interesting to watch some of these writers' interviews on Youtube.
Abercrombie and Rothfuss are hilarious people. GRRM is semi-funny and Sanderson comes across as very serious about his work. |

Books are almost always better than the shows. This is no different. |

Had a 1hour read at Kinokuniya the other day. His style of writing is great. Though, I'm only gonna get the boxset after the final book has released.

QUOTE(lovehatesmisery @ Apr 4 2013, 06:52 PM) Had a 1hour read at Kinokuniya the other day. His style of writing is great. Though, I'm only gonna get the boxset after the final book has released. What RM240 box set? I've never seen it before.PS: Yes, I agree on boxed sets. It is generally best to get them after the series has finished if you're a collector. |

Cool looking boxset (big too) with the family insignias printed on the box. 6 books total, with two split into Part 1 & 2. PS: Yes, I agree on boxed sets. Funnily enough, Harper Voyager also has a Dance in Dragons in 1 book as an 'option'. This alternative wasn't available for UK edition readers when book 3 was released. In my collection, I have book 3 in 2 parts and I have book 5 in one part. I prefer the Voyager version over the Random House ones because fonts are bigger and the paper is of a slightly better quality. It annoyed me greatly when Random House released their international paperback before Voyager. I had to buy the RH version, read it, 'gift' it to a friend then buy the Voyager version so my books match on my shelf This post has been edited by highbury1913: Apr 4 2013, 10:47 PM |

Was so tempted to get it, but I've finally made it a point to wait til' the story comes full circle. That will save you some money and still allow you to read the books. |

Just found this amazing thread for superb song of fire and ice series! Love this series to bits, hands down the best i've ever read and George RR Martin should be knighted!
Started reading this series just a year ago but stopped at book 4 to sync it with the tv series, but the book is still 1000x better than the telly series I love the way mr martin tells the story with very specific details till i can imagine out each scene (thanks to telly series i can put faces to each character), and when he kills off characters, my favorite, as not many authors kills off their book characters easily, thus putting a good spin to this series! |
