If you just go take a functional cert it can be pretty expensive - round 30K or so for the cert for one module.

Some friends of mine went to join BP SAP excellence team. They got nice raises since it is O&G company, hours are very lenient, dress code is flexible, KL Sentral location is convenient. Worth a try if you don't mind end user environment.

But if you are out to learn and fill your resume, BP's customization is via templates so you might prefer to join project-based vendors instead.

if u like much lower pay SAP basis, then you should try to apply in a company called Vantage Point.
If you can succeed there, you can succeed anywhere.

been reading through couple of old LYN sap threads, but theres one thing im confused. are technical consultants = abap? im asking because i recently got a job offer (freshie) for technical consultant and from what i understant reading through all those old threads, functional is more lucrative?

any idea what kind of future job prospects am i looking at if i start going down the technical consultant route (basis)?

of course functional is more lucrative. ill take functional anytime over basis.
basis is like the end of the road for sap people. don't get me wrong, it is still good. tongue.gif

yes this is true unfortunately sad.gif and we usually get our hands dirty. basis work is very broad.

well sorry but i disagree with this smile.gif at least for a lot of us here we don't feel that way. the pay may be painfully lower than the functional guys, but our importance on the SAP business is very well highlighted. just think about who are the first SAP people who would kick off an implementation.

also, being a basis support, you get to see a better view and understanding of the whole technical picture how the business is running.

but of course, it doesn't really take away the fact that functional is and will always be more lucrative than basis. biggrin.gif

in SAP, technical will fall into 3 main part, basis / abap / security. this are the 3 main modules for technical (as of right now, they have APO for technical too. correct me if i'm wrong biggrin.gif). others module will fall under functional. but i'm not sure if BI fall under technical or functional. any comments from the seniors?

SAP stand for system application product. it is an enterprise resource planning (ERP) tools or program that being used to manage daily process. sap also have many modules such as FICO/SD/MM/BI/ABAP/Basis/Security and few others new stuff such as APO/BPC and etc2.

Ah.. so basis not the same as abap? Getting some help from a 'friend' to get a basis job but am currently considering my choices since im from mechanical background. i do love programming tho, will that help with basis? how about future job prospects?

nope, basis is not the same as abap (though in the components, ABAP is under Basis - BC-ABA).

basis stuff is heavily technical. if you love programming, you will adapt with basis but it would be better if you go for abap.

1. Technical - ABAP/BI/BO/Portal/Java/PI/Conversion
2. Functional - MM/FI/PM/APO/FI/CO/SRM/CRM/SD/BPC/etc
3. Basis - Servers, clients, portal, java stack, database, security etc.

Advice
- Functional earns the most money. I have functional ex-colleagues earning RM20000 to RM40000 per month. It is very hard to get lifecycle experience, but once you do you really can earn a ton of money

- Avoid technical. Every non-GLC client is outsourcing support or project development to Indian outsourcing like WIPRO.
