all AT89S family mcus isp can be activated via atmel isp software and the cable. i diy-ed the cable but for now still under testing cos not reliable. I canot find the model of mcu that you mentioned.

what IC do you wanna program ? talk to fritzlist. he should be able to direct you. hanskoh, what kind of electronics are you interested in ? There are many types of hobbyists out there. Some play only audio, some are into robotics, some are into gadgets. Try to see what kind of electronics make you tick. That should get you started in the right direction. And remember, don't be afraid to ASK ! As long as you try, there will be people willing to help you out.
