This past year has been a phenomenal one for Bayern Munich having added five trophies to their cabinet. Goal looks back on a memorable 2013 for the German giants.



The year 2013 has been nothing short of remarkable for Bayern Munich. The have won everything they could have laid their hands on. At the start of this new year, we look back at the record-breaking team that won the Bundesliga, Champions League, Super Cup, Club World Cup and the German Cup over the last twelve months.

Bayern started the 2012-13 season under Jupp Heynckes who continued his third stint as manager for the club. In the 2011-12 season, his team lost out to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and German Cup. They also came agonizingly close to winning the Champions League, only to lose to Chelsea in 2012 final at the Allianz Arena.

Armed with the shrewd signings of Dante, Javi Martinez, Mario Mandzukic and Xherdan Shaqiri (whose deal was agreed upon in February) in the summer of 2012, Heynckes made the team even more formidable than they were before. They went from strength to strength in all competitions, not merely beating but often demolishing the opposition in ominous style.

There stunning form served as a warning to all the other clubs in Europe that maybe Bayern Munich may have finally arrived. They continued the good work put in the first half of the season, and ultimately won the 2012-2013 league title comfortably for the record 23rd time in their history.

They did so comfortably and the statistics would agree. They broke a total of 30 records enroute to the title, including totaling 91 points at the end of the season, leading the next best challenger by 25 points, winning the most matches in a season with 29 and suffering the fewest defeats (1). They became the first team in Bundesliga history to win the league in less than 30 rounds (28 in this case), with 6 matches to spare.

Then came the Champions League, a mountain they just could not seem to conquer. After recent defeats in the finals, many felt Bayern did not have it in them to go all the way. They had done very well only to fall at the last hurdle.

In the 2013 final against arch domestic rivals Borussia Dortmund at the Wembley Stadium in England, Bayern set out to make amends. They ended up doing just that. Showcasing determination and steely nerves, they beat Dortmund and put to rest the ghosts of past failures. It was indeed redemption for several of their players who were scarred by losing in the final twice.

No doubt the 7-0 aggregate thrashing of the mighty Barcelona in the semi-finals helped give them the confidence to secure the trophy. In June, they picked up the DFB Pokal, beating VFB Stuttgart 3-2 in the final. While doing so, Bayern became the first German team to win the treble.

Heynckes' reign came to an end as he had stated his intention to not continue with the club post the 2012-13 season which led to the announcement of Pep Guardiola as his successor way back in January last year.

Given Bayern had won everything on offer in the season gone by, replicating that success was going to be hard. But if there was one man you would bet on, it would probably be Pe who had led Barcelona to an unprecedented success.

When you have a successful team, you face a different sort of problem. You have to continue on the right track, without allowing the players to become complacent. New managers try to stamp their own style on the team, but the harmony within the side should not be compromised.

New players have to be integrated seamlessly. This is the challenge Bayern faced, and Pep understood that. The team was nearly perfect and playing outstanding football. There were no major changes required, only the minor Chinese needed to be ironed out. Pep brought in Mario Gotze and Thiago Alacantra, two rising starts to bolster the all-star midfield. The transfer of Gotze from arch rivals Dortmund was particularly acrimonious.

Pep is a smart man, and to his credit, he did not try to impose Barcelona’s fabled tiki-taka style on Bayern though they now hold possession more than they used to. He has made changes and improved them, but they have not lost their identity. He has tried different styles and formations with Philipp Lahm being played in midfield.

He said Lahm was "the most intelligent player" he had ever coached and that the German's tactical awareness and technical quality have been perfect, freeing up those in front of him to attack. Pep won his first trophy for Bayern beating Jose Mourinho's Chelsea 5-4 on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup in August.

As of today they lead the Bundesliga by 7 points over Bayer Leverkusen and with 12 over Dortmund. Bayern also made easy work of the Club World Cup in December, picking up the title without breaking a sweat, defeating Raja Casablanca 2-0.

Having been drawn against Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals, Bayern do not have the easiest draw. However, they will take confidence from the fact that they beat them last time around on the way to the title. They also continue their march in the DFB-Pokal cup where they are in the quarter-finals.

To sum it all up, Bayern won 5 trophies in 2013 - The Bundesliga, Champions League, DFB Pokal, the Supercup and the Club World Cup.

The nomination of five of its players for the Ballon d’Or in Lahm, Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer, Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben, with Ribery making the final shortlist, is testament to the success they have tasted. With a squad that shows no visible weakness, Bayern would definitely take some stopping in 2014 as well.
