Many people looking at MyBrain as the last resort because of the 3 years government bond - to work in M'sia. Why not give a look at your university scholarship or find a company that willing to sponsor your PhD.

3 years might not be a big deal, but if you get a post-doc offer from oversea, you gonna wave bubyez because of this bond.

Can anybody here with similar experience share your experience as a part time Phd student?

I will be resigning soon.

What I find is that I lose out a lot as a part-time student. There are many seminars held in my university and I have missed some of it.

Some of my colleagues are doing it on a part-time basis and I found out the very reason why they are doing it part-time. The reason is because PhD is not a priority to them. They are just doing it for the sake of hoping for a promotion IF they could actually graduate with it. They are very much happier holding on to their positions and career. Not surprisingly, I found out that they are dragging their PhD research for a couple of years already.

For me, I have a deep interest in the research I'm writing, so I'm willing to sacrifice my job to go full-time.

Thanks for the info. It didn't occur to me that one would most likely has to wave goodbye to any post-doc offers because of the 5-year bond.

Different field has different set of requirement and commitment towards the PhD studies. You guys should talk to your potential supervisor and see what they say. Some courses-yes you can do it part time basis. Like mine, she wants me to be doing full time in her lab. Also, while in the process of writing my phd proposal, I realized that it is almost impossible for myself to work and to do my phd at the same time. I'm pretty sure i'm gonna go into depression mode if I choose that path. My initial plan was to do both-work and study-till we talked. Oh btw, I'm in the science research field.

What about computer science, is it suitable to do as a part time basis especially Phd?

I have been thinking for a couple of months whether I should convert to be a full time PhD student.

Pros of being a full timer
- More time to spend on your PhD research
- More time to write papers as well
- You can get it done faster

Cons
- No income unless you apply for a scholarship

Pros of being a part timer
- Steady income

Cons
- Less time to spend on research
- Distraction
- Work is your main priority
- It will take a longer time to finish the PhD
For me, I think income and time are the deciding factors.

the decision to full time/part time should depend on whether you can cope with the course or not. i have friends who completed phd part time and full time.

but, those who did part time said they really struggle. phd demands lots of time, energy and brain. which makes it hard to stay on a job and do phd.

while i was doing masters, we used to have sharing sessions with phd students and 100% of them said do phd full time. it is a lonely journey, so dont put too much of burden on your shoulder, scared might drop dead halfway. biggrin.gif

i would support full time. actually im starting my phd in ukm. just for 2 sems (cos just developing the framework of reasearch) i will be part time, after that full time.

as your problem is finance, there are many things you can do. apply for scholarships, if your supervisor has got research grant you can apply for it, do part time tutoring for degree and master students (for some subjects of master students, you can get about rm120/session), can also try to be Research Assistant for you supervisor....
