Maybe your internet is blocking FTP port. Are you accessing it from university or office?

For the FTP transfer mode, personally I don't really change it. You might want to have a look on this page (http://www.rhinosoft.com/newsletter/NewsL2008-03-18.asp) to know what is better for you.
