I'm sort of desperate d. The manager called & had phone interview for me, so i asked him whether my chances are high or not, he said it's a 50-50 chance..
Sigh..have to wait for him to contact me again for a face2face interview.
OrcaGal,As a professional practice, you should never ever ask what your chances of being hired are, even though it is a natural reaction for most people. In my newbie years, I have committed that very same error myself and often with detrimental effects. I later learned from top recruitment agencies around the world (from my research), that very same question you asked is what might reveal enough about you to them to make a judgment. More often than not, the judgment will not be in your favor.
Asking what your chances are reveals 2 things about you:
1. You are not confident in securing the job, and that even if you do get it you are just "lucky".
2. You are desperate for a job, which means that you either do not have alternatives or have been rejected by others. In either case, they will renegotiate the contract with you and attempt to offer less than what you're worth or completely reject you on the grounds that there is a reason why others did the same.
To top up James' comment,
Even if it is 99-1, the manager still won't tell you much unless he's a complete buddy outside work. The reason being that nobody wants to be responsible in the event that they give you good news initially only to find out the reverse later on.
