What to buy for a first timer?
HSP 94103

Pro - Spare parts widely available from most LHS ; Reasonably priced for RTR (~RM350 - tx/rx, battery) ; For on-road, they are reasonably durable ; Versatile platform, can convert from drift to touring to rally with some mods ; standard 1/10 size means wide range of upgrade parts (tires, bodyshell, shocks) available ; relatively easy to work on
Con - All round bushings, no ball bearings ; stock servo is crap ; bodyshell a bit thin ; steering knuckles may strip over time
Misc - Seal up the spur and pinion if you want to convert to rally ; dont upgrade to alu parts, as it'll make the car more brittle
Recommended Upgrades - Ball bearings, better servo, better ESC+Motor(if your stock ones burn out on you), LiPo batteries

Tamiya TT01E
user posted image
Pro - Well known brand ; a lot of hop ups available ; proven platform ; versatile all rounder ; very scaled looks (with painted+detailed bodyshell) ; very durable ; standard 1/10 size
Con - Kit (some may like, some may hate it, requires building) ; No servo, battery, tx/rx included ; A lot of upgrades necessary to get it competitive (metal center drive shaft, oil filled shocks, ball bearings, adjustable toe-ends) ; A lot of slop in the steering ; Limited adjustment in most models (can be fixed by upgrading) ; Limited gearing options ;
Misc - Prices start from RM490 for a kit, which requires assembly and painting ( paint ~RM20 a can, servo ~RM30, battery ~RM100, charger ~RM120, tx+rx ~RM100)
Recommended Upgrades - Ball bearings, CVA Shocks (oil filled shocks, either from 3Racing, Tamiya or Yeah Racing), Metal driveshaft, adjustable links for camber

3Racing Sakura Zero S
user posted image
Pro - Proven platform ; Race ready ; FRP platform ; a lot of hop ups ; can be used for drift or touring ; cheap (~RM300), Alot of adjustability
Con - Kit form ; No electronics included ; No bodyshell included ;
Misc - Choosing a cheap brushless set up (EZrun 9t/35A) would be good ; Pair with a cheap flysky 2.4ghz, lipo, bodyshell, and it can be a good racing platform
Recommended Upgrades - Since this is a kit, you'll be supplying your own electronics. Nothing much to upgrade

Clones (TRF416, Mi4, T2'009)
user posted image
Pro - Cheap RTR (~RM320) ; Cloned from proven racing platforms ; Spare parts widely available (from original manufacturer or clone spare parts); Can be used for touring of drift ; comes with ball bearings
Con - Horrible plastic quality, will strip after being screwed in a few times ; brittle aluminum ; some parts are pricey
Misc - Dont waste your time with these clones. Get a used TRF416/Mi4/T2 would be better, or even the Sakura Zero S.
Recommended Upgrades - If you have the money, replace broken parts with original ones

HPI E10
user posted image
Pro - Brand ; Decent drifter ; Decent priced (~RM650) ; Detailed bodyshell
Con - Propriety shocks means expensive replacements ; Diffs are not strong ; Little to no adjustments ; spare parts availability
Misc - HPI's answer to Tamiya's TT01E. Both are bottom end vehicles.
Recommended Upgrades - LiPo batteries, Ball bearings

TEH-R31
user posted image
Pro - Cloned from the StreeJam OTA-R31 ; Excellent platform for drifting ; Easy to upgrade to CS Drift ; Extreme steering angle ; Compatible with StreeJam parts
Con - Plastic quality is bad ; Clone is bad ; Cant be used for touring
Misc - Do check your LHS's prices for these, if expensive, its better you get a used OTA-R31 (original).
Recommended Upgrades - Upgrade to original parts from StreetJam for better quality

electric with 120a and 5.5T motor can smoke those nitro, if u know how to handle such massive power.
nitro cant take corner at fast speed. come corner they go turtle speed. ahahaha.

there are pro's and con's for both

EP (electric) will have power fade after few laps in touring due to battery power finishing.
nitro u take more time for engine tuning, EP u just plug the battery and ready to play.
nitro can't drift tongue.gif

if u want to play touring, spend some time in titiwangsa track. see for yourself first.

according to bobo they're shifting place.. dunno where yet.. looking for a cheaper alternative maybe.. so alternatively i must go to either MRC, DRace or RC Staion klang to play.. might as well visiting MOD and D3 as i never been there tongue.gif

BTW ericmaxman congrats on V2.. the original TS is MIA i think.. looking forward to u for maintaining this thread.. rclxms.gif the original V1 has been going on for 6 years to finish with drifter come and go..

If you say a few years back, probably.. But now, got brushless power... brows.gif

*
wow...that looks good O.O..im still pretty blur in this..wonder how much would a "fast enough basic" R/C cost for nitro and electric hmm.gif

QUOTE(ayiesz @ Apr 27 2012, 07:41 AM)
electric with 120a and 5.5T motor can smoke those nitro, if u know how to handle such massive power.
nitro cant take corner at fast speed. come corner they go turtle speed. ahahaha.

there are pro's and con's for both

EP (electric) will have power fade after few laps in touring due to battery power finishing.
nitro u take more time for engine tuning, EP u just plug the battery and ready to play.
nitro can't drift tongue.gif

if u want to play touring, spend some time in titiwangsa track. see for yourself first.
*
ooo..tuning huh..i will be having a hard time to tune as i know nothing yet rclxub.gif

i cant go titiwangsa as I'm back in my homecountry already sad.gif. Used to live at KL during my studies. Hard to find R/C around my area..except those cheap race-tin versions xD

Added on April 27, 2012, 12:08 pmAnyway, TS.

you can update the thread with..

"Where to buy them"
like the sites you provided to me.

and instead of LYN Drifters why don't call it LYN R/C user or something? tongue.gif

Not sure how is it on the streetjam la, but on my cars, if i overtighten the screws, it'll take more effort to spin the wheels using your hands.

in that theory, if you overtighten, you are working the motor harder to turn the wheels, right?

in that theory, if you overtighten, you are working the motor harder to turn the wheels, right?

change rims smile.gif
or try put a washer between wheel hub and c-hub?

like ayiesz posted, put washer between hex hub and C hub. if your hex hub are alum and secured with allen screw then should be no problem. if plastic, just dont 100% tighten it as the hub will flex thus touching the c hub and creating friction

wish you luck on your problem biggrin.gif

Hi everyone. I'm just planning to venture into this hobby and eyeing on Vantex brand RC (around rm350-400). I also noticed the 416 is quite popular. Is it a good model to start from?

I'm not planning to spend more than rm400 because I just want to get the feel of it first, and if I want to continue, I will just give this to my nephew and straight go for 'kit', not RTR.

its a tamiya TRF416 clone..hahaha

the tires would work well out of the box.. but, if you ever plan to drift indoors, especially with carpeted surface, do be prepared to buy carpet drift tires (RM60-RM70)..

Higher mAH rating lo.

About 4000mAH should suffice I guess. Brand wise, they're mostly the same.

if u r getting clone chassis, look for TEH-R31. don't go for T2 or 416. Mi4, T2 n 416 are not meant for drift originally, it was designed for Touring specifically. u will have headache if u opt for above choices..

however, TEH-R31/Ventex R31 are clone chassis of StreetJam OTA-R31 and it is designed for Drift specifically. this chassis proven one of the best chassis in market and lots of ppl using it in worldwide, setting wise u can easily get it via internet.
ofcourse, there are lots of good chassis around the globe brands like Kazama, RC-ART, Square and Yokomo but with your budget i think you can settle TEH-R31/Ventex R31 RTR.

word of advise, better start this hobby with right chassis and save you alot of trouble in future.

future advice: later if your front one way gone/rosak/kaput, just go for the original stuff (streetjam/3racing/fijon).
try to avoid the non-brand for mechanical stuff. save you in the long run. hurt your pocket at first lol

by default, front is solid axle, back is differential. buy front one way, then the solid axle at the front move to the rear.

fast charger, 45 minutes can fully charge the 1800nimh/nicd. 2 hours probably for 5000mah lipo.
default socket wall charger, 2-4 hours to charge the 1800nimh. dont really remember
get a fast charger. basic requirement. no point charging few hours just to play 10 minutes.
2nd hand B6 imax rm80-90 only. new one original almost rm200

Went to a nearby shop to get my car checked, turns out the receiver 'kong'. After replaced with a new one (RM60), then noticed the battery can only last about 3 min (even right after charging). Ended up buying a NIMh 5100mah battery with fast charger (RM300)...kopak already... but really satisfied with it.

GT2 and the GT3B is one of the most preferred tx overseas. The GT3B even has got custom firmware icon_idea.gif That being said, we should be seeing the new GT2B and GT3C by the end of this month. I may be getting a GT2B for some newer cars.

These FlySky Rx/Tx are a perfect example of cheap and cheerful. Even the range is pretty damn far.

The problem with my front wheel (didn't spin fast) is because a plastic part which hold the front diff broke, thus has to put o ring and a metal pin to hold it togetger. And also thanks to the advice (poison), just upgraded to ezrun 9t brushless combo (rm280). A lot more faster but somehow easier to control/drift. The bad news is, a platic part that spin the front left wheel broke just now. Seems like the extra power may be to much for the stock part to handle...

I've been wondering, since parts keep broken (maybe due to my rough play), maybe i'm better off with buggy/truck compared to drift....

Pinion+spur need to be MT specific.

But i would wholeheartedly recommend the HSP brontosaurus. But, bear in mind, you should keep it in BRUSHED form. If you want to convert to brushless, be prepared for breakages. Dogbones, hub carriers are my most common breakages. But i do trash my MT hard. Flipping and whacking into cars at full speed on road. If you want better handling, a truggy or buggy would be fine too, but watch out for tire wear if you are using a buggy. I did managed to record a top speed of 54kmh on a HSP buggy, also brushless converted. also, due to many accidents, you will want to stock up on dogbones and hub carriers.

Conclusion, the wear and tear is more or less the same... The good side is it can be played almost anywhere.

Its kinda frustrating that part kept broken, especially for newbie like me who just want to enjoy it without spending money to replaced part after each play....

It is expected, considering that the platform was not built for brushless power in mind, so durability is an issue.

New MT is only RM350 or so ma

Added on May 27, 2012, 5:50 pmChanged to OTA 1-way front (rm190)... playing great for the whole afternoon until the 'rear left axle' (I think, the part which spin the rear wheel) broke....damn. Need to change to alloy also...the brushless is really too hard to handle for plastic parts.

check your driving style. my fren use to be like this, always got broken parts. dont go bashing too hard. slow and steady

be prepared to spend around rm2k until you get to the stable point. then there's only minor part need to be changed. be brave my fren. ahahaha

Yeah, my driving style is quite rough (the brushless punch is really addictive) but is actually can be expected, more power, less durability (plastic maaa). The shop towkey already source me a 2nd hand axle (from other customer), later he will confirm the price. If want to order new, might be more expensive and take time. Can't wait, hand itchy already... sweat.gif

So total cost so far:

RTR car set (RM370)
Rx (RM58)
Charger (RM180)
5100mah battery (RM160)
EZrun Brushless (RM300)
Front 1way (RM200)
TOTAL=1258 sweat.gif

But the experience thumbup.gif

Actually, I can actually use this as part of my student project. Maybe design ESC with traction control sort of thing, which imo can be cheaper. Maybe can be tune with laptop like real car.... hmm.gif

Well, for newbie like me is a good thing to have. Maybe can control the power curve, mapping between remote to throttle...

Added on May 28, 2012, 2:12 pmI target the price less than 100 with wireless setting function (can change the throttle sensitivity)... What else?

Buying is not the same of developing. I want to try to develop it myself, just for fun. Can impress people if got telemetry function like F1 brows.gif

it's the remote/receiver that control most of that things.

as for ESC, try to do temp. cutoff, safe cutoff(useful when remote suddenly lost connection), throttle burst (turbo).
what's most important is the sensitivity adjustment, and also precision.

I'm wondering what is the smallest area required to build a 'home' drift track because I have an empty 10x10 attics room (my house got really high ceiling so I renovate a bit to make another floor). Maybe put in some carpet (where to get?) because the floor is plywood and at least can use it for practice.

for me, anything with moving parts, i'll go for original manufacturer.
if it's just alloy part, eagle racing is good enough.

try to look for r31 kit body only without electronics, cost about 160
then buy brushless combo (9t ezrun with 35a esc) around 300+
get a lipo battery (120)
fast charger (120)
pick your bodyshell (60-200)
remote (200-600)

dont buy 416 its more for touring

better than buying a RTR for upgrade later.

I'm also new (bought ota r31 clone, rm350 rtr lst 2 week) and as advised by ayiez, better get better electronics since the standard one us crap. 1st day receiver burn, the next day esc burn. Buying higher capacity battery with fast charger is really recommend. However imo, better skip the brushless for now since its will caused other mechanical part to fail because the high torque (in my case front diff/axle and rear axle). But that maybe cause by my unskilled/rough style.

the stock UJ/differential is bound to fail. the clone quality is quite rubbish for mechanical parts. lol

it says can give camber adjustment on the fly, as and when your damper changes.
so you will always have traction exiting corner. not sure if it's practical in RC anyway. wait till there's a user review. haha

front UJ is 48mm, rear can use 51mm

if you're free at night tonite, go to MRC puchong, ask for fijon UJ. as good if not better than eagle racing. look for Wong there... not sure if have stock, but worth a shot.

eh wait you're not in klang valley rite? doh.gif
then take the eagle racing.
my advice, get a rim with at least 5mm offset. better if can get 9mm offset. pair with 200mm body. clone kit have tendency to rattle a lot on the front wheel, UJ easier to broke. just from my experience. without offset the rim very close to your c-hub when turning and sometimes it brush each other

if rear then can take 51mm. front i'm afraid it will be too tight, that is if it can fit it.
try to find fijon

Here not much choice..actually. don't know whether got stock or not. Furthermore, R31 is new thus most people use 416 which cause shop didn't keep parts for R31. doh.gif

Added on June 16, 2012, 1:44 pmJust done some checking, the 'drive pulley' (i think whats it called) teeth kinda worn out. Should be replaced with this right (the same 18T). Want to order as spares since i read on the net the standard one will definitely breaks after some time.

For the pulley question it is good to replace it with aluminum pulley as the plastic one not quite sturdy.. A few of my friends already change to aluminum pulley due to breakage during play.. As for the universal joint for r31 i dont know the size.. I only know that their UJ is longer.. Up to 55mm also got..

I just ordered the 'driving pulley change ratio', got 8 different size pulley. Just want to play around with the ratio before deciding which size to buy for the aluminium type.

The uj standard is 48mm. But I ordered the eagle racing (48.5mm) which is better for cs (read from the web).

My caster got problem. Screw are loose and cannot be tighten (clone product, low qyality). Since got another pair (4 deg, the one on the car is 7deg), I changed them. Somehow my car harder to do small donut. Does it means more deg caster is better?

in theory, more caster degree = faster response. it somehow factor against your chamber setting in terms of the surface contact.

read about caster degree effect. dunno how to explain here sweat.gif

hi my R31 somehow very noisy, before this i'm using 48P spur and pinion, they said it is normal for 48P to be noisy, now i've change to 64P, but i think it is almost the same noise... i suspected that the spur holder (which is plastic) has bent a bit and make the spur whirling.... so do i need to change to this???

i bought two batt for rm230.. usually lower C rate batt is generally cheaper.. mine is 50C so a 35C rate batt should be cheaper.. but that depend on the batt capacity as well.. i bought a 5700mAh.. my friend want a 6000mAh so more or less the price not that big differ than mine..

Its RM215 for both batteries bro. Price is subject to change due to currency exchange rate and items in shopping cart. laugh.gif But that's for your reference lah.

How urgent you need the batteries? I got some items on backorder sweat.gif

Also, I thought you mentioned you wanted some power adapters? brows.gif

Depends on controller needs. IE, the FlySky GT3B needs ~12v, so a 3S LiPo would cost from RM50 onwrds. (for TX)

Can't wait, since using lighter battery does makes drifting easier. (i tried using a 1800mah instead of the usual 5200mah nimh).

Is it normal to find that its easier to drift in on direction, let say clockwise compared to counter-clockwise? I've swap the setting and its still the same.

Afaik, both got pros and cons. But the main pros for belt imo is the ease to mod the ratio.

I got clone ota-r31 which is designed for drift.

I'm noob also...this is my 1st car. So cannot compared between axle and belt. Just some info from the net said that axle is more durable but belt easier to mod and less torque steer (car going left/right when full throttle from standstill). But IMO, its depend on the driver, some prefer axle, some belt.

Mod the ratio is by changing the pulley to different sizes to achieve different power distribution (normal is 50-50) so that the rear get more power than front, which is harder to control but makes it more fun and realistic.

Depends on what u mean by won la icon_idea.gif

nitro needs more tuning..hehe..but can chase la.. my buggy 2wd, the nitro all 4wd..i working harder to chase, since the surface very lose..cannot power on while taking corners..hehe.. but at straights, can keep up with the nitros... biggrin.gif

my brushless is ~12t, with a 35a ESC.

Its hard to imitate real car. Although the size is scaled down, the weight is not.

Just like suggested by eric, OTA R31 (because I got one, albeit its a clone).

Get the clone for around rm350 to see whether drifting is for you. But don't use high capacity battery (long play time will burn the esc) and change to brushless (all parts will start breaking one by one).

Torque, get something with about 10kg.

Speed, should ideally be LESS than 0.15s

Eric, is GT3C good? I like because it comes with lipo. Mine (gt2) lipo is quite expensive.

From my observations, 1/8 Rally is slowly catching up. There are getting more and more 1/8 rally cars.. brows.gif

I love my GT3C. It feels expensive.Features also nice thumbup.gif

car setup depends on driver's skill.... for you.. start of with 4wd .. then if u can drift nicely... can try CS(counter steer) 1.2 1.4 and above...
for a start.. get everything stock 1st... get into the groove.. then tune ur car according to ur taste laugh.gif
