On a day when Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich dropped their first points of the season, Stuttgart's uncertain start to their German title defence continued with a 1-0 defeat at promoted Karlsruhe.

Stuttgart had come from nowhere to take the title last year, winning their last eight games of the season and going top only in the penultimate week.

But Armin Veh's side have not maintained their form this season with only one win in four Bundesliga games.

Tamas Hajnal scored the only goal of the game for Karlsruhe to leave Stuttgart fourth-bottom of the table.

A late equaliser from hosts Hamburg denied Bayern a fourth straight win.

Miroslav Klose's opener gave the Bavarian giants the lead after 70 minutes but three minutes from time Mohamed Zidan levelled things up at 1-1. The Egyptian thus became the first man to score against Ottmar Hitzfeld's side this season although Bayern remain three points clear of five other clubs.

On Saturday Bochum, Arminia Bielefeld and Eintracht Frankfurt all suffered defeats and missed the chance to go top.

With Bayern not in action until Sunday, any of the trio could have leapfrogged them by winning.

But newly-promoted Duisburg defeated Bielefeld 3-0 courtesy of goals from Maicon and Manasseh Ishiaku (two), substitute Vahid Hashemian hit the winner as Hannover beat Bochum 3-2 and Boubacar Sanogo and Petri Pasanen goals gave Werder Bremen a 2-1 win over Eintracht.

Elsewhere an 88th-minute winner from Solomon Okoronkwo sealed all three points for Hertha Berlin in their 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg.

Giovanni Federico notched a late winner as Borussia Dortmund prevailed 1-0 against bottom side Hansa Rostock, while fellow strugglers Cottbus were held 1-1 by 10-man Nurnberg following Andreas Wolf's equaliser five minutes from time.

On Friday, Schalke continued their unbeaten start to the new Bundesliga campaign but could only manage a 1-1 draw with Bayer Leverkusen.

Kevin Kuranyi fired them into the lead on the stroke of half-time but they were pegged back early in the second half by Theofanis Gekas and despite Kuranyi's best efforts to grab a winner, were forced to settle for a draw.
