Unless we're talking about group breaking research, that's a different story. They probably are interested in you and doing this just to check whether you're just all talk or really can prove what you wrote in your resume. I kinda went through the same thing but it was a final stage interview and the partners wanted to see some my work, pass it to them after the interview and got an offer in like 3 days.
